The Blue House is the equivalent of The White House in the U.S. It is the executive office and official residence of the President of the Republic of Korea (South Korea) and is located in Seoul. It is actually a complex of buildings built in traditional Korean architecture. The Korean name for Blue House translates to "pavilion of blue tiles" and there are about 150,000 blue tiles on the roof of the main building.
In 1968, North Korean infiltrators almost reached the building in an attempt to assassinate President Park Chung-hee. 28 North Koreans, 68 South Koreans, and 4 Americans were killed.

So it was fitting that President Park Geun-hye invited U.S. Forces Korea's commander to the top office for lunch.
She expressed appreciation for the strong alliance between the two countries and vowed closer coordination against North Korean threats.
Park Ji-won shares with us the president's remarks.
During a luncheon on Friday with the leadership of U.S. Forces Korea and related officials,... President Park Geun-hye stressed the need for a strong bilateral alliance... to resolve the security crisis on the Korean peninsula.
"The most efficient means of reining in North Korea's madness is a unified defense based on the South Korea-U.S. alliance. We must reinforce the alliance and maintain full defense readiness to suppress North Korea's nuclear development, establish permanent peace and achieve denuclearization on the Korean peninsula."
The U.S. Forces of Korea commander also vowed to keep the alliance strong,... and expressed confidence that the lessons gained from the recent Ulchi Freedom Guardian exercise helps ensure that the allies will be victorious if called to fight.
"We are an alliance, and we are honored to serve as an alliance defending the Republic of Korea and our national interests. And our alliance is unshakable, it is stronger than ever, and our actions as well as words should make that very clear."
President Park noted that the bilateral alliance has grown into a more comprehensive... global strategic partnership... aimed at promoting peace on the international stage.
"The two countries will always be together on the road to building world peace. USFK is the acronym for the U.S. Forces Korea, but I think of it as the 'Unbreakably Special Friends of Korea.'"
Ambassador to South Korea Mark Lippert,... South Korean Defense Minister Han Min-koo... and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Lee Sun-jin,... along with other key members of South Korea's military leadership... were also present at the luncheon.

In response to a media report of a possible Korea-Japan leaders' summit next month, Korea's presidential office says no talks are currently under way for a meeting between President Park Geun-hye and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
Speaking to reporters Sunday, an official from Cheong Wa Dae said the two countries would first have to resolve a range of historical and territorial issues before their leaders can meet face-to-face.
The comments came after Japan's Nihon Keizai Shimbun newspaper said Tokyo had high hopes for a leaders' summit with Seoul and that it would soon propose a meeting on the sidelines of next month's Nuclear Security Summit in The Hague.
The official, however, declined to confirm whether or not Seoul has received such a proposal from Tokyo.

This is the first time the two leaders will meet... since they both took office in 2013.
Norway is an important strategic partner in Seoul's shipbuilding and maritime affairs... with over Half of Norway's ship orders won by Seoul last year... and a key country in realizing Seoul's Eurasia Initiative to link the continents.
As a long time ally, Oslo has also strongly advocated imposing and implementing sanctions on North Korea for its nuclear provocations.

Blue House
The Blue House (Korean: 청와대; Hanja: 靑瓦臺; Cheong Wa Dae; literally "pavilion of blue tiles") is the executive office and official residence of the South Korean head of state, the President of the Republic of Korea and located in the capital city of Seoul. The Blue House is in fact a complex of buildings, built largely in the traditional Korean architectural style with some modern elements.
Built upon the site of the royal garden of the Joseon Dynasty (1392–1897), the Blue House now consists of the Main Office Hall (Korean: 본관; Hanja: 本館), the Presidential Residence, the State Reception House (Korean: 영빈관; Hanja: 迎賓館), the Chunchugwan (Korean: 춘추관; Hanja: 春秋館) Press Hall, and the Secretariat Buildings. The entire complex covers approximately 250,000 square metres or 62 acres.
History
The location of Cheong Wa Dae was the site of a royal villa in what was then Hanyang, the southern capital of the Goryeo dynasty (918–1392). It was built by King Sukjong (r. 1095–1105) in 1104. Goryeo's principal capital was at Kaesŏng, and it also maintained a western capital at Pyongyang and an eastern capital at Gyeongju.

