!Antifascista ruso detenido en Madrid! - Russian writer and antifascist Pjotr Silajev is still arrested in Madrid -

Spanish below

Russian writer and antifascist Pjotr Silajev is still arrested in Madrid

Silajev had been granted a political asylum in Finland early this year.
The Finnish embassy in Madrid has said that Silajev can be kept arrested
for 40 days! The Spanish police arrested Silajev in Granada because of
request from Interpol on the 21st of august. Contrary to the
expectations, he was not released in a trial in Madrid on the 22nd of
august, even though the Finnish embassy had provided all the papers
concerning his asylum and right to stay in the country. The court
wouldnt comment the case. The Spanish police said that he only had a
Russian passport when he was arrested. It is not clear how the Finnish
state will react to the arrest.

The Moscow Times interviewed Tanya Lokshina from The Human Rights
Watch, who said that the Spanish state does not have to take into
concideration the asylum from Finland and are free to send him back to
Russia. This does not seem possible. The Finnish YLE news has
interviewed the head of the immigration office Esko Repo who said that
all the European Union countries are committed to not sending people to
countries where they might face prosecution.

The lawyer of Silajev said the situation looks bad.

The Moscow Times said that the hardening line of the Russian government
towards protests can lead to even more cases where people need to flee
the country. The case of Silajev can be connected to other cases where
people who had fled the country have been tried to be sent back.

Silajev was granted asylum from Finland in april of this year. The
reason was the continuing political prosecution in Russia. The Russian
Federation wants him convicted for demonstrations against a highway in
the Khimki region outside Moscow. Among other protests, the house of the
city council was attacked and some people throw stones and fireworks in
the building in 2010.

The hunt of Silajev seems to be the last resort for the prosecutor to
convict someone from the Khimki protests. Last year Aleksey Gaskarov,
who was arrested for months, was releassed of all charges and Maxim
Solopov received a two year sentence for hooliganism. The third suspect
Denis Solopov has received an asylum from the Netherlands.

The Moscow Times have said that the mayor of Khimki Vladimir
Strelchenko resigned last week because of pressure from the new governor
of Moscow. Strelchenko is suspected of organising attacks against the
protesters who were resisting the building of the highway.

We are asking for solidarity from our comrades in Madrid and other
parts of the Spanish state! Support our anarchist and antifascist comrade!

Spread the word!

The Moscow Times entrevistó a Tanya Lokshina de The Human Rights Watch,

Russian Anti-fascists are facing charges for making a movie

Aug. 20, 2012 Avtonom
(This is a partial English translation of a program, aired in Dozhd TV channel 17th of August, which is embedded below.)

Center of Counteraction Against Extremism ("E-Center") in the city of Vladimir did not liked amateur movie "Russian anti-racist skinheads", and they opened a criminal case against makers of the film. According to them, film incited hatred against "social group of skinheads and nationalists".
Ilya Vasyunin: Movie was first screened one year ago. I was in one of the secret screenings in Moscow. It is dangerous to publicly screen such movies, as such an event may be attacked by "social group of nationalists".

Film includes cuts from concerts of anti-fascist bands and interviews of such bands, from Russia and other countries of former Soviet Union.

Author visited several cities and screened the film, and in one of these cities, in Vladimir, he was detained. This happened one week ago, and soon he learned, that a criminal case has been opened against him.

Andrei Ivanov, author of the film: I came to the city of Vladimir, and I was arrested by E-Center officials. First they made drug tests, which did not revealed anything, alcometer also showed zero intoxication. I was detained and I spent in a police station all night, next day I was transferred to prosecution administration of the Vladimir region.

Movie does not include any calls - its purpose is just to show existence of such a subculture.

Sidorkina, lawyer of Ivanov: According to the prosecution, "Ivanov on purpose, with a goal of inciting hate or animosity according to membership in a social group of "skinheads", with nationalistic ideas, made a public movie screening of video "Russian anti-racist skinheads". Currently in all major cities, such as Nizhni Novgorod and Moscow, criminal cases are opened against Antifa.

Ilya Vasunin: This is not the first time, when statute 282 of the Russian criminal codex ("inciting hate against a group") is used against anti-
fascists. But this far no anti-fascists have been sentenced according to the statute, so it remains to be seen, how the case will stand on court.

