Cession

The act of cession is the assignment of property to another entity. In international law it commonly refers to land transferred by treaty. Ballentine's Law Dictionary defines cession as "a surrender; a giving up; a relinquishment of jurisdiction by a board in favor of another agency" In contrast with annexation, where property is forcibly given up, cession is voluntary or at least apparently so.

Examples

In 1790, the U.S. states of Maryland and Virginia both ceded land to create the District of Columbia, as specified in the U.S. Constitution of the previous year. The Virginia portion was given back in 1847, a process known as "retrocession".

Following the First Opium War (1839–1842) and Second Opium War (1856–1860), Hong Kong (Treaty of Nanking) and Kowloon (Convention of Peking) were ceded by the Qing dynasty government of China to the United Kingdom; and following defeat in the First Sino-Japanese War, Taiwan was ceded to the Empire of Japan in 1895.

Territory can also be ceded for payment, such as in the Louisiana Purchase and Alaska Purchase.

Luv U

Luv U (lit. Love You) was a Filipino teen comedy series which was aired every Sunday afternoons after Kapamilya Mega Blockbusters and before TV Patrol Weekend on ABS-CBN.

Overview

Lessons in love through the eyes of six teen students of Lambertu Uy Villarama University or LUV U as they experience the highs and lows of being in love at a very young age.

In the first season, the show featured former Goin' Bulilit kids Miles Ocampo, Kiray Celis, CJ Navato and Igi Boy Flores, with singing sensation Rhap Salazar and Angeli Gonzales, and newbie teen actor Marco Gumabao.

In the second season, the show will feature another batch of former Goin' Bulilit kids as newbies in the fictional university. Some former cast members from the previous season will make a return namely Smokey Manaloto, Bentong and many more. Newly added casts are also added like Eda Nolan and Alora Sasam.

The new season has a more-serious tone, it focuses not only on love but also the struggles and dilemmas of modern-day Filipino teenagers face such as bullying, friendship fall-outs, first break-up, studying difficulties, family acceptance and other real-life high school issues.

To France

"To France" is a single by musician Mike Oldfield, released in 1984. It is from the album Discovery and features Maggie Reilly on vocals.

The musical theme used in "To France" was also used on the first track on side two of the Discovery album, "Talk About Your Life". It references Mary, Queen of Scots, in its chorus. The B-sides for the single are the non-album tracks "In the Pool" and "Bones". The B-sides later reappeared on the reissue of the "Moonlight Shadow" single in 1993.

The music video that appears on the Elements – The Best of Mike Oldfield video for "To France" is a mock-live performance of the song. Oldfield plays a Fender Stratocaster in the video.

Maggie Reilly version

In 1996, Maggie Reilly re-recorded "To France" on her solo album Elena, and in 2009 she recorded another version of the song for her album Looking Back Moving Forward. Compared to the original, this version is significantly Pop-heavy. Maggie Reilly released their version under her initials M. R.

A Man

A Man (1979) (Italian: Un Uomo) (Greek: Ένας Άνδρας, transliteration: Enas Andras) is a novel written by Oriana Fallaci chronicling her relationship with the attempted assassin of Greek dictator George Papadopoulos.

Plot summary

The book is a pseudo-biography about Alexandros Panagoulis written in the form of a novel. Fallaci had an intense romantic relationship with Panagoulis. She uses the novel to put forth her view that Panagoulis was assassinated by a vast conspiracy, a view widely shared by many Greeks.

The work has had mixed reviews. Some will find the harsh polemic repetitive and disturbing. Fallaci is said to have been angry at Ms Magazine for not reviewing the work and this enhanced her reputation as an anti-feminist.
