In this video, my good buddy Joe Talentino and I examine the differences between Merlot and Cabernet wines.
Of course they’re the two most popular red wines in America, but many people don’t know what makes each of them different and unique, or why you might prefer one to the other, so we’re here to help.
Sure both of these wines are great with food, especially meat, but each has its own set of characteristics, and it’s these differences which actually make the wines perfect for blending together, as is done when making wine in the Bordeaux region...because when combined their individual traits support one another in a really delicious way.

Bienvenidos al episodio número 7 de este curso sobre vinos. El episodio anterior comenzamos con las 3 principales uvas tintas, y esta vez seguiremos hablando de ellas, toca el turno a la uva Merlot.
Esta es una de las uvas clásicas de la famosa región de Burdeos en Francia, pero su popularidad y aceptación no es tan amplia, y entre los considerados "consumidores de vino serios", la Merlot nunca ha sido una favorita.
Ya en el episodio 6 hablamos de la película "Entre copas" (Sideways), y vimos que elevó un poco las ventas de la uva Pinot Noir; pues bien, esta cinta, también contribuyó a generar un ligero descenso en las ventas de Merlot, por desdeñarla en pantalla. Pero cuando el Merlot se elabora bien, puede ser un vino magnífico; por ejemplo, uno de los vinos más codiciados y preciados del mundo, el Chateau Petrus, se elebora justamente con esta uva; así que, traigamos a la Merlot de vuelta y démosle su debida importancia; al menos, la oportunidad de probarla.
Y como dato extra, en este episodio hablamos sobre la Filoxera, qué es, y cómo ha afectado al mundo del vino a través de la historia.

Merlot
Merlot is a dark blue-colored wine grape variety, that is used as both a blending grape and for varietal wines. The name Merlot is thought to be a diminutive of merle, the French name for the blackbird, probably a reference to the color of the grape. Its softness and "fleshiness", combined with its earlier ripening, makes Merlot a popular grape for blending with the sterner, later-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon, which tends to be higher in tannin.
Along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, Merlot is one of the primary grapes used in Bordeaux wine, and it is the most widely planted grape in the Bordeaux wine regions. Merlot is also one of the most popular red wine varietals in many markets. This flexibility has helped to make it one of the world's most planted grape varieties. As of 2004, Merlot was estimated to be the third most grown variety at 260,000 hectares (640,000 acres) globally, with an increasing trend. This puts Merlot just behind Cabernet Sauvignon's 262,000 hectares (650,000 acres).