Two anti-fascists remanded 4th of July, after an incident at club "Barrikada" in Moscow

July 17, 2012 Avtonom
4th of July, at Presnenski district court of Moscow, judge Dmitry Dolgopolov fulfilled request of the police to imprison two of the six anti-fascists, who were remanded in night of second of July, not far from club "Barrikada". 23 year old Irina Lipskaya and 19 year old Andrey Molchanov, suspected of having committed crimes according to statute of Russian criminal codex 213 part 2 (hooliganism, committed with a group of people). They will be held in remand prison at least until 2nd of September. According to police, anarchists and anti-fascists attacked guests of a Nazi concert with rubber bullets and flares.

According to arrested themselves, six anti-fascists were travelling by Zvenigorskoye highway in Moscow. They stopped car not so far from club "Barrikada", in order to smoke. Guests of the fascist concert attacked their car with rubber bullets, damage from which is still visible in car. Anti-fascists jumped to car and attempted to drive away, but were arrested after few seconds by SOBR special forces of the police.

During arrest, they were beaten up, and beatings continued in the police station of Presnenski district. According to arrested, police used psychological pressure to have nationalists to testify against Irina Lipskaya and Andrey Molchanov.

Irina did not even left car at the club. Prosecution attempted to have two others from the six remanded, but as nationalists did not testified against them, they were released. But as they are suspects, most likely they will not be allowed to leave city. Another two arrested were released immediately with travelling restrictions, as they are underage.

It is obvious, that this is a political case against anti-fascists. As SOBR special forces were on the spot, anti-fascists were under police surveillance in prior to arrest, and police was determined to set a trap. This is not the only political case against anti-fascists in Moscow - besides Irina and Andrey, three more anti-fascists are currently detained in Moscow - Alexey Sutuga, Alexey Olesinov and Igor Kharchenko.

We are gathering money for legal costs of the arrested anti-fascists. If you want to participate to fundraising effort, please read instructions at http://wiki.avtonom.org/en/index.php/Donate

Write letters to anarchist and anti-fascist prisoners of Moscow!

June 13, 2012 Libcom.org

Kharchenko Igor Olegovich
FKU SIZO-2 UFSIN Rossii po g. Moskve
ul. Novoslobodskaya d. 45
127055 Moskva Russia

Igor was arrested in September 2011. He is accused of having
participated in a fight on the 4th of July 2010, during which the
audience of a punk hardcore concert dispersed a band of nationalists,
who had come in order to kill and maim concert guests. Igor, however,
did not take part in the fight - plenty of those present at the concert
have given testimony, that during the fight Igor was performing in the
concert. The whole case against Igor relies exclusively
on the testimony of failed "race warriors", V. Sumin and V. Zhidousouv.
The true reason for the arrest of Kharchenko is an attempt by Moscow
investigators to take revenge on their failure to jail anyone for the
action by anti-fascists against the Khimki city administration on the
28th of July 2010. Igor's co-accused is one of the "Khimki hostages",
who has received refugee status in Western Europe after UNCHR
recognised, that the police investigation on the Khimki case was carried
out with various violations, for example confessions gained through use
of torture. Moscow investigators ignored the fact, that during this
fight Solopov was in Turkey, which is confirmed by the stamps in his
passport, and plenty of eye-witnesses.

The investigation also attempts to indict Kharchenko for "organising of
an extremist community," according to statute 282.1 of the Russian
criminal codex.

Sutuga Alexey Vladimirovich
FKU SIZO-2 UFSIN Rossii po g. Moskve
ul. Novoslobodskaya d. 45
127055 Moskva Russia

Alexey Sutuga has been a member of Autonomous Action since the early
2000s. He was first active in Irkutsk and then in Moscow. He
participated in every single major campaign of the anarchist movement in
the past ten years, and supported the journal Avtonom. In 2007, he
joined the ecological protest camp against uranium enrichment in city of
Angarsk in Siberia, which was assaulted by nationalists in the early
morning hours. Ilya Borodaenko from Nahodka of Pacific Ocean was
murdered there, and a number of other visitors of the camp were
seriously wounded.

