Roman brick can refer either to a type of brick originating in Ancient Rome and spread by the Romans to the lands they conquered; or to a modern type inspired by the ancient prototypes. In both cases, it characteristically has longer and flatter dimensions than those of standard modern bricks.
The Romans made fired clay bricks, and the Roman legions, which operated mobile kilns, introduced bricks to many parts of the empire. Roman bricks are often stamped with the mark of the legion that supervised their production. The use of bricks in southern and western Germany, for example, can be traced back to traditions already described by the Roman architect Vitruvius.
Roman brick was almost invariably of a lesser height than modern brick, but was made in a variety of different shapes and sizes. Shapes included square, rectangular, triangular and round, and the largest bricks found have measured over three feet in length. Ancient Roman bricks had a general size of 1½ Roman feet by 1 Roman foot, but common variations up to 15 inches existed. Other brick sizes in Ancient Rome included 24" x 12" x 4", and 15" x 8" x 10". Ancient Roman bricks found in France measured 8" x 8" x 3". The Constantine Basilica in Trier is constructed from Roman bricks 15" square by 1½" thick. There is often little obvious difference (particularly when only fragments survive) between Roman bricks used for walls on the one hand, and tiles used for roofing or flooring on the other, and so archaeologists sometimes prefer to employ the generic term Ceramic Building Material (or CBM).
Taylor Alison Swift (born December 13, 1989) is an American singer-songwriter. Raised in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, she moved to Nashville, Tennessee, at the age of 14 to pursue a career in country music. She signed with the independent label Big Machine Records and became the youngest songwriter ever signed by the Sony/ATV Music publishing house. The release of Swift's eponymous debut album in 2006 marked the start of her career as a country music singer. Her third single, "Our Song", made her the youngest person to single-handedly write and perform a number-one song on the Hot Country Songs chart.
Swift's second album, Fearless, was released in 2008. Buoyed by the pop crossover success of the singles "Love Story" and "You Belong with Me", Fearless became the best-selling album of 2009 in the United States. The album won four Grammy Awards, making Swift the youngest ever Album of the Year winner. Swift's third and fourth albums, 2010's Speak Now and 2012's Red, both sold more than one million copies within the first week of their U.S release. Speak Now's "Mean" won two Grammy Awards, while Red's singles "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" and "I Knew You Were Trouble" were successful worldwide. Swift's fifth album, the pop-focused 1989, was released in 2014 and sold more copies in its opening week than any album in the previous 12 years, making Swift the first and only act to have three albums sell more than one million copies in the opening release week. Its singles "Shake It Off", "Blank Space", and "Bad Blood" reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The album would go on to win three awards at the 2016 Grammys including Album of the Year making Swift the first and thus far only female artist to receive the award twice.

A 2,000-year-old brick has a fascinating history. It's hard to believe a simple brick could have such a complex history. A master's student named Kristin Converse had been exploring a place in Washington state known as the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site. She noticed a different colored brick in an unusual group that did not appear to be of local origin.Footprints of a cat could be seen in one corner of the piece. This group of bricks had already been researched in the early 1980's by an archeologist who believed they had Roman roots and were shipped to the United States from England. Approximately 2000 years ago, a part of Britain was under Roman control and was known as Britannia. Converse tested the bricks further and found their chemical composition indicated them to be R...
Roman Architecture (HSAR 252) Professor Kleiner discusses the transformation of Rome by its first emperor, Augustus, who claimed to have found Rome a city of brick and left it a city of marble. The conversion was made possible by the exploitation of new marble quarries at Luna (modern Carrara) on the northwest coast of Italy. The lecture surveys the end of the Roman Republic and the inauguration of the Principate and analyzes the Forum of Julius Caesar and the Forum of Augustus. Professor Kleiner shines a spotlight on Caesar's attempt to link himself to his divine ancestress Venus Genetrix and on Augustus' appropriations of Greek caryatids and other decorative motifs that associate his era with the Golden Age of Periclean Athens. Finally, she analyzes the Ara Pacis Augustae, a monument ...

The model made with Lego bricks in this video is a model of a Roman water wheel used to lift water to an aqueduct. The Romans built some 600 aqueducts throughout the Roman world. Most of the aqueducts had spring water sources. Where spring water was not available but clean streams were present and where the city was uphill from the source, the Romans were known to construct large diameter water wheels to lift the water to tanks or aqueducts for distribution.

This is a model of a working Roman watermill made with Lego bricks. Running water turns a water wheel. The vertically rotating water wheel is attached to a horizontal shaft that extends into the mill and which vertically rotates a wheel with studs. The vertically rotating studs cause a cage gear to horizontally rotate. Attached to the cage gear is a vertical shaft which rotates making the upper grinding stone turn. The mill is modeled after the mill at Barbegal in France that ground grain for some 12,000 people.
Our modern municipal water systems owe much to the inventiveness of ancient Rome. To provide water to crowded cities throughout the Roman world in Europe, Asia and Northern Africa, the Romans built some 600 aqueducts over an 800 year period. Water flowed by gravity alone over tens of miles from springs and other mountainous sources, beneath the earth in vaults, through tunnels in mountains and across valleys in channels atop arcades of arches. The aqueducts of ancient Rome supplied clean, fresh water to public fountains, baths, and sporting events, and even to private homes. The Romans placed much pride in their aqueducts as marvels of their superior civilization. They recognized the importance of abundant potable water to maintain their health and prosperity. Eleven aqueducts supplied...

Listen to this lively discussion between Kate Tempest – one of the most exciting new voices emerging from Britain today – and host Maxine Beneba Clarke. Musician, rapper, playwright, performance poet, novelist; it’s hard to know which title comes first when referring to Tempest. In 2013, Tempest won the prestigious Ted Hughes Award for her epic poem, Brand New Ancient. In 2014, her debut album Everybody Down was nominated for the Mercury Prize. Her debut novel is The Bricks that Built the Houses. Each chapter of the book relates to a track from Everybody Down, and takes us into the homes of ordinary Londoners, revealing their motivations, failures and hopes. Tempest’s subject – rich with history, community and character – is South London, the place she grew up.
Kiddies, kiddies. Halt for a sec. This vid is me TRYING to act cool, TRYING to act like I've been in the pen. This is a demonstration of my four-step process to construct concrete columns/pillars, cover them with a natural stone veneer and then top them with poured concrete caps. This video is VERY long - one hour and 40+ minutes! I work slow, and I talk slow. Hopefully, you have lots of patience. If not, this video (and stone work in general) is probably not for you. I'm not very good with a camera, so things jump around a bit. I used Adobe Premiere Elements 4.0 to make the video. My wimpy computer can't really handle the processor-intensive rendering necessary for large video files, and the result is that the audio lags behind the video by a couple of seconds - kind of like watching those original Godzilla movies. Hey, I'm just keeping it real. Four years ago I had an idea to build 4 st...

Arch, in architecture and civil engineering, a curved member that is used to span an opening and to support loads from above. The arch formed the basis for the evolution of the vault. Arch construction depends essentially on the wedge. If a series of wedge-shaped blocks—i.e., ones in which the upper edge is wider than the lower edge—are set flank to flank in the manner shown in the figure, the result is an arch. These blocks are called voussoirs. Each voussoir must be precisely cut so that it presses firmly against the surface of neighbouring blocks and conducts loads uniformly. The central voussoir is called the keystone. The point from which the arch rises from its vertical supports is known as the spring, or springing line. During construction of an arch, the voussoirs require support ...
