Doc Watson
Arthel Lane "Doc" Watson (March 3, 1923 – May 29, 2012) was an American guitarist, songwriter, and singer of bluegrass, folk, country, blues, and gospel music. Watson won seven Grammy awards as well as a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Watson's flatpicking skills and knowledge of traditional American music were highly regarded. He performed with his son, guitarist Merle Watson, for over 15 years until Merle's death in 1985 in an accident on the family farm.
Biography
Early life
Watson was born in Deep Gap, North Carolina. According to Watson on his three-CD biographical recording Legacy, he got the nickname "Doc" during a live radio broadcast when the announcer remarked that his given name Arthel was odd and he needed an easy nickname. A fan in the crowd shouted "Call him Doc!" presumably in reference to the literary character Sherlock Holmes's sidekick Doctor Watson. The name stuck ever since.
An eye infection caused Doc Watson to lose his vision before his first birthday. He was taught by his parents to work hard and care for himself. He attended North Carolina's school for the visually impaired, The Governor Morehead School, in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Doc Watson (album)
Doc Watson is the self-titled debut album by Doc Watson, released by Vanguard Records in 1964. The musical supervision was credited to Ralph Rinzler.
It was re-issued on CD by Ace Records in 1995 and numerous tracks have been used in compilations such as Vanguard Years and The Best of Doc Watson 1964-1968.
In celebration of Vanguard Records 60th Anniversary in 2010, it was re-issued with original artwork on a limited edition 180 gram vinyl record pressing of 500 copies for Record Store Day on April 17.
Reception
Writing for Allmusic, music critic Jim Smith wrote the album "The album is incredibly varied, from the stark, banjo-driven "Country Blues" to the humorous "Intoxicated Rat," and many of these songs became Watson standards, especially his signature song "Black Mountain Rag." His incredible flat-picking skills may have been what initially wowed his audiences, but it was Watson's complete mastery of the folk idiom that assured his lasting popularity."

Let me put it straight out there. I loved Earl Scruggs as a musician and as a man. I also felt the same way about Dr. Watson. I also felt the same way about rules son who is just 16 years old in this documentary, Randy Scruggs. I set up the microphone, sat myself down in his seat with my handheld 16mm camera, and they just played. Having fun. Apologies for the poor quality of sound. After trawling around here for this version I decided to dig an old cassette tape version out and share it with the world. It's the reason I bought a banjo in the first place, but obviously my own awkward attempts can't get anywhere near this superb rendition by the Doc and his late Son Merle. Just heard of the tragic loss from a Youtuber, yngeldorf. Doc's death yesterday leaves a huge gap in the surviving contributors of 20th Century culture. RIP Doc.

An Evening with Doc Watson
This is a great UNC-TV production from around 1997. Lot's of great blues ...Doc is accompanied by his grandson Richard Watson - Merle's son. Doc has often been called a national treasure but his influence goes far beyond the US. Doc was a an international icon revered all over the world. As a matter of fact the first time I saw Doc was in Nagoya, Japan. He performed with Merle and T Michael Coleman. Let me put it straight out there. I loved Earl Scruggs as a musician and as a man. I also felt the same way about Dr. Watson. I also felt the same way about rules son who is just 16 years old in this documentary, Randy Scruggs. I set up the microphone, sat myself down in his seat with my handheld 16mm camera, and they just played. Having fun. On Doc Watson's front lawn at his home in the Appalachian mountains of Western North Carolina.

My classic 90 minute music documentary records Earl Scruggs and Bill Monroe and Earl and his son Randy and Doc Watson and his son Merle, in informal scenes playing & singing together. If you love Doc Watson and Bill Monroe and old time Bluegrass Music, you will love watching and listening to this. In 1972, PBS prime-timed a documentary music special on Earl Scruggs the bluegrass banjo picker. It included Bob Dylan, The Byrds, Bill Monroe, Charlie Daniels, The Morris Brothers, and Doc Watson. The film was not available to the public for over 30 years. Now it is available again. Said Bruce Elder of The All Music Guide: "Earl Scruggs was a few years past his partnership with Lester Flatt when made did 'Earl Scruggs: The Bluegrass Banjo Legend' a filled with stars effort that succeeds. There are great scenes at the Grand Ole Opry with Bill Monroe, at the homes of Doc Watson and members of Earl's North Carolina family, at the The Byrds ranch, at the home of The Morris Brothers (Salty Dog Blues), in Carmel, NY with Bob Dylan, etc. etc. The music here is glorious." Apologies for the poor quality of sound. After trawling around here for this version I decided to dig an old cassette tape version out and share it with the world. It's the reason I bought a banjo in the first place, but obviously my own awkward attempts can't get anywhere near this superb rendition by the Doc and his late Son Merle.
Just heard of the tragic loss from a Youtuber, yngeldorf. Doc's death yesterday leaves a huge gap in the surviving contributors of 20th Century culture. RIP Doc.

Arthel Lane "Doc" Watson (March 3, 1923 – May 29, 2012) was an American guitarist, songwriter, and singer of bluegrass, folk, country, blues, and gospel music. Watson won seven Grammy awards as well as a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Watson's flatpicking skills and knowledge of traditional American music were highly regarded. He performed with his son, guitarist Merle Watson, for over 15 years until Merle's death in 1985 in an accident on the family farm.
Biography
Early life
Watson was born in Deep Gap, North Carolina. According to Watson on his three-CD biographical recording Legacy, he got the nickname "Doc" during a live radio broadcast when the announcer remarked that his given name Arthel was odd and he needed an easy nickname. A fan in the crowd shouted "Call him Doc!" presumably in reference to the literary character Sherlock Holmes's sidekick Doctor Watson. The name stuck ever since.
An eye infection caused Doc Watson to lose his vision before his first birthday. He was taught by his parents to work hard and care for himself. He attended North Carolina's school for the visually impaired, The Governor Morehead School, in Raleigh, North Carolina.