Alexey was arrested on the evening of 17th of April, and has been in
remand prison since then. He, together with Alexey Olesinov, is accused
of having taken part in an incident in the Moscow club "Vozdukh", where
on 17th of December, during a punk-hardcore concert, a conflict between
the audience and the security took place. The club security, consisted
of supporters of the far right, and were provoking guests. Due to the
conflict, the concert was stopped prematurely, but the security
attempted to take some guests hostage, threatening them with punishment
from their friends - nationalist football hooligans. Concert guests
resisted, the security opened fire with rubber coated metal bullets, but
soon the concert-goers gained the upper hand and the security was
neutralised and sent to the hospital.

Join common days of action for Alexey Sutuga, Alexey Olesinov and all repressed anti-fascists

May 25, 2012 Avtonom
In spring of 2012, anti-fascist movement of Russia has been targeted with new repressions. An excuse for the repressions was an incident in Moscow club "Vozdukh", where 17th of December, during a punk-hardcore concert, a conflict between public and the security took place. Security of the club consisted of supporters of the far right, and were provoking guests. Due to conflict, concert was got halted prematurely, but the security attempted to take some guests as hostages, promising them punishment from their friends - nationalistic football hooligans. Visitors of the concert resisted, the security opened fire with rubber coated metal bullets, but soon guests of the concert gained upper hand and the security was neutralised.

Alexey Olesinov was arrested 12th of February in Sankt-Petersburg. Alexey Sutuga was arrested in evening of 17th of April in Moscow. Currently, both of them are in a remand prison in Moscow.

But incident in club "Vozdukh" is just an excuse for yet another attempt to destroy anti-fascist movement in Moscow, and in Russia in general. Authorities of the Russian federation are not in a condition to stop nationalists - they are either ignoring the threat alltogether, or attempt to set up "a controllable nationalist movement", but in the end these attempts just becoming subsidies of the far right from the state - let us keep in mind the close cooperation between pro-Kremlin youth organisations and "Russkiy Obraz", which in turn was connected to armed Nazi underground organisation of Yevgeniya Khasis and Nikita Tihonov. But state is harshly intervening against any civic initiatives, which attempt to fight against nationalists using direct action.

Goal of the most recent operation of the authorities is to neutralise most known and most active anti-fascists of Moscow. Both activists have been in anti-fascist movement for a decade already. Olesinov was already once jailed with bogus charges - in November of year 2008 he was arrested, allegedly for a fight with security in club "Kult" in August of that year. Immediately after that incident, Olesinov was arrested, but released without any charges, as he was not committing even a misdemeanor and club security had no any demands. However, prosecutor demanded 5 years prison sentence on basis of Second part of Statute 213 of Russian criminal codex ("Hooliganism"), but thanks to a wide protest campaign and a number of protests both in Russia and abroad, eventually he was only jailed for a year. But this prison sentence damaged his health for good, and after new arrest in February, he has had continuous health problems. He was diagnosed an early form of tuberculosis, apparently contracted during his previous prison term, but he is not provided a proper medical care.

Remand court of Olesinov involved outrageous violations - prosecutor claims that he was hiding from the officials, and provided judge a warrant not to leave Moscow with a falsified signature, dated to beginning of the February. But there is no way Olesinov could have signed such a paper in Moscow, since he was continuously staying in St. Petersburg since December.

Alexey Sutuga is a member of Autonomous Action since early years of 2000s, he was first active in Irkutsk and then in Moscow. He participated to every single major campaign of anarchist movement during the last ten years, and supported journal Avtonom. In 2007, he joined ecological protest camp against uranium enrichment in city of Angarsk in Siberia, which was assaulted by nationalists in the early morning hours. Ilya Borodaenko from Nahodka of Pacific Ocean was murdered, and a number of other visitors of the camp were seriously wounded.

We should not let state to attack anti-fascist movement yet another time! We call everyoen to join
common days of actions for Alexey Sutuga, Alexey Olesinov and all repressed antifascists from 10th to 17th of July - during these days, new court decision on continuation of remand imprisonment will be made in Moscow.

Any kind of actions are welcome - marches, pickets, wheatpasting, graffiti, writing of protest letters and so on - choose whichever methods are the most actual where you live. But do not forget to contact s in prior, so that we could list you among the participating cities!

