What the hell is going on at Guantanamo Bay? We went to find out and at first glance were shocked by what we found in the first hour of being there – bowling alleys, skate parks and McDonalds. Also gift shops and beach volleyball.

Almost 800 men have been held at the Guantanamo Bay detention facility since it was established in 2002. Today, fewer than 150 remain. Despite the fact that more than half of current detainees have been cleared for transfer from the base, and in spite of the executive order signed by President Barack Obama in 2009 ordering the closure of the prison within one year, there's no indication it will be shuttered anytime soon.
VICE News traveled to Guantanamo to find out what the hell is going on. After a tightly controlled yet bizarre tour of the facility, we sought out a former detainee in Sarajevo and a former guard in Phoenix to get their unfiltered impressions of what life is like at Gitmo.

The Guantanamo Bay detention center in Cuba didn’t just take its toll on inmates. Their guards suffered as well.
U.S. military personnel assigned to the Guantanamo Bay detention center suffer from high rates of post-traumatic stress disorder, according to exclusive interviews and documents obtained by VICE News.
"I had nightmares where they would somehow get ahold of me and grab my hair and slam my face off a steel door," U.S. Navy veteran Nichole York told VICE News correspondent Jason Leopold.
York and fellow U.S. Navy veteran Andrew Turner describe being left in the dark about their mission prior to deployment, working 12-hour days, living in fear and isolation, and finally being diagnosed with PTSD.
Turner said he came forward in part so other service members assigned to Guantanamo would know they aren't alone. "I don't want them to be afraid."
Six years after leaving Guantanamo Bay, York says she's still afraid of the detainees she was assigned to care for. "My fear is them finding me."

As Ramadan begins, more than 100 hunger-strikers in Guantánamo Bay continue their protest. More than 40 of them are being force-fed. A leaked document sets out the military instructions, or standard operating procedure, for force-feeding detainees. In this four-minute film made by Human Rights organisation Reprieve and Bafta award-winning director Asif Kapadia, US actor and rapper Yasiin Bey (formerly known as Mos Def), experiences the procedure.

Face à lui, un interrogateur implacable, Gail Holford, lui-même soumis à des pressions hiérarchiques, qui par de doucereuses manipulations et de fausses promesses tente d’extorquer à Murat des aveux quant à ses supposées "activités terroristes".

Guantánamo
Guantánamo is a municipality and city in southeast Cuba and capital of Guantánamo Province.
Guantánamo is served by the Caimanera port near the site of a U.S. naval base. The area produces sugarcane and cotton wool. These are traditional parts of the economy.
History
The city was founded in 1797 in the area of a farm named Santa Catalina. The toponym "Guantánamo" means, in Taíno language, "land between the rivers".
Geography
Overview
The municipality is mountainous in the north, at Humboldt National Park, where it overlays the Sierra Maestra (mountains), and borders the Windward Passage of the Caribbean Sea in the south. It is crossed by the Bano, Guantánamo, Yateras, Guaso, San Andrés and Sabanalamar rivers. The city is spread with a square plan and is crossed in the middle by the Carretera Central highway. Guantánamo Bay is a natural harbour south of it.
The municipality borders with El Salvador, Niceto Pérez, Caimanera, Yateras, Manuel Tames and Sagua de Tánamo; this one in Holguín Province. It counts the villages of Argeo Martínez, Arroyo Hondo, Glorieta, Las Lajas and Paraguay.

