The Brahmaputra (/ˌbrɑːməˈpuːtrə/ [brɔmmɔput̪rɔ nɔd̪]), also called Tsangpo-Brahmaputra, is a trans-boundary river and one of the major rivers of Asia.
With its origin in the Chemayungdung glacier, located on the northern side of the Himalayas in Burang County of Tibet as the Yarlung Tsangpo River, it flows across southern Tibet to break through the Himalayas in great gorges (including the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon) and into Arunachal Pradesh (India), where it is known as Dihang or Siang. It flows southwest through the Assam Valley as Brahmaputra and south through Bangladesh as the Jamuna (not to be mistaken with Yamuna of India). In the vast Ganges Delta, it merges with the Padma, the popular name of the river Ganges in Bangladesh, and finally the Meghna and from here it is known as Meghna before emptying into the Bay of Bengal.
About 1,800 mi (2,900 km) long, the Brahmaputra is an important river for irrigation and transportation. The average depth of the river is 124 ft (38 m) and maximum depth is 380 ft (120 m). The river is prone to catastrophic flooding in spring when the Himalayan snows melt. The average discharge of the river is about 19,300 m3/s (680,000 cu ft/s), and floods can reach over 100,000 m3/s (3,500,000 cu ft/s). It is a classic example of a braided river and is highly susceptible to channel migration and avulsion. It is also one of the few rivers in the world that exhibit a tidal bore. It is navigable for most of its length.

A major magic moment of the journey! Fifteen minutes after departing from Goalpara Town, we went over the Brahmaputra river on the Naranarayan Setu bridge. The train was on the bridge for a good three minutes. I was rather surprised to see islands in the middle of the river. Signs of a drought, perhaps? FYI, the 2.28 km long bridge is the third one across the Brahmaputra and was inaugurated on April 15, 1998.

http://www.mountainkingdoms.com This video gives an insight into the many delights you can enjoy on one of Mountain Kingdoms' holidays cruising the mighty Brahmaputra river. At almost 3,000km long, flowing from the high mountains of Tibet, through northeast India and into northern Bangladesh, the Brahmaputra is one of Asia’s mightiest rivers. During the spring, when the snows of the Himalaya melt, the icy waters spill and tumble through gorges, channels and sandbanks, then slow upon reaching the tranquil plains of Assam. Here the river becomes the lifeblood of the region, flooding and enriching the surrounding fields and renewing the grasslands which support much of the varied wildlife of Assam. Tribal communities make their living along the banks of the Brahmaputra growing rice in the p...

Wild Frontiers' Jonny Bealby presents a guide to Calcutta and the Northeast of India. As far as Wild Frontiers is concerned Calcutta and the Northeast is a region that comprises pretty much anything east of Delhi, running along the Ganges flood plain to Calcutta and beyond to the borders of Bangladesh, Burma and Bhutan. If most travellers coming to India head west out of Delhi to Rajasthan, most that don't head east down the Ganges to Varanasi. Most of these travel by air or rail directly to Varanasi but if you are of an adventurous disposition there are many interesting places to stop off at along the route, such as Rishikesh -- where the Beatles stayed and wrote the famous White Album -- or Lucknow, a beautiful city packed with fabulous Moghul architecture. In fact if you're lookin...

It makes a very rapid descent from its original height in Tibet, and finally appears in the plains, where it is called Dihang. It flows for about 35 kilometres (22 mi) and is joined by the Dibang River and the Lohit River at the head of the Assam Valley. Below the Lohit the river is called Brahmaputra, enters the state of Assam and becomes very wide—as wide as 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) in parts of Assam. It is joined in Sonitpur by the Kameng River (or Jia Bhoreli). Between Dibrugarh and Lakhimpur districts the river divides into two channels—the northern Kherkutia channel and the southern Brahmaputra channel. Roughly shaped like a bird with wings stretching along the length of the Brahmaputra river, Assam is the central state in the North-East Region of India and serves as the gateway to the rest of the Seven Sister States. The land of red river and blue hills, Assam comprises three main geographical areas: the Brahmaputra Valley which constitutes the expansive wingspan, the Barak Valley extending like a tail, and the intervening Karbi Plateau and North Cachar Hills. Assam shares its border with Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram and West Bengal; and there are National Highways leading to their capital cities. It also shares international borders with Bhutan and Bangladesh. In ancient times Assam was known as Pragjyotisha or Pragjyotishpura, and Kamarupa,More Info...
