About:
Unbeknown to those most outside the magic community, the seemingly insignificant white borders on the back of playing cards have always been considered sacred to the magician. Borders aid in the concealment sleight of hand, especially for close-up magic, and till today are regarded as a necessary feature by most card magicians.
Yet, while Cardistry was first birthed centuries ago from magicians who desired to add some flourishes to their card handling, it in itself contains no magic at all. In fact, while card magic involves the concealment of movement, Cardistry is the very opposite - revolving around the expression and aesthetics of movement and form. In other words, borders often end up obscuring what the Cardist wishes to showcase.
Unfortunately, Cardistry was always regarded as a niche within the niche of magic, and Cardists had to make do with whatever decks they could get in their hands - that is, until Virtuoso came along.
In 2012, the Virtuoso deck made history as the first deck designed for Cardistry. Derived from Cardistry’s core movements and forms, the first Virtuoso deck featured a functional back design - Adaptive Aesthetics - that adapted to visually accentuate every card flourish a Cardist performed.
While it quickly proceeded to become the choice of top cardists around the globe, a single element always dampened its full visual potential - its inclusion of borders. So for the latest Virtuoso deck, we decided to go beyond the existing borders of Cardistry, by literally removing them.
The result is an edge-to-edge back design that not only magnifies each shape for maximum visibility, but also liberates the cards to seamlessly merge with one another to establish new forms. It’s what we consider our boldest and most breathtaking deck of cards to date, and we hope that this video, Liquid Paper, fully expresses that.
Along that same line of seamlessness, Liquid Paper is inspired from films such as “Birdman”, to appear as a single continuous shot from start to end. It also features audio samples Bruce Lee’s iconic “Be like Water” interview, which we feel most aptly expresses Virtuoso’s approach to Cardistry and playing card design.
All in all, we hope Liquid Paper thoroughly satisfies, and allows to you to enjoy and appreciate Cardistry as much as we do. Enjoy.

About Air Time feat. the SS15 Virtuoso Deck:
It’s been awhile since Test Room, we know, but as most would know by now, it’s not in Virtuoso’s philosophy to drop a new video every other day or week. We believe in putting our everything into every little thing that we do, even if that means taking longer than most would like us to.
While it leaves some impatient, it allows us to put the thought, care, and refinement into each of our videos that only time allows. The result of that time, however, is a collection of Cardistry videos that we would like to think of as timeless: Cardistry videos that resonate with people in a way that no others do; that you can't help but watch again and again.
As with all our videos, we decided to give Air Time a theme: Freedom.
Far too often, Cardistry videos come across as constrained; a deck of cards trapped between a pair of headless hands. We admit, we’ve been culprits of this ourselves.
So rather than adding to the countless close-up Cardistry videos out there, many of the frames in Air Time are widely shot, and capture not just the movement of the hands, but the entire body.
To do this, we decided to start with a blank slate. More precisely, Air Time begins with a large white space on which we would paint a picture of the things that inspire us: fashion, minimalism, and movement. Upon this mostly monochromatic palette, we then dropped in the vibrant new SS15 Virtuoso deck to stand out and speak for itself.
Rather than performing every card flourish with speed, we utilised a high speed camera to slow things down. Instead of keeping every move in the the hands, we experimented with different levels; from surfaces, to our feet, and of course, the air.
Air Time also marks the first time we’ve created a Cardistry showcase video with the Virtuoso deck beyond the typical trailer, and the first time we’ve featured the fascinating new genre of Cardistry that the Virtuoso deck birthed: Static Cardistry.
In other words, everything in Air Time, gets more airtime.
Air Time is short, sweet, and we hope, satisfying. Our wish is that you enjoy it as much as we did creating it, and that it helps to get the art of Cardistry more airtime across the globe as well. So have fun watching this little video, and if you like it, help us get it out there.

About Versus feat. the SS15 Virtuoso Deck:
One of the most common questions that card flourishers ask us is this:
“What’s the best deck for Cardistry?”
The problem is, as the creators of the Virtuoso deck, we’re obviously biased. So rather than take our word for it, we’ve put together a short video for you called “Versus” that pits the SS15 Virtuoso deck against classic back designs.
If you’re wondering why we’ve used those three decks in particular, it’s because they represent the three default back designs that almost every deck out there is based on: intricate back designs, repeating pattern back designs, and simple back designs.
Don’t get us wrong; we think classic back designs are beautiful. We don’t, however, feel that they make your card flourishes look beautiful.
In Versus, you’ll finally get to see why we had to invent a new type of back design, Adaptive Aesthetics. You’ll also see why the Virtuoso deck remains as the only deck truly designed for Cardistry, and the choice of top card flourishers around the world. Enjoy.

