Kennedy Journalism Award and a Pulitzer Prize finalist, Rall's work has appeared in hundreds of newspapers, as well as such magazines as Time, Newsweek, Fortune and MAD. I guess this make me a left leaning liberal. Seems like there is a case for folks earning some extra net income and accumulating assets, even luxuries. That said, having people starving, freezing, dying from pollution, denied the opportunity to get an education, etc., etc. is a case for systematic progressive taxation and then the ultimate in deferred taxation, the estate tax.

Who is starving in obese 21st Century America? Who is freezing? Who is dying from pollution? When you actually begin to analyze the situation, the opportunities in America for basic life sustenance are the greatest in the history of mankind. Get a roommate, a job, and an apartment…you can live, on your own, for less than a $1000 a month in parts of the US. Education is subsidized to the hilt, too. Go to a community college and learn a trade. Stop feeling sorry for yourself!

There are philosophers who spent their entire lives discussing economies and surplus and fair distribution vs rewards/punishments.

Well said! That’s what I did years ago, I’m now 53 and supporting a family of 4, and doing pretty well. These snowflakes need to stop feeling entitled and get off of their butts.

Mean while, the Orange Beast is teaming up with Putin to be king of the world.

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing. If Ted had been listening in class instead of doodling, he’d actually understand Marxism. Well, wait: Looking at his art, maybe he was doodling AND listening.
lonecat said, about 12 hours ago
Just about no one on the left calls for income equality. Certainly Marx did not call for income equality. Rall needs to do some homework.

Left isn’t socialism, or communism in America. It’s liberalism. Your mental thesaurus has been compromised.

Ted, I think you should use the term “neoliberal”. “Liberal” is now no more than a veneer on a philosophy that is ultra-capitalist and considers war an integral part of success in business. Would an actual liberal promote the TPP, war in the Mideast, fracking, and Wall Street hegemony?

So did I, worked a minimum wage job, and put myself through school, had a 2 room apartment and could cover food and transportation. Now, a minimum wage job won’t cover even that minimal life style, and tuition is completely impossible. Yes, we did it back then, but you couldn’t do it today.

It’s a great illustration of the new term “post-truth”. Facts and definitions give way to emotional appeal. Ted wants to be able to set up a false distinction, so he just says what he wants to make a pseudo-contrast and that makes it all A-OK. Get used to a lot more of this kind of argument coming down the road…

Congratulations on the recent election, OC. The loser said she was going to put you out of business.

Let’s smash crony, state sponsored capitalism instead of reverting to disproven 19th Century concepts and cliches. At least Rall’s heart, if not his mind, is in the right place.

What is “Marxism”? Most people not just Cons haven’t the foggiest notion.
