MAD SOCIETY- s/t 7″EP (Hit & Run Records, USA, 1981)

MadSociety_frontMadSociety_backMadSociety_vinylaMadSociety_vinylbSpeaking of good bad music: Imagine a bunch of (pre)-pubertal kids dressing up, sneaking into their older brothers Hardcore band practice room and start imitating what they just heard. That’s more or less what you get here, including songs about Riot Squads and Napalm.
MAD SOCIETY too came from L.A., just like SIN 34. This EP and some tracks on “You can’t argue with success” is about what they left behind. I mean, it’s not really a record you’d flip out over, but as a document of time and a curiosity it’s really neat.Check the credits on the back side and the dedication to Tom Waits, Jello Biafra and (in capitals) Rodney Bingenheimer. Who was really behind this kids?
As cute as this is, it’s also quite bizarre. Who can tell us more about this band and its history?

This EP doesn’t show up too often, so enjoy the probably youngest Hardcore band ever. Found this in a thrift store in NJ in summer of 1986. Played it maybe 10 times in all these years.

just when you think you heard it all you’re pulling the next obscure record out. interesting because it’s so early. the child singer is incredible. will have to play this to my kids.

Well known band and record in Los Angeles. Darby brought the Adam & The Ants look back from England, and the pics of MS here were in that very short period between when Darby came back, and before everyone realized the Ants were uncool new wave, not punk. I think I remember that kid dating the young girl from Unit 3 Plus Venus. I found that if you take the tunes into Cool Edit and pitch shift the kids voice lower, they become far more listenable!

  3. Been digging it since 7inchpunk posted it years ago. Sure it’s not a record you play over and over but it’s FUN! Wonder if the singer was inspired by Darbys new look after his homecoming from the UK or if it was by actually seeing Adam Ant. This record now turns up pretty often on eBay and you can find it cheap. Well worth a couple of bucks :).

  4. Thanks for the insight, Fred – much appreciated!
Been checking popsike for it, Peter, but couldn’t find one. But as it appears, there is one on ebay right now!

  5. The reason why it doesn’t show up on popsike is cause it doesn’t go high enough. There’s two on eBay right now.

in the days before ebay and internet this used to be pretty good trade material. rumor goes a box of 7″s turned up a few years ago. since then it’s more common to find.

I love this 7″. the vocals are great in their own way.

  7. The kid teaches yoga to celebrities now, check him out: “http://www.yogas.com/images/stevensmiley.jpg”

    Renee Zellweger says…
“I started practicing Yoga in Los Angeles with Steven Earth Metz because I heard he was a really great Yoga Teacher, I stayed with him because it is true.”

“I ask for Steven Earth Metz whenever I am in Los Angeles because he is the best!” Penelope Cruz

This is 1000 times better than SIN 34 . At least they were 9 years old kids… Kinda psychedelic, but cool! 😉

I love when blogs put out the call for information and people follow through. Yoga instructor to the stars, that’s just crazy.

I had this record when it first came out and I still like it today, quite a bit in fact.I would say it has stood the test of time.Never liked Sin 34.San Diego, where I am from had it’s own kid punk band in the Skullbusters,my old friend Paul Lima was the singer when he was about 9 or 10 years old.If you would like to hear some San Diego punk rock from 80-82 go to the che underground and search for the “our blowout” cassette compilation. Thanks for posting this.
