Summary:
Recorded just over a year after Santana played its historic Woodstock Music & Art Fair performance, the band was fast becoming one of the biggest in the world. They were about to release their second album, Abraxas, and were riding high on the heels of three hit songs from their debut album and a new Top 10 hit, a cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Black Magic Woman."
A year earlier - in fact only a few days before the Woodstock Festival - Bill Graham staged the first of several concerts billed as "The Fillmore at Tanglewood." Tanglewood is the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the storied venue had just begun to experiment with staging contemporary concerts on their grounds. Staging a rock concert in a classical venue had yet to be done, so of course the concept of doing so excited Graham. He brought the full-scale Fillmore East production team in, including the Joshua Light Show, and booked a great lineup. This first concert featured B.B King, Jefferson Airplane and The Who, and drew the largest crowd that Tanglewood had ever seen by far.
Buoyed by the event's success, Tanglewood and Graham agreed to stage three similar dates in 1970. The last of these is this show, when Santana headlined after The Voices of East Harlem and the legendary Miles Davis had played (you can hear Mile's set here).
This historic and beautifully recorded performance features a smoking performance by Santana in the last year of their classic lineup, before a young Neal Schon joined the band. We think you'll agree it's an incredible performance by a great band in their prime.

In 1985, BBC-TV, in association with the American cable channel Arts & Entertainment Network (A&E;), produced two documentaries about Tanglewood, the music venue in the Berkshire Hills of western Massachusetts that serves as the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. They feature interviews with renowned composers and conductors Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland, Kurt Masur, Seiji Ozawa, Andre Previn, Gunther Schuller, Joseph Silverstein, and Leonard Slatkin. “So You Want To Be A Conductor?” and “A Place To Make Music” focus on the annual summer academy attended by emerging professional musicians, and chronicle Tanglewood’s origins and development. Tanglewood
Tanglewood is a music venue in the towns of Lenox and Stockbridge in the Berkshire Hills of western Massachusetts. It has been the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra since 1937. Tanglewood is also home to three music schools: the Tanglewood Music Center, Days in the Arts and the Boston University Tanglewood Institute. Besides classical music, Tanglewood hosts the Festival of Contemporary Music, jazz and popular artists, concerts, and frequent appearances by James Taylor, John Williams and the Boston Pops.
First seasons, 1934 & 1935
The history of Tanglewood begins with a series of concerts held on August 23, 25 and 26, 1934 at the Interlaken estate of Daniel Hanna, about a mile from today’s festival site. A few months earlier, composer and conductor Henry Kimball Hadley had scouted the Berkshires for a site and support for his dream of establishing a seasonal classical music festival. He found an enthusiastic and capable patron in Gertrude Robinson Smith. Within a few months they had organized a series of concerts featuring the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, where Hadley once had been the Associate Conductor. Staged in am amphitheater built on the estate's show horse ring, the first concert was attended by Sara Delano Roosevelt the President's mother. Heartened by the success of this effort, Robinson and Hadley organized another well received series of concerts in Interlaken the following summer.

In the second episode of “New Tanglewood Tales: Life On Stage and Off,” BSO musicians describe what it’s like to perform and work with bassoonist Suzanne Nelsen, cellist Owen Young, violist Cathy Basrak, timpanist Tim Genis, and trumpeter Michael Martin. BSO assistant conductor Ken-David Masur talks about his musical training and his upbringing in a musical family, and the episode also gives a glimpse into the lives of children of the BSO musicians – affectionately known as the BSO Brats – and how they spend their summers at Tanglewood.

Tanglewood - A Place To Make Music
In 1985, BBC-TV, in association with the American cable channel Arts & Entertainment Network (A&E;), produced two documentaries about Tanglewood, the music venue in the Berkshire Hills of western Massachusetts that serves as the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. They feature interviews with renowned composers and conductors Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland, Kurt Masur, Seiji Ozawa, Andre Previn, Gunther Schuller, Joseph Silverstein, and Leonard Slatkin. “So You Want To Be A Conductor?” and “A Place To Make Music” focus on the annual summer academy attended by emerging professional musicians, and chronicle Tanglewood’s origins and development. Written and directed by British composer and documentarian Herbert Chappell.

Summary:
Recorded just over a year after Santana played its historic Woodstock Music & Art Fair performance, the band was fast becoming one of the biggest in the world. They were about to release their second album, Abraxas, and were riding high on the heels of three hit songs from their debut album and a new Top 10 hit, a cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Black Magic Woman."
A year earlier - in fact only a few days before the Woodstock Festival - Bill Graham staged the first of several concerts billed as "The Fillmore at Tanglewood." Tanglewood is the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the storied venue had just begun to experiment with staging contemporary concerts on their grounds. Staging a rock concert in a classical venue had yet to be done, so of course the concept of doing so excited Graham. He brought the full-scale Fillmore East production team in, including the Joshua Light Show, and booked a great lineup. This first concert featured B.B King, Jefferson Airplane and The Who, and drew the largest crowd that Tanglewood had ever seen by far.
Buoyed by the event's success, Tanglewood and Graham agreed to stage three similar dates in 1970. The last of these is this show, when Santana headlined after The Voices of East Harlem and the legendary Miles Davis had played (you can hear Mile's set here).
This historic and beautifully recorded performance features a smoking performance by Santana in the last year of their classic lineup, before a young Neal Schon joined the band. We think you'll agree it's an incredible performance by a great band in their prime.

Nearly 900 people are known to have been killed by Hurricane Matthew in Haiti, with aid officials saying up to 90% of some areas has been destroyed.