If you want to participate, write to info@avtonom.org, or call or send sms to Moscow group of Autonomous Action: +7-985-247-20-65

Far right arson against DIY bar in Yerevan, Armenia

May 20, 2012 Avtonom

8th of May, 5:30 AM two neo-Nazi brothers, Ambik and Arame attacked club "D.I.Y" in Yerevan. They broke window of the door and threw bottles filled with flammable mixture. At first, fire brigade which arrived in minutes claimed fire was due to a short circuit, but CCTV camera of a shop next door fixed how a bald young man in a bomber jacket and combat boots with white shoelaces committed the attack.

9th of May 4:30 PM two Nazis were arrested, but they were soon released with a bail of one million dram (around 80 000 euros). Money for bail was donated by deputies of nationalist ARF (Dashnaktsyutyun) party (ironically, co-formed by anarchists 121 years ago), Artsvik Minasyan and Grayr Karapetyan. Now police is ignorant towards the investigation.

A bit about the club

D.I.Y. club is an unique phenomena in Armenia. It has small but comfortable premises, and is owned by Tsomak, who is singer of punk band Pintset, and her friend, human rights activist Lalu Aslikyan. Aslikyan told to Epress.am, that on Thursday around 5 PM, a group of four or five persons came to burned down club which is currently being repaired, and spat on her and threatened her not to reopen bar, and promised to burn it again in case it is reopened.

In social networks, supporters of the arsonist are accusing hosts of the bar for "propaganda of homosexuality", "destruction of Armenian identity" and "threatening national security", but all of this is a lie. Tsomak and her supporters are being threatened . There are groups in social networks with photos of Tsomak and her friends, with calls to "destroy and burn ones like them".

Deputy Minasyan, who bailed out the accused, told in an interview to Panorama.am website, that he is personally familiar with the young arsonists. "I consider them as normal guys, and police still has to find out to which extent they are a threat to society". To question if deputy has some position in regards to sexual minorities, he answered "For sure I have, but I would not like that to be the main argument against (the pub). In this case, I am certain that these young guys acted right - in context of our national ideology. It is another issue that damages they caused should be compensated.

Owner of the bar told journalists, that a group of 30-40 nationalists, to which suspected brothers belong, was threatening her since pub was opened in spring of 2011. Tsomak also refused clams, that D.I.Y. is a gay club - "We have different kinds of guests. I do not plan to put a gender detector or whatever on the door. Nobody has a right to infringe ones private life, and I do not plan to do that either".

In a press conference, writer Violet Grigoriyan condemned the attac. "Armenian people should be tolerant, because we were victims of a genocide just because we differ from Turkish. With this approach, they could go and burn home-museum of Sergey Paradzhanov, where homosexual art is exhibited. Our society should not accept a position, which refuses existence of other people.

Anarchist Alexey Sutuga was arrested and remanded in Moscow - help needed

April 21, 2012 Avtonom

Alexey Sutuga, anarchist, anti-fascist and the member of  "Autonomous Action"  was arrested on Tuesday evening, April 17, in Moscow. It happened during fundraising effort in support of anti-fascists prisoners. It became aware almost after a day after arrest that Alexey is now in the remand prison number two which is also known as "Butyrka".

The police accuse him of the same charges as anti-fascist Alexey Olesinov who has already been in custody for a month - complicity in the incident at the Moscow club "Vozdukh", on 17 December, 2011, when the Nazis working for the security attacked the guests of the concert and then blamed anti-fascists in this assault.

Voluntary donations for the support of anti-fascists in detention, particularly of Alexey Olesinov and Igor Kharchenko, were gathered in the center of Moscow, on April 17. The event was organized by activists of the anti-racist human rights initiative "Direct Help". About 15 people, including Alexey Sutuga, showed up. Two police officers came up to the group at 20.30, according to witnesses. They identified themselves and asked why there were too much garbage around the bench.

After that the police began to ask all who was there at that time to show the documents. When people refused to show them, two plain clothes officials appeared instantly, out of nowhere and then about 5-6 of their colleagues showed up. One of them showed his card, muttered something like "the criminal investigation Department, guys", and said "get him!". Police officers obeyed him, took Alexey and led him off to the direction of highway.

