Live It Up – Twice

Hopeton Lewis’s Live It Up has been pretty much the stuff of legends for many years. A next piece on the rhythm of John Holt’s classic Ali Baba that was arguably even better than the original, first issued on a blank only and in tiny quantities. So rare was this that even many seasoned reggae people didn’t know the tune or had only heard it on a handful of occasions over the years.

Merritone Masterpieces

The third selection of Merritone 7″ reissues from Dubstore have just been announced and once again there are some real gems here. There is nothing previously unreleased in this bunch but with hard to find classics like Joe Higgs – You Hurt My Soul and Don Henry – As Long As I Live included no one will be complaining.

Gaylettes – Silent River Runs Deep / I Like Your World Don Henry – As Long … continue reading…

What is Mod Reggae?

Trojan records have announced that four double CD compilations will be released at the end of the month. These appear to be a bit of a departure from other recent releases as they seem to cater to some extent to the collectors market with a higher proportion of obscure tunes. The four releases are Dub, Ska, Mod Reggae and a hits/rareities package called Heavy Heavy Monster Sound: The Story Of Trojan Records.

To celebrate the return of Tighten Up this Saturday I thought I’d put up one of the most popular mixes I previously featured on the podomatic site. Enjoy.