During a luncheon on Friday with the leadership of U.S. Forces Korea and related officials,... President Park Geun-hye stressed the need for a strong bilateral alliance... to resolve the security crisis on the Korean peninsula.
"The most efficient means of reining in North Korea's madness is a unified defense based on the South Korea-U.S. alliance. We must reinforce the alliance and maintain full defense readiness to suppress North Korea's nuclear development, establish permanent peace and achieve denuclearization on the Korean peninsula."
The U.S. Forces of Korea commander also vowed to keep the alliance strong,... and expressed confidence that the lessons gained from the recent Ulchi Freedom Guardian exercise helps ensure that the allies will be victorious if called to fight.
"We are an alliance, and we are honored to serve as an alliance defending the Republic of Korea and our national interests. And our alliance is unshakable, it is stronger than ever, and our actions as well as words should make that very clear."
President Park noted that the bilateral alliance has grown into a more comprehensive... global strategic partnership... aimed at promoting peace on the international stage.
"The two countries will always be together on the road to building world peace. USFK is the acronym for the U.S. Forces Korea, but I think of it as the 'Unbreakably Special Friends of Korea.'"
Ambassador to South Korea Mark Lippert,... South Korean Defense Minister Han Min-koo... and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Lee Sun-jin,... along with other key members of South Korea's military leadership... were also present at the luncheon.

In response to a media report of a possible Korea-Japan leaders' summit next month, Korea's presidential office says no talks are currently under way for a meeting between President Park Geun-hye and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
Speaking to reporters Sunday, an official from Cheong Wa Dae said the two countries would first have to resolve a range of historical and territorial issues before their leaders can meet face-to-face.
The comments came after Japan's Nihon Keizai Shimbun newspaper said Tokyo had high hopes for a leaders' summit with Seoul and that it would soon propose a meeting on the sidelines of next month's Nuclear Security Summit in The Hague.
The official, however, declined to confirm whether or not Seoul has received such a proposal from Tokyo.

The top of our house is the other house’s balcony, from where there is a perfect view on the dark blue water of the Aegean Sea. The venetian blinds summon the color of the blue sky, the rows of cubic houses are sometimes broken by a blue-domed temple or a windmill. The balconies are full of geranium. The smell of gyros is in the air, from the cafes we hear the bouzouki, and the sight of the sunset from the taverns is unforgettable. The sun is scorching, one can smell the salty air and hear the seagulls, while down below the white boats sail towards their unknown destination.

Just to the north is Nuevo Polanco, a former warehouse area rapidly being transformed by new architectural visions, such as the Museo Soumaya and Museo Jumex.
To the south of the city is Coyoacán. In the early 20th century the district’s artists, writers and intellectuals inspired not only Mexico, but the entire world. Visit The Blue House, the birthplace of Frieda Kahlo, and the Museo Casa Estudio Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo, where these two giants of Mexican art worked, lived and loved.
Just to the south are the incredible murals and buildings of Ciudad Universitaria, which, when constructed in the 1950s, was the city’s largest single building project since the time of the Aztecs.
The spirit of bohemia continues amid the sophisticated hues and beauty of districts such as Roma and Condesa. At Xochimilco, simply float away on a riot of color on the last of the city’s Aztec canals.