At the same moment all the people in plain clothes followed them, no longer pay any attention to the rest of the crowd, although they had promised to arrest all those who have no documents to the police station. Among those who arrested Alexey, there was a well-known Moscow FBI agent Evgeny Platov, better known as "Zhenya the FSB" (more about him and his pursuit of the Moscow anarchists you can read here: http://avtonom.org/news/feisy-vs-anarkhisty-kak-boitsy-nevidimogo-foront... - in Russian language)

It's worth noting that a group of anarchists, including Alexey, had been detained a week earlier by the same plain clothes officers, but they were released without any charges.

Sutuga's family and friends didn't know about his whereabouts for almost 24 hours. He didn't answer the phone. The information about his whereabouts was only released in the evening, April 18. It was reported that he is in "Butyrka" and, apparently, Basmanny district court quickly sanctioned pre-trial detention of the anti-fascists.

He is charged with "hooliganism" (Article 213, Part 2 of the Russian Criminal Code). The press service of the Moscow police reported that Alexey Sutuga is charged in connection with the same case as Alexey Olesinov.

Recently it became aware of an attempt of fabricating a second criminal case on Olesinov: on April 17 police presented him a a young man who claims to have been attacked by Alexey on December 4th, 2011, though at this day Olesinov was posting articles on the Internet. (for more details: http://ru.indymedia.org/newswire/display/26512/index.php - in Russian).

"The case against the well-known anti-fascist Alexey Olesinov, now remanded, has been investigated for several months and is now collapsing. It seems like the human rights campaign in support of Olesinov began to irritate the police. If they had something against Sutuga, then they would have followed the legal procedures for this case. And it turns out that they have just arrested a person and kept him almost a whole day incommunicado. It looks like the policemen have a rich imagination"- commented a participant of " Autonomous Action".

Benefit event in Lund to support antifascists from Nizhniy Novgorod

March 10, 2012 Avtonom

9th of March there was a benefit evening in Lund, a student city located in Southern Sweden. One of the topics of the event was repressions against antifascists from Nizhniy Novgorod.

An antifascist made a speech about the situation with the “Center against Extremism” in Russia, as well as about why it’s so important to support social activist in Russia.

The members of "Fara" organization also did a lesson about “how to support activists who have suffered from psychological trauma at demonstrations”. After that a movie called “The Terrorists” was showed. It’s a documentary movie about riots in Gothenburg in 2001, shown from the protesters point of view.

Activists from the social center arranged vegetarian food and non-alcoholic drinks.

All money collected at the event will be used to cover the costs of the repressed antifascist’s lawyer.

Thanks to the “Solidarity Group Lund” for organizing the event and supporting comrades from Russia.

Remember that from 16th to 18th of March there will be international days of solidarity with antifascists from Nizhniy Novgorod.

More information about that can be found here

Incident on the dancefloor – pre-history of the arrest of Alexey Olesinov

Feb. 27, 2012 Avtonom

13th of February, a known Moscow anti-fascist Alexey Olesinov was arrested in St. Petersburg with charges of “hooliganism”, related to incident in Moscow club “Vozdukh” 17th of December.

The following statement on the event was published by anonymous participant of the anti-fascist initiative “Direct help” already 19th of December, but considering arrest of Olesinov, we consider necessary to pick up the topic again.Alexey had not anything to do with this fight, but it is now used as a pretext to imprison him. It is obvious, that “Anti-extremist center” and FSB are now revenging the fact, that they could not jail him for a longer time back in 2009, when he was framed up last time. It is obvious, that real reason why officials are after him, are the anti-fascist activities of Olesinov during last decade.

Old version of our website is currently unavailable, but some background information on the court case of 2009 is available here: Fresh news on topic will be available with tag.

Story of the events in club “Vozdukh” is useful not only in order to once again see, how much official version may differ from real events, but also to demonstrate to all owners of Moscow clubs, how short-sighted it is to employ people with far-right views to security, as they have a tendency to provoke visitors, which will eventually lead to property destruction and other trouble.

Currently, Aleksei is remanded, and next time court will decide on continuation of imprisonment in prior to court 18th of March. You may donate to legal costs of Olesinov through Anarchist Black Cross of Moscow, more details on how to do this are available here: http://wiki.avtonom.org/en/index.php/Donate

Rage of subculture (first-hand account of a participator of “Direct Help” on events in club “Vozdukh”).

