The Crucible is a 1996 drama film written by Arthur Miller adapting his play of the same title, inspired by the Salem witchcraft trials. It was directed by Nicholas Hytner and stars Daniel Day-Lewis as John Proctor, Winona Ryder as Abigail Williams, Paul Scofield as Judge Thomas Danforth, Bruce Davison as Reverend Parris, and Joan Allen as Elizabeth Proctor. Much of the filming took place on Choate Island in Essex, Massachusetts.
Arthur Miller was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay and Joan Allen received a nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
Early morning in 1692 Salem, Massachusetts, some young village girls meet in the woods with a Barbadian slave named Tituba (Charlayne Woodard). One of the girls, Abigail Williams (Winona Ryder), kills a chicken and drinks the blood, wishing for John Proctor's wife to die. They are surprised by Abigail's uncle, Reverend Samuel Parris (Bruce Davison), who discovers them. As the girls run away, Parris' daughter Betty (Rachael Bella) falls over unconscious.

Williamstheatre presents THE CRUCIBLE by Arthur Miller. Directed by Omar Sangare. Once emblematic of political persecution in the 1950s, THE CRUCIBLE is an allegory that resonates wherever sanctimony is used as a weapon of oppression and intolerance. In this canonical American drama set during the seventeenth-century Salem witch trials, Arthur Miller explores human cruelty and the manipulations, accusations, and dishonesty that afflict a paranoid community looking for scapegoats. Though the apple's still in her fist
She swears it shouldn't have to be like this
She is now strung up, and strung out from wherever you look
It doesn't much matter now, how much she took
Where are you now?
Where are you now?
When your kingdoms have crumbled down,
Where are you now?
I live in a house of pain and lust
Before the glory and after the rust
Some of it's yours and some of it's mine
If I could just love you enough, maybe I could let it lie
Where are you now?
Where are you now?
When your kingdoms have crumbled down,
When your kingdoms have crumbled down,
Where are you now?
Your falling worth and your falling tears
Have left you stranded there in the garden of your fears
Sweet redemption rings in the air
Sweet redemption will hold you there
Where are you now? (I am calling you by name)
Where are you now? (Come to me and leave your shame)
Though your kingdoms have crumbled down (3x)
Sweet redemption (6x)
Where are you now?
Where are you now?