Mos Def
Yasiin Bey (/jæˈsiːn ˈbeɪ/; born Dante Terrell Smith Bey; December 11, 1973), better known by his former stage name Mos Def (/ˈmoʊs ˈdɛf/), is an American hip hop recording artist, actor, comedian, and activist from Brooklyn, New York City, New York. Best known for his music, Bey embarked on his hip hop career in 1994, alongside his siblings in the short-lived rap group Urban Thermo Dynamics (UTD), after which he appeared on albums by Da Bush Babees and De La Soul. He subsequently formed the trio Black Star, alongside fellow Brooklyn-based rapper Talib Kweli, and Cincinnati producer Hi-Tek and released their eponymous debut album in 1998. He was a major force in late-1990s underground hip hop while under Rawkus Records. In 1999, Bey released his solo debut, Black on Both Sides, under Rawkus and Priority Records. His debut was followed by The New Danger (2004), True Magic (2006) and The Ecstatic (2009).
Prior to his career in music, Bey first entered public life as a child actor, having played roles in television movies, sitcoms, and theater, some of which were under the name Dante Beze. At the age of 14, he appeared in the TV movie God Bless the Child, which aired on ABC in 1988. He played the oldest child in the 1990 family sitcom You Take the Kids, shortly before it was cancelled. In 1995, he played the character "Dante" in The Cosby Mysteries. Since the early 2000s, Bey has been well known for his roles in films such as Something the Lord Made, Next Day Air, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, 16 Blocks, Be Kind Rewind, The Italian Job, Bamboozled and Brown Sugar, as well as for his portrayal of Brother Sam in the Showtime drama series Dexter. He is also known as the host of Def Poetry Jam, which aired on HBO between 2002 and 2007.

U.S. military personnel assigned to the Guantanamo Bay detention center suffer from high rates of post-traumatic stress disorder, according to exclusive interviews and documents obtained by VICE News.
"I had nightmares where they would somehow get ahold of me and grab my hair and slam my face off a steel door," U.S. Navy veteran Nichole York told VICE News correspondent Jason Leopold.
York and fellow U.S. Navy veteran Andrew Turner describe being left in the dark about their mission prior to deployment, working 12-hour days, living in fear and isolation, and finally being diagnosed with PTSD.
Turner said he came forward in part so other service members assigned to Guantanamo would know they aren't alone. "I don't want them to be afraid."
Six years after leaving Guantanamo Bay, York says she's still afraid of the detainees she was assigned to care for. "My fear is them finding me."

Winner of the Silver Bear at the 2006 Berlin Film Festival, The Road to Guantanamo, directed by Michael Winterbottom and Mat Whitecross, uses interviews, news footage, and reenactments to tell the story of the Tipton Three, young British men of Pakistani descent who were detained for over two years without charges at Guantanamo Bay by the American military. At this point, Monir is separated from the group, and they never see him again. Shafiq, Ruhel, and Asif are brought to Sheberghan prison, where they are detained under miserable conditions, until the Americans discover that they are British. At that point, their journey to Guantanamo begins. Asif Iqbal, Ruhel Ahmed, and Shafiq Rasul describe their ordeal at the hands of American and British intelligence, who were determined to get them to confess their nonexistent links to Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda, while the brutal scenes are reenacted onscreen. What happens after detainees are released from the Guantanamo Bay detention facility? The answer to that question has, for the most part, been shrouded in secrecy. When five former Guantanamo detainees were resettled to Kazakhstan in late December 2014, a senior official in the Obama administration was quoted as saying the ex-captives were now "free men". When five former Guantanamo detainees were resettled to Kazakhstan in late December 2014, a senior official in the Obama administration was quoted as saying the ex-captives were now "free men". But what does that actually mean? VICE News traveled to Kazakhstan to find out.
Abdul Mohammed Rahman, also known as Lotfi Bin Ali, came into US custody in February 2003, accused of having ties to the Tunisian Combat Group and al Qaeda — allegations that Bin Ali has vehemently denied. Still, he was designated as an “enemy combatant” by the US military and was shipped off to Guantanamo, where he was held for 12 years without charge or trial.
In Department of Defense documents released by Wikileaks, Bin Ali was deemed to be of “medium intelligence” value. However, the 2004 intelligence assessment also contained a noteworthy finding, namely that Bin Ali suffered from heart problems, needed serious medical attention and, as a result, was “low risk." The military recommended that he be repatriated or transferred to the control of another country. Despite the recommendation, Bin Ali was detained at Guantanamo for 10 more years.
Lotfi is still sick, and appears to be getting sicker. His new home in eastern Kazakhstan poses considerable challenges to successful reintegration into society. "Life After Guantanamo" paints a portrait of the challenges of integration and the mysterious circumstances surrounding former detainees' basic rights and freedoms after being released from Guantanamo.