On Saturday 17th of December, I became an unwilling witness of incident, to which disappointed audience of the festival “East Beat Fest” took part in club “Vozdukh”, which is located at “Nizhni Susalny” side-street of Moscow. I came there to relax in a friendly atmosphere, and to listen my favorite bands.

In middle of the concert, two new persons came to work for the security – during first part of the concert, security was done by two older guys with t-shirt “security” in a shift. Visitors of the club and participators of the concert immediately paid attention to new security, as they were provoking visitors. They were demonstratively wearing “travmat”-pistols (a popular Russian self-defence weapon, which shots rubber-coated metal bullets), another hand had a tattoo with tsarist black-golden-white flag, and letters CSKA. Guys immediately admitted, that they are “listeners of patriotic rap”, and in their youth they did “trashed some blacks”. Their work consisted of gathering bottles of mineral water from and random harrassment of guests of the concert, the same time they attempted to annoy organisers by bragging that they were ultra-right football hooligans, and members of such notable hooligan firms as “Yaroslavka” and “Gallant Steeds”.

After a number of verbal conflicts with spectators, new security started to complain, that people are going in and out with weapons – this although nobody refused from being searched, and security could not find any weapons during searches. Meanwhile, concert went on, and when headliners, Engage At Will from St. Petersburg and unsubs from Kirov were supposed to perform, a fight between two spectators took place in second floor of the premises. Four persons from the security immediately ran to second floor, where they found two participators and their friends, who were currently negotiating in order to resolve the conflict peacefully. Security grabbed first person they saw, and attempted to push him down the stairs. His friends stepped up to defend him, and did not let him be pushed down the stairs.

After a long and heated debate, security withdraw, promising to solve issues with spectators in the street. They went to complain to art-director of the club, claiming that in second floor “everything was smashed”. Art-director decided to halt concert prematurely. Band members attempted to negotiate, as it was mere half hours of remaining showtime, but director threatened them with police. Organisers promised, that they would be ready to negotiate with police as well, but managers of the club asked everyone to disperse, and organisers to gather their sound system. Organisers agreed, and started to disassemble sound system. I did not witnessed what happened next, but I heard this from my punk acquintances, who helped with disassembling the sound system.

They told that security did not let some of the people to the street, promising that soon their “directors”, “mafia” and “Yaroslavka” will come, and that they will settle their disagreements with organisers of the concert. At that point, organisers had already left the premises with part of the sound system. People, whom security attempted to hold as hostages, refused to stay and wait for whatever there was to come, and headed towards exit. At this point, security grabbed his “travmat” and started to shoot at the crowd. This resulted a stampede at the exit, as people panicked after the shot, some windows got broken either due to stampede or due to shooting. How one of the armed securty personell got beaten up (and according to mainstream media, also shot with “travmat” gun and stabbed” - editorial collective of avtonom.org), is unclear.

But it is obvious, that conflict was provoked by security, or as they now claim in the media, “administrators” of the club. And they were the ones who escalated the conflict, by grabbing their guns and shooting at the people. Now wounded security promises to “give any kind of testimony”, in order to save their arses. And they accuse anti-fascists for escalation of the violence. Obviously, that such people feel that any subcultures pose a threat to them, as nobody will never accept the ridiculous ideas, with which security of the concert associates itself. As for the administrators of the clubs, we recommend them to pick up their cadres more carefully, and also to take account wishes of the organisers of the concerts, and also to follow conditions of the contract until end of the concert, otherwise their profits will disappear as smoke to the air due after a reaction of discontent public.

Anarchist anti-fascist murdered in Samara, Russia - friends and family need support!

Feb. 21, 2012 Avtonom

On the 9th of February, at 6:30 in the morning in the area of the institute "FIAN" (in Samara) a janitor found the body of Nikita Kalin, born in 1991. At 8:00am police arrived on the scene, and at 11:00am police contacted the mother of the victim. According to his mother, Nikita was stabbed 61 times, besides this, his ribs were fractured multiple times, and his head was wounded as well. No property was stolen. Currently there is one murder suspect under arrest.
Nikita's blood was found on the clothes of the arrested suspect.

