Nadia Murad Basee Taha (Arabic: نادية مراد) is a Yazidi rights activist who was kidnapped and held by the Islamic State in August 2014. On 5 January 2016, the Iraqi government nominated her for the 2016 Nobel Peace Prize for her activism. A Norwegian lawmaker seconded the nomination.
Nadia is a female name that means 'hope', used predominantly in Italy, Spain, Greece, Romania, France, Russia, Portugal, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Serbia, Slovenia, Croatia, Macedonia, Ukraine, Bulgaria and some countries in the Middle East, such as Lebanon, Palestine, Jordan, Morocco, Algeria, Persia and Oman. Its origins are in the Slavic and Ancient Greek languages. Variations include: Nadja, Nadya, Nadine, Nadiya, Nadiyya, Nadija and Nadiyeh .
In the case of the Slavic languages, the name Nadia is the word for "hope" in most of South Slavic languages, Nadiya (Надія, accent on the "i") is the Ukrainian word for "hope", while Nadzeya (Надзея, accent on the "e") is the equivalent in Belarusian, or Old Polish Nadzieja all of them derived from Old East Slavic. In Bulgarian and Russian, on the other hand, Nadia or Nadya (Надя, accent on first syllable) is the diminutive form of the full name Nadyezhda (Надежда), which also means "hope" and derives from Old Church Slavonic, it in turn, being a translation of the Greek word ελπίς (Elpis), with the same meaning.
Murad (Arabic: مراد) or variants Murat, Mourad, Morad and Mrad is an Arabic, Azerbaijani, Turkish, Kurdish,Persian and Armenian male given name and is commonly used throughout the Muslim world and Arabic world.
Murad means "desired" or "wished" in Arabic. It is derived from the Arabic quadriliteral root "Arad" meaning to desire.
The name Murad stems from the Persian word "morad", which means "fulfilment of a vow vowed" or simply wish'.
Islamic state is a type of government based on Islamic religious law (sharia).

A goodwill ambassador is a person who advocates for a specific cause (e.g. a country or an organisation) on the basis of their notability. Goodwill ambassadors generally deliver goodwill or promote ideals from one entity to another, or to a population. The term should be distinguished from the related concept of a brand ambassador, who plays a role in promoting a company or product through personal interaction.
A goodwill ambassador may be an individual from one country who resides in or travels to another country, in a diplomatic mission (or international friendship mission) at a peer to peer level; that is: country to country, state to state, city to city; or, as an intermediary representing the people at the other extreme of an organization.
Goodwill ambassadors have been an official (or unofficial) part of governments and cultures for as long as diplomacy has existed; to exchange gifts and presents; humanitarian relief; or development aid, using well-known celebrities, scientists, authors, known activists, and other high society figures. Goodwill missions of countries are usually carried out or overseen by the head of state, and do not necessarily involve diplomatic credentials beyond a letter of presentation (or letter of credence). However, some states, such as Haiti, do issue credentials that include diplomatic immunity for goodwill ambassadors.
Channel 4 News’ Kylie Morris talks to one of Britain's leading human rights lawyers, Amal Clooney, who has spoken out against the UN for not doing enough to stop the genocide of the Yazidi people. She has called for justice for the Yazidi women and girls that have been raped, enslaved and traded by Islamic State fighters. She's working alongside a champion of the Yazidi people and survivor of Islamic State violence - who yesterday opened the General Assembly - Nadia Murad.
When militants from so-called Islamic State entered Nadia's village, they killed all the men; six of her brothers were murdered. She and hundreds of other Yazidi women were taken captive and, in the months that followed, they were passed from one group of men to another and gang raped. She managed to escape, but it is thought that thousands of women are still being held captive. Nadia Murad is here in London campaigning to try to get the world to notice and do something
