Liquid Sky

Liquid Sky is an independent American science fiction film. It debuted at the Montreal Film festival in August 1982 and was well received at several film festivals thereafter. It was produced with a budget of $500,000. It became the most successful independent film of 1983 grossing $1.7 million in the first several months of release.

The film is seen as heavily influencing a club scene that emerged in the early 2000s in Brooklyn, Berlin, Paris, and London called electroclash.

Plot

Amidst the bohemian new wave subculture of New York City in the early 1980s, an avant garde fashion show is to be held in a new wave nightclub in Manhattan. Among the models are bisexual Margaret (Anne Carlisle) and Jimmy (also played by Carlisle). Jimmy is Margaret's rival and nemesis. An apparent drug addict, he constantly hassles Margaret's heroin-dealer girlfriend Adrian (Paula E. Sheppard) for drugs but has no money to pay for them.

Before the show, Jimmy suggests to Margaret that they go to her place, but once there he only cares about finding Adrian's stash of heroin (known in New York in the '70s and '80s as liquid sky). An alien spacecraft — about the size of a dinner plate — lands on the rooftop of Margaret and Adrian's penthouse apartment. A tiny, shapeless alien watches the apartment from inside the UFO.

Liquid Sky are an English progressive metal band from Manchester, UK. Their music combines progressive and symphonic elements, drawing influences from a wide variety of bands like Lacuna Coil, Paradise Lost, Dream Theater and Soilwork.

History

In early 2000, Emily Garrard brought together musicians Jonathan Craven, Audie Lewis, James Ward and Den Constable, to form the band Liquid Sky. Their first release was the EP "Adrenochrome" in 2001. In 2002, Emily was replaced by Fiona Creaby and the band subsequently released another EP, entitled “Nightfall” (2003). The record "Bloodline” was released in 2004, which combined these two EPs along with some previously unreleased tracks. In 2004, the band performed at Bloodstock Open Air Festival. Following this performance, the band parted company with vocalist Fiona Creaby, to be replaced by Hecate Taglietti.

The band toured extensively for several years while honing their material and commenced work on their next album in 2006. In December 2007, Liquid Sky recruited guitarist Andy Midgley as a permanent member of the band. The album - entitled "Identity" - was finally released in February 2008 on new label Insomnia Media, having taken over 2 years to complete (due to technical issues and line-up changes). "Identity" received rave reviews, due to the strong song-writing and the stand-out vocal performance of Hecate. The band completed their first UK headlining tour to promote the album early in 2008.

Liquid sky (effect)

Liquid sky is a popular lighting effect used by clubs and similar venues. It consists of a laser scanning in a flat beam above the head of the crowd; as with most laser displays, for the effect to become apparent the air must be misted by a fog machine. The fog makes the beam of the laser visible, creating a luminous translucent ceiling of light. Air currents and the diffusion of fresh denser fog create a "swirly" or "marbled" effect.

Liquid sky has several advantages over other laser scanning patterns. The most notable one is that the effect can be visible for the entire crowd since you do not need to be "inside" as you would with a tunnel effect. It also avoids the controversial problem of crowd scanning, where the laser beam comes into direct contact with the crowd, possibly causing temporary blindness and sight loss.