It is obvious, that Nikita was attacked by a group, and police also told his mother off the record, that the detained suspect is a national socialist activist, and refuses to name any accomplices. Besides the brutality of the murder, the investigation has still not questioned Nikita's mother, or his friend who was the last person who saw him. Due to this, we suppose that there will be an attempt to cover up the case, as it often hapens in Russia. However, the suspect has already hired a lawyer.

We suspect, that the investigation is working in the interest of the arrested, and thus support is necessary. At this point, a human rights organisation has provided a lawyer, but funds are still needed for funeral costs.

Nikita was from a simple working class family, and never hid his anti-fascist and anarchist views.

In case you want to help the friends and family of Nikita with funeral costs, you can donate to Anarchist Black Cross of Moscow:

All Nine Antifascists Acquitted In Second Welling Trial! (UK)

From Leeds Anarchist Black Cross:

When confronted by a swaggering neo-Nazi at Welling train station in March
2009, Sean Cregan did what any good antifascist would, he put the Nazi on
his arse! While twice Sean’s size, one punch was enough for the scumbag
fascist, who dropped to the ground as if pole-axed. His neo-Nazi companion
quickly fled down the station platform, with Sean in hot pursuit.

The two scumbags had been on their way to a so-called “Blood and Honour”
gig, which are regularly held at the nearby Duchess of Edinburgh pub (with
the active participation of the fascist landlord with whom the two were to
stay). When questioned by police later, the first fascist gave his name as
Patrick O’Donovan (this may be a false name since he is German and came
over specifically for the gig, which are illegal in Germany). His brave
companion gave his name as Michael Heihl.

There had been several unrelated incidents at Welling Station that
evening, and the police arrived quickly, arresting several antifascists
who were also at the station (or in the vicinity). Some months later, dawn
raids took place around the country, with large numbers of cops smashing
in doors and arresting other antifascists. Draconian bail conditions were
imposed. In total, 23 people were now under arrest in relation to the
punching of ‘O’Donovan’.

Since there was no available ‘complainant’ in the case, the cops – the
British Transport Police led by Detective Inspector Sam Blackburn – were
unable to charge Sean, or any of the other antifascists, with assault.
Instead they were charged with ‘Conspiracy to Commit Violent Disorder’. In
legal terms, ‘Violent Disorder’ occurs when a person’s behaviour is deemed
to be of such a nature that it would cause alarm or distress to someone
witnessing it, though in this case nobody had complained and it was ruled
that there was not sufficient evidence to additionally charge any of the
antifascists with ‘Violent Disorder’ itself.

Charges were dropped against one of the antifascists, a young woman, in
the early stages, but because of the sheer number of defendants the Crown
Prosecution Service (CPS) argued that, for logistical reasons, it was
necessary to split the defendants between two trials. Of course this also
put the Prosecution at a considerable advantage, particularly as they
would be prosecuted by the same individual – Mark Trafford. Both trials
would be held at Blackfriars Crown Court before Judge H.O.Blacksell.

The CPS chose to first prosecute not so much those with the most evidence
against them, since they have presented no evidence of a conspiracy
throughout, but those whom they judged would be most easily convicted.
Many of the defendants had been convicted of political activities in the
past, and because of these ‘prior convictions’ could not present character
evidence in their defence for example. The CPS knew that they could rely
on the prejudice and ignorance of the jury (one of whom sported a shirt
emblazoned with a large St George’s cross) for some convictions, and sure
enough seven antifascists were convicted as charged, with six of them
being sent immediately to jail.

As our comrades were sent to prison, the architects of the fit-up were
busy congratulating each other. Blacksell, the judge who presided over the
charade, said he would be recommending Detective Inspector Blackburn for a
commendation – For what, making travel safer for Nazis?! Perhaps Blackburn
will get the ‘Iron Cross’! This whole case revolves around one neo-Nazi,
who was not a complainant in the case, being put on his arse. For that 23
people were arrested, hundreds of cops were involved in dawn raids, and
two show trials were held costing Millions, what a great service to the
‘public’! But of course, this case is about far more than one pathetic
fascist.

Immediately before the second trial, charges were dropped against two more
of those previously accused of being involved in the ‘conspiracy’, leaving
nine more to face trial. The trial began on Monday 12th September, and
once again the Prosecution presented absolutely no evidence of a
‘conspiracy’. The jury seemed nonplussed as to why they were there. Once
again, the trial dragged on for more than three weeks.