The Korean name literally translates to “pavilion of blue tiles.” The signature markings of the Presidential Residence of Cheong Wa Dae are its blue tiles. Just a couple of hours after Pyongyang's missile launches, the Presidential office of Cheong Wa Dae convened a National Security Council meeting, chaired by NSC chief Kim Kwan-jin.
The council analyzed Pyongyang's missile capabilities based on the trajectory of the ballistic missiles launched Wednesday,... and discussed countermeasures, both on defense and diplomatic fronts.
Later in the afternoon, President Park attended the National Unification Advisory Council meeting, as scheduled.
Over 500 advisors gathered from the Americas, Japan and China... to discuss the path to peaceful unification of the two Koreas.
Park expressed appreciation to those building international support for unification on the Korean peninsula.
Although she did not directly mention Wednesday morning's missile launches, Park warned North Korea to refrain from further provocations... and to abandon its nuclear weapons program.
"If Pyongyang continues to push forward with its provocations, no country in the world will build ties with North Korea, and no organization will lend a helping hand to Pyongyang. The North Korean regime must realize that only complete isolation and self-destruction await at the end of reckless provocations."
"Against North Korea's continued provocations... President Park once again stressed the need for national unity towards unification... and called on the people to diligently work towards the peace and prosperity of the nation.

The Park administration announced a package of policies aimed at fostering future growth engines.

Groundbreaking, innovative policies.
That's how President Park Geun-hye described her goals for reforming the regulations hindering new growth engines... at the fifth ministerial deregulation meeting on Friday at the presidential office.
"Deregulation is the most effective way to foster creation and investment in the private sector... and provide customized solutions for each case, while saving on costs. Our economy can only take another leap when we boldly remove regulations blocking the growth of new industries."
The Park administration has continuously pledged to remove as many regulations as possible, with the exception of those deemed absolutely necessary.
To ensure Korea does not lag behind in the global market, the administration will lower the barriers for new industries to levels similar to those in most advanced countries.
Developing drones and road-testing autonomous vehicles will now become much easier.
The government will also take preemptive deregulatory measures to boost economic sentiment... and improve the synergy between the regional and central governments... to better reflect demand from the field.
With nearly 3-hundred deregulatory tasks submitted by businesses expected to be addressed over the next two months... the government expects to save some 3-billion dollars and create 13-thousand jobs in the process.

Earlier this Monday, President Park Geun-hye and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe sat down for their first-ever bilateral summit.
The meeting came after a three-and-a-half year freeze... and with thorny matters such as the decades-old issue of the Japanese military′s enslavement of women leading up to and during World War II.
Our presidential office correspondent Hwang Sung-hee reports. Topping the agenda at President Park′s first-ever summit with Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was Japan′s wartime sexual enslavement of Korean women.
At the start of the talks, President Park expressed her hopes for the summit.
"I hope today′s summit can be a broad yet sincere meeting to heal the painful wounds of the past so it can be a valuable opportunity for advancing bilateral relations."
However, Prime Minister Abe′s focus was on building a future-oriented relationship with Seoul.
"I think highly of the steps we took in Japan-Korea relations over the last 50 years. I am willing to work with President Park to open a new era for a future-oriented Japan-Korea relationship."
More than 200-thousand women, mostly Korean, were forced to serve the Japanese military before and during World War Two.
And, with only 47 comfort women remaining in Korea, President Park urged for a swift resolution, calling it the biggest stumbling block to their bilateral relations.
The presidential office of Cheong Wa Dae said the two leaders agreed to work on the issue.
"The two leaders acknowledged that this year marks the 50th anniversary of normalizing diplomatic ties and commanded that the comfort women talks be sped up so the issue can be resolved as early as possible."
Other agenda items included increasing cooperation on countering North Korean threats as well as Korea′s possible joining the Trans-Pacific Partnership.
Prime Minister Abe said he was closely following Korea′s movements regarding the 12-nation trade pact that includes Japan, and the U.S.