Virtuoso
A virtuoso (from Italian virtuoso [virˈtwoːzo] or [virtuˈoːso], "virtuous", Late Latin virtuosus, Latin virtus, "virtue", "excellence", "skill", or "manliness") is an individual who possesses outstanding technical ability in a particular art or field such as fine arts, music, singing, playing a musical instrument or composition. This word also refers to a person who has cultivated appreciation of artistic excellence, either as a connoisseur or collector. Virtuoso's plural form is either virtuosi or the Anglicisation, virtuosos, and the feminine forms are virtuosa and virtuose.
Virtuosity defined
Music in the Western civilization by Piero Weiss and Richard Taruskin gives the following definition of virtuoso:
The defining element of virtuosity is the performance ability of the musician in question, who is capable of displaying feats of skill well above the average performer.
Especially in music, both critics and musicians have mixed opinions on virtuosity. While the skill implied is clearly positive, musicians focused on virtuosity have been criticized for overlooking substance and emotion in favor of raw technical prowess.

If you’re wondering why we’ve used those three decks in particular, it’s because they represent the three default back designs that almost every deck out there is based on: intricate back designs, repeating pattern back designs, and simple back designs. Unbeknown to those most outside the magic community, the seemingly insignificant white borders on the back of playing cards have always been considered sacred to the magician. Borders aid in the concealment sleight of hand, especially for close-up magic, and till today are regarded as a necessary feature by most card magicians.
Yet, while Cardistry was first birthed centuries ago from magicians who desired to add some flourishes to their card handling, it in itself contains no magic at all. In fact, while card magic involves the concealment of movement, Cardistry is the very opposite - revolving around the expression and aesthetics of movement and form. In other words, borders often end up obscuring what the Cardist wishes to showcase.
Unfortunately, Cardistry was always regarded as a niche within the niche of magic, and Cardists had to make do with whatever decks they could get in their hands - that is, until Virtuoso came along.
In 2012, the Virtuoso deck made history as the first deck designed for Cardistry. Derived from Cardistry’s core movements and forms, the first Virtuoso deck featured a functional back design - Adaptive Aesthetics - that adapted to visually accentuate every card flourish a Cardist performed.
While it quickly proceeded to become the choice of top cardists around the globe, a single element always dampened its full visual potential - its inclusion of borders. So for the latest Virtuoso deck, we decided to go beyond the existing borders of Cardistry, by literally removing them.
The result is an edge-to-edge back design that not only magnifies each shape for maximum visibility, but also liberates the cards to seamlessly merge with one another to establish new forms. It’s what we consider our boldest and most breathtaking deck of cards to date, and we hope that this video, Liquid Paper, fully expresses that.
Along that same line of seamlessness, Liquid Paper is inspired from films such as “Birdman”, to appear as a single continuous shot from start to end. It also features audio samples Bruce Lee’s iconic “Be like Water” interview, which we feel most aptly expresses Virtuoso’s approach to Cardistry and playing card design.
All in all, we hope Liquid Paper thoroughly satisfies, and allows to you to enjoy and appreciate Cardistry as much as we do. Enjoy.

The result of that time, however, is a collection of Cardistry videos that we would like to think of as timeless: Cardistry videos that resonate with people in a way that no others do; that you can't help but watch again and again.
As with all our videos, we decided to give Air Time a theme: Freedom.
Far too often, Cardistry videos come across as constrained; a deck of cards trapped between a pair of headless hands. We admit, we’ve been culprits of this ourselves.
So rather than adding to the countless close-up Cardistry videos out there, many of the frames in Air Time are widely shot, and capture not just the movement of the hands, but the entire body.
To do this, we decided to start with a blank slate. More precisely, Air Time begins with a large white space on which we would paint a picture of the things that inspire us: fashion, minimalism, and movement. Upon this mostly monochromatic palette, we then dropped in the vibrant new SS15 Virtuoso deck to stand out and speak for itself.
Rather than performing every card flourish with speed, we utilised a high speed camera to slow things down. Instead of keeping every move in the the hands, we experimented with different levels; from surfaces, to our feet, and of course, the air.
Air Time also marks the first time we’ve created a Cardistry showcase video with the Virtuoso deck beyond the typical trailer, and the first time we’ve featured the fascinating new genre of Cardistry that the Virtuoso deck birthed: Static Cardistry.
In other words, everything in Air Time, gets more airtime.
Air Time is short, sweet, and we hope, satisfying. Our wish is that you enjoy it as much as we did creating it, and that it helps to get the art of Cardistry more airtime across the globe as well. So have fun watching this little video, and if you like it, help us get it out there.

One of the most common questions that card flourishers ask us is this:
“What’s the best deck for Cardistry?”
The problem is, as the creators of the Virtuoso deck, we’re obviously biased. So rather than take our word for it, we’ve put together a short video for you called “Versus” that pits the SS15 Virtuoso deck against classic back designs.
If you’re wondering why we’ve used those three decks in particular, it’s because they represent the three default back designs that almost every deck out there is based on: intricate back designs, repeating pattern back designs, and simple back designs.
Don’t get us wrong; we think classic back designs are beautiful. We don’t, however, feel that they make your card flourishes look beautiful.
