Otago (/əˈtɑːɡoʊ, oʊ-, ɒ-/;New Zealand [əˈtɐːɡɐʉ̯]) is a region of New Zealand in the south of the South Island administered by the Otago Regional Council. It has an area of approximately 32,000 square kilometres (12,000 sq mi), making it the country's third largest local government region. Its population was 215,100 in the June 2015 estimate.
The name "Otago" is an old southern Maori word whose North Island dialect equivalent is "Otakou", introduced to the south by Europeans in the 1840s. The exact meaning of the term is disputed, with common translations being "isolated village" and "place of red earth", the latter referring to the reddish-ochre clay which is common in the area around Dunedin. "Otago" is also the old name of the European settlement on the Otago Harbour, established by the Weller Brothers in 1831, which lies close to the modern harbourside community of Otakou. The place later became the focus of the Otago Association, an offshoot of the Free Church of Scotland, notable for its high-minded adoption of the principle that ordinary people, not the landowner, should choose the ministers.
Determined defensive effort earns Otago a home Championship final with frantic finish against Bay of Plenty. For more coverage, head to http://www.mitre10cup.co.nz FOLLOW US ON SOCIAL: http://www.facebook.com/Mitre10Cup http://www.twitter.com/Mitre10Cup http://www.instagram.com/Mitre10.Cup

Kayaking? Yes, you can. Cycling? Yes, you can. Tramping? Yes, you can. Sightseeing? Yes, you can. Central Otago has a lot to offer to it's visitors but unfortunately it's missed by most who come to New Zealand. This magnificent place is for the winter lovers, summer sport junkies or just for who wish a cold beer at a nice and historic pub. So much to do, so much to see. So much I love this place.

While Tauranga, Napier-Hastings and Hamilton have eclipsed the city in population in recent years to make it only the seventh largest city in New Zealand, Dunedin is still considered to be one of the four main cities of New Zealand for historic, cultural, and geographic reasons. Dunedin was the largest city by territorial land area until superseded by Auckland on the creation of the Auckland Council in November 2010. Dunedin was the largest city in New Zealand by population until about 1900. The city population at 5 Ma...
New Zealand's most inland region is a landscape of vast, open terrain and alpine scenery. The ambience of the area is defined by many things: the exciting change in seasons; the tranquillity that comes with having only 11,000 inhabitants; a rich, gold mining heritage; and contemporary, award-winning wines. To unwind and relax in Central Otago is not hard. You could cycle a section of the Otago Central Rail Trail; tour a vineyard; play a round of golf; or visit an historic, gold mining town and learn about Otago's equally-prosperous past.