For one, Korea and France will jointly work on finding new growth engines through bolstered cooperation in innovative technology.
As part of the plan, the so-called "French Tech Hub" a French institution that supports start-ups will open a Seoul office next year.
A new MOU promises expanded cooperation in space issues... such as satellite navigation and space exploration.
The two countries have long been partners in this area, with France taking part in the opening of Korea′s first spaceport, the Naro Space Center.
Another key agreement is on more exchanges of broadcast material and content.
For that, France will support Korean global channels Arirang TV and KBS World to expand programming in the French market, while Korea will support the French networks France 24 and TV5 Style in Seoul.
Arirang TV has led the spread of hallyu, or the Korean Wave,... in the European nation by reaching out to French viewers since December 2005.
"And these are just some of the agreements reached at the summit.
The two leaders also agreed to set up a strategic dialogue channel between their foreign ministries... to follow up on the Action Plan that was adopted today, Conn-young."

Sung-hee, the key agenda items of the meeting today?
"Today′s meeting was aimed at reviewing the progress made in unification preparation over the past year.
President Park opened the session saying that the two Koreas must work on expanding the inter-Korean channel that they secured through their landmark agreement in August.
But the meeting was also an opportunity to touch upon the ongoing history textbook controversy in the nation... with the president stressing that a solid sense of history is essential for reunification."
"Even if we achieve reunification, it could lead to a horrible situation where we are so confused that we lose control and, as a consequence, rule based on ideology."
The comment comes as the government is preparing to re-take control over history textbook publishing for secondary schools starting in 2017.
The move has sparked controversy across the nation.
The government says the move will eliminate what it calls left-leaning content in existing books,... while some call it a "challenge to democracy."
President Park also revealed plans to increase government support for inter-Korean people-to-people exchanges in areas like culture, sports and history.
She said resolving Pyongyang′s humanitarian issue and building infrastructure in the North is vital for bringing the Koreas together.
"By establishing an inter-Korean exchange and cooperation office, I hope to expand cooperation that is mutually beneficial for both South and North Korea in areas including disaster and safety management and underground resources."
The president also said reunification cannot be achieved by Seoul′s solitary efforts.

"Even if we achieve reunification, it could lead to a horrible situation where we are so confused that we lose control and, as a consequence, rule based on ideology."
The comment comes as the government is preparing to re-take control over history textbook publishing for secondary schools starting in 2017.
The move has sparked controversy across the nation.
The government says the move will eliminate what it calls left-leaning content in existing books,... while some call it a "challenge to democracy."
President Park also revealed plans to increase government support for inter-Korean people-to-people exchanges in areas like culture, sports and history.
She said resolving Pyongyang′s humanitarian issue and building infrastructure in the North is vital for bringing the Koreas together.
"By establishing an inter-Korean exchange and cooperation office, I hope to expand cooperation that is mutually beneficial for both South and North Korea in areas including disaster and safety management and underground resources."
The president also said reunification cannot be achieved by Seoul′s solitary efforts.

The event was the first of its kind since February.
Hosting the heads of the Korea Tripartite Commission, the Federation of Korea Trade Unions, the Korea Employers Federation... and top officials like labor minister Lee Ki-kweon,... President Park promised to remain open to further discussion while reforms are pushed forward.
The promise follows the Tripartite Commission′s landmark agreement on labor market reforms earlier this month.
President Park gave special thanks to the labor union, for sharing the burden and difficulties that come with reform.
"I believe that the spirit of concession and compromise that the labor, management and government showed this time could eventually become a good model of labor reform."
Though the agreement on reforms still needs approval from parliament, President Park highlighted that it will give hope to generations of families in Korea... as it is key to relieving youth unemployment.

