The NSW government is openly canvassing the possibility of a new metro rail line through Sydney Olympic Park to help support major expansion of new housing and commercial development in the area.
Planning Minister Rob Stokes and Sports Minister Stuart Ayres released an updated masterplan for the former Olympics precinct on Monday, which includes new proposals for 45-storey towers in the area.

Sydney Olympic Park 2030 Masterplan
NSW Government have revealed an updated masterplan for Sydney Olympic Park.
But the masterplan, which is now open to community consultation, does not include firm details about when and where new rail connections through the area will be built.
Fairfax Media revealed last month that government planners were working on a potential metro rail line from the city to Parramatta, with stops likely to be included at Olympic Park and the Bays Precinct around Rozelle.
As part of that plan, a proposed light rail link from Parramatta to Strathfield through Olympic Park was likely to be scaled back.
At a press conference to discuss the release of the updated Olympic Park masterplan on Monday, Mr Stokes offered little clarity on when new light or heavy rail lines would be built, but confirmed that the government was considering a metro train.
"We will look for opportunities wherever that might exist in terms of improving public transport connections," Mr Stokes said.
"Whether that be potential future metros, whether that be the light rail that is committed to, whether it be the new ferry connections, bus connections or connections into existing heavy rail stations," he said.
As part of the plan, the government says bus services will be introduced to cross the new Bennelong Bridge to Rhodes Station.
The masterplan anticipates another 10,000 homes built around Olympic Park over the next 15 years, to house about 23,500 people.
The government is also hopeful of new commercial developments through the area, which has struggled to attract tenants. It also says it would provision for a future school in the area.
"There needs to be more opportunities for people to live, play and work all in the one area," Mr Stokes said.
Mr Ayres said: "We are going to make sure that there are 10 times as many homes available on this precinct, 10 times as many jobs."
The masterplan is on public exhibition until Friday, November 11.
