Dmitri Aleksandrovich Hvorostovsky sings Rossini's "The Barber of Seville"
Barbiere's first performance on 20 February 1816 was a disastrous failure: the audience hissed and jeered throughout, and several on-stage accidents occurred. However, many of the audience were supporters of one of Rossini's rivals, Giovanni Paisiello, who played on "mob mentality" to provoke the rest of the audience to dislike the opera. Paisiello had already composed The Barber of Seville and took Rossini's new version to be an affront to his version. In particular, Paisiello and his followers were opposed to the use of basso buffo, which is common in comic opera.[5] The second performance met with quite a different fate, becoming a roaring success. It is curious to note that the original French play of Le Barbier de Séville endured a similar story, hated at first only to become a favorite within a week.

Barbiere's first performance on 20 February 1816 was a disastrous failure: the audience hissed and jeered throughout, and several on-stage accidents occurred. However, many of the audience were supporters of one of Rossini's rivals, Giovanni Paisiello, who played on "mob mentality" to provoke the rest of the audience to dislike the opera. Paisiello had already composed The Barber of Seville and took Rossini's new version to be an affront to his version. In particular, Paisiello and his followers were opposed to the use of basso buffo, which is common in comic opera.[5] The second performance met with quite a different fate, becoming a roaring success. It is curious to note that the original French play of Le Barbier de Séville endured a similar story, hated at first only to become a favorite within a week.

Le premier titre de Beaumarchais était "La Folle Journée": l'action commence dans la matinée, rebondit d'heure en heure et se termine tard dans la nuit. Le premier titre de Beaumarchais était "La Folle Journée": l'action commence dans la matinée, rebondit d'heure en heure et se termine tard dans la nuit. Chacun des personnages court éperdument après son bonheur. Figaro veut épouser Suzanne, le Comte voudrait en faire sa maîtresse. Chérubin courtise toutes les filles et femmes du château, il aime par dessous tout la Comtesse qui est sa marraine. Bazile a des vues sur Marceline qui, elle, veut épouser Figaro.
La pièce compte cinq actes et finit en apothéose sous les grands marronniers, dans le parc du château, où à la faveur de la nuit, chacun trouvera son compte et son bonheur mais pas forcément comme il l'avait d'abord imaginé.

0:13:46 - “Se vuol ballare, signor contino, il chitarrino le suonerò”: It’s difficult to render into English the pun of the initial verses of this Cavatina: in Italian, the verb “suonare” (to play) can mean also “to beat somebody” (for example in the idiomatic expression “suonarle a qualcuno” , something like “to give someone a beating”). Besides, the word “chitarrino” (literally “little guitar”), it’s one of the ancient popular ways to say (and not to say)... the rear end. It follows that Figaro would gladly make the Count dance (or even caper) kicking his arse! At least a symbolic revenge of that “sacrilegious kick” Mozart had received up his backside from Count Arco, chief steward of the Archbishop of Salzburg, five years before, when he asked to took leave of his angry employer.
