Sudan (Arabic: السودان as-Sūdān, English pronunciation (US) i/suˈdæn/, (GB) /suːˈdɑːn/), officially the Republic of the Sudan (Arabic: جمهورية السودان Jumhūrīyat as-Sūdān), is a country in north-east Africa. It is bordered by Egypt to the north, the Red Sea, Eritrea, and Ethiopia, to the east, South Sudan to the south, the Central African Republic to the southwest, Chad to the west and Libya to the northwest. It is the third largest country in Africa. The River Nile divides the country into eastern and western halves. Its predominant religion is Islam.
Sudan was home to numerous ancient civilizations, such as the Kingdom of Kush, Kerma, Nobatia, Alodia, Makuria, Meroë and others, most of which flourished along the Nile. During the pre-dynastic period Nubia and Nagadan Upper Egypt were identical, simultaneously evolved systems of pharaonic kingship by 3300 BC. By virtue of its proximity to Egypt, the Sudan participated in the wider history of the Near East inasmuch as it was Christianized by the 6th century, and Islamized in the 15th. As a result of Christianization, the Old Nubian language stands as the oldest recorded Nilo-Saharan language (earliest records dating to the 9th century). Sudan was the largest country in Africa and the Arab world until 2011, when South Sudan separated into an independent country, following an independence referendum. Sudan is now the third largest country in Africa (after Algeria and the Democratic Republic of the Congo) and also the third largest country in the Arab world (after Algeria and Saudi Arabia).

South Sudan has what many business people describe as a "war economy"; people there are struggling to keep their companies afloat as a result of the brutal conflict which broke out between government and rebel forces in December 2013. Even if the recent peace deal holds, it will take some time for the economy to recover. Despite the challenges of civil war there are entrepreneurs and businesses with big hopes. But they have to deal with the lack of dollars in the country, and that has been driving up prices every day. Catherine Byaruhanga reports from Juba.

Musical performance by a Sudanese group at Delhi Haat, New Delhi... Sudan has a rich and unique musical culture that has been through chronic instability and repression during the modern history of Sudan. Beginning with the imposition of strict sharia law in 1989, many of the country's most prominent musicians and poets, like poets Mahjoub Sharif, were imprisoned while others, like Mohammed el Amin and Mohammed Wardi (Mohammed el amin returned to Sudan in 1991 and Mohammed Wardi returned to Sudan in 2003), fled to Cairo. Traditional music suffered too, with traditional Zār ceremonies being interrupted and drums confiscated. At the same time, however, the European militaries contributed to the development of Sudanese music by introducing new instruments and styles; military bands, especial...

Looking through some tapes, I came across this Dateline NBC show on an inestigation on the Sudanese "chemical factory" bombings by former US President Bill Clinton. I watched it today and the clues to the BS of the war on terror are here. YOU must watch and pay attention and then ask yourself a lot of questions. Also take note that they wondered if the US would have to be concerned about terrorism. You know what happen a few years later! How the media is able to predict things with the accuracy of a prophet is beyond me. Also take note of the Pakistan connection. I am sure that with ALL of the terror issues, Pakistan ALWAYS comes up, but yet there is no war with them. That is curious. The US goes to war with countries who are not involved, but leave thoese who ARE involved alone...

Enormous caravan trains once traversed the Sahara Desert that extends for nine million square kilometres and is the largest desert in the world. Just a few kilometres beyond Sudan’s metropolis of Khartoum in Omdurman is the splendid burial place of the famous 19th century Islamic leader, Al Mahdi, one of the most important exponents of Sufism. It was also Al Mahdi who invaded Khartoum, a city founded by the Egyptians that was later ruled by the British. In the 19th century the infamous warriors of the Hadendoa people were also the courageous soldiers of Al-Mahdi´s army. Today they live in the environs of the Red Sea Mountains where the camel is the only means of transport. Those travelling across the Sahara have always had to cope with the savage climate of the desert and in ancient time...

Read the entire issue devoted to South Sudan: http://www.vice.com/read/saving-south-sudan Late last year, South Sudan's president, Salva Kiir, accused his former vice president, Riek Machar, of attempting a coup d'état amid accusations of rampant corruption within the government. Infighting immediately broke out within the presidential guard, sparking what has now become a brutal tribal and civil war that has pitted Machar's ethnic Nuer loyalists against the majority Dinka, who have sided with Kiir. Machar narrowly escaped assassination, fleeing to the deep bush as Kiir's troops razed his home and killed his bodyguards. And now the world's newest sovereign nation is in imminent danger of becoming a failed state. In February, journalists and filmmakers Robert Young Pelton and Tim Freccia ...

The SPLA quickly fractured into two camps: an insurgency drawn from members of former vice president Riek Machar's Nuer tribe and troops who remained loyal to President Salva Kiir, of the Dinka tribe. Both sides have been accused of committing gross human rights abuses during the conflict. The Longest War: Sudan's civil war raged for over two decades. This film gives incredible insight into its bloody and violent history.