SEOUL, Aug. 25 (Yonhap) -- South and North Korea produced an agreement Tuesday on defusing heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula, after days of marathon negotiations, Cheong Wa Dae said.
North Korea expressed regret over its provocations and promised that they won't recur -- a key demand of South Korea, said Kim Kwan-jin, President Park Geun-hye's national security adviser.
The deal came hours after Park warned South Korea would take measures and continue propaganda broadcasts unless North Korea offered a clear apology and promised not to stage any more provocations.
Tensions between the Koreas had risen dramatically in recent weeks after South Korea accused North Korea of being behind a landmine attack that maimed two South Korean soldiers.
The North also fired artillery shells across the border last Thursday, prompting South Korea to fire back dozens of shells.
The North has denied responsibility in both cases.
South Korea agreed to stop anti-Pyongyang broadcasts on condition of no abnormal situations on the Korean Peninsula, Kim said.
South Korea has resumed the propaganda broadcasts along the heavily fortified border earlier this month for the first time in 11 years in retaliation against North Korea for the landmine attack.
North Korea views the broadcasts critical of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un as an insult to its dignity. The isolated country is also concerned that an influx of outside information could pose a threat to Kim.
The two Koreas also agreed to push for reunions of families separated by the Korean War in September.

President Park Geun-hye expressed her disappointment immediately after prime minister nominee Moon Chang-keuk had announced at a press conference his voluntary withdrawal.
[Soundbite] MIN KYUNG-WOOK (Spokesman, Cheong Wa Dae) : "The reason for holding confirmation hearings is to vet a nominee and help people make their decisions. The president said that it was regrettable that Moon couldn't get a hearing."
The president made it clear that from now on a nominee should be given a chance to explain misinformed charges at a confirmation hearing. She stressed that nominee individuals and their families shouldn't be forced to live in disgrace and suffering for the rest of their lives. The Moon controversy came to an end with the embattled journalist voluntarily withdrawing his nomination, but the Presidential Office cannot escape the blame for the repeated appointment debacles. Cheong Wa Dae will therefore speed up its selection of another nominee in order to normalize state affairs as quickly as possible. The key criterion for a premier designate is likely to be the likelihood of the nominee passing a confirmation hearing at the National Assembly. The short-listed political figures for the premiership include former Gyeonggi Governor Kim Moon-soo, Saenuri Party Floor Leader Lee Wan-koo, Saenuri Party official Kim Jong-in, and Han Kwang-ok, head of the Presidential Committee on National Cohesion. Some are speculating that the incumbent premier Chung Hong-won may even be allowed to remain in office. In order to get the government working again, President Park has submitted to the National Assembly confirmation hearing requests for the chief of the National Intelligence Agency and seven minister nominees.

Cheong Wa Dae. President Park Geun-hye said the foundation for inter-Korean talks must not be shattered because there should always be room for dialog even during wartime.
[Soundbite] PARK GEUN-HYE (President) : "We will strictly respond to provocations, but always leave the door open for dialog to establish peace."
Park stressed that the two Koreas must think of the proposed second round of high-level talks, and take this as an opportunity to improve relations and even discuss the lifting of the May 24th sanctions against the North.
[Soundbite] "The South and the North must sit down and seriously discuss the May 24 sanctions, which are a hot issue now, in a responsible way."
It's the first time that the president mentioned the May 24th sanctions as a point of discussion and it is construed as a positive sign in her attitude toward the Stalinist state. However, Park also pointed to the need for responsibility and genuineness saying Seoul's stance would not change merely for the sake of inter-Korean dialog. The president also ordered her administration to devise detailed measures for the creation of an ecological peace park at the DMZ. Park pledged support not only in the form of humanitarian aid, but also in terms of human rights to improve the lives of the North Korean people.

The president's official meeting with the political party leaders will take place for the first time since September 2013. The opposition party says the upcoming meeting was organized at the request of Cheong Wa Dae. The president gave a positive answer to the request at a meeting held behind closed doors when she was attending an event on October 6. At the upcoming meeting, Park will reportedly ask the political party leaders to pass the budget bill before the deadline, and smoothly process the bills on public pension reform and economic improvement. The president and the politicians will also likely exchange opinions on the special law concerning the Sewol ferry disaster and the Government Organization Act.