One of the things that came out in the second trial was that a racist
Immigration Officer, who acted as a prosecution witness, and who in his
police statement described Ravi Gill as having a “typical big Asian head”
and “speaking Indian”, lied through his teeth in the first trial. He could
not have witnessed the incident as he claimed because when it happened he
was not actually there, but outside buying his ticket!

As his attempts to fit up the second group of antifascists began to
unravel, Trafford became quite desperate, and at times appeared close to
tears. He had pursued the case with personal malice and with a messianic
gleam in his eye throughout, and his arrogance led to some verbal fencing
with defendants of twice his intelligence which simply left him looking
foolish. Bereft of evidence, he simply relied on being able to mislead and
prejudice the jury as he had done in the first trial. To this end,
Trafford tried to present the neo-Nazis of ‘Blood & Honour’ and the
Anarchists and antifascists in the dock as two sides of the same coin, as
if the Nazis and partisans of World War Two had some sort of moral
equivalence. This morally repugnant position was rounded on by the Defence
in the closing speeches with Trafford pilloried to an unusual extent.
Putting the incident firmly in its political and historical context, one
of the Defence barristers even went so far as to say that the jury should
not only be acquitting the defendants, but thanking them for being
prepared to confront organised fascism.

It should be clear that this prosecution was brought to try and smash
antifascist resistance (something Trafford has privately made explicitly
clear) and to intimidate antifascists from engaging in any form of
antifascist activity. The case however, and the way that the ‘conspiracy’
law has been used in it, has huge implications for activists in general,
it is an attempt to outlaw any form of protest. Leeds ABC regard it as
highly regrettable that the case did not have the massive publicity it
warranted from the very beginning.

The jury retired to consider the verdict at 3.00pm today – They were back
again less than an hour later to acquit all nine antifascists, treating
the prosecution case with the contempt it deserves. The courtroom erupted
into cheers and cries of jubilation, with only the judge and prosecutor
left looking sour-faced. Tonight as the acquitted and supporters retired
to the pub there was every reason to celebrate. Tomorrow [5.10.2011] is
the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Cable Street. We hope that Indymedia
readers will join us in raising a glass – to our comrades who triumphed
over this judicial fit-up, to the antifascists down the ages who have been
prepared to go out onto the streets to confront fascism, and to our six
comrades who were fitted-up earlier this year and who deserve our fullest
possible support.

THE PRISONERS

The six antifascists imprisoned in the first trial were originally held in
Wormwood Scrubs prison in London, but five have now been moved to other
jails in southern and central England. Please send them letters of support
at the addresses given below. We expect Thomas Blak to be moved this week
and his new address will be published on the Leeds ABC website when that
happens. Thomas, who is Danish and has lived and worked in England for 15
years, is also under threat of deportation.

The prisoners may each receive postage stamps and Postal Orders (made
payable to ‘The Governor’ and with the prisoner’s name and prison number
written on the back). For advice on writing to prisoners please see the
Leeds ABC website.

A solidarity fund has been set up to support the prisoners in jail and
upon release. All donations, big and small, are very welcome. The fund is
administered by Leeds Anarchist Black Cross, a long-standing and reputable
prisoner support organisation, and the fund will ONLY be used to support
the prisoners directly. If you would like to contribute to the fund please
send a cheque (made payable to ‘The Cable Street Society’) to Leeds ABC,
145-149 Cardigan Road, Leeds, LS6 1LJ. Details for bank transfers are:

The Cable Street Society
Sort Code 070093
Account number 33333334
Ref 0827/704169523

We would like to thank the groups and individuals who have already
contributed to the solidarity fund, including Antifa England, Brighton &
Hove TUC Unemployed Workers Centre, Bristol ABC, Kate Sharpley Library ,
and Rebel Soul (Shambala Festival).

The Anarchist print co-op Sabcat have also produced two benefit T-shirts
in support of the prisoners. They are printed on organic cotton, fair
wear, carbon neutral, Earth Positive T-shirts and cost £14.95 including UK
postage. Sabcat are donating their labour for free, so apart from the cost
of the unprinted garment itself and the postage, all money raised goes to
the antifascist prisoners support fund. To order a T-shirt check out the
Sabcat website at www.sabcat.com. They will also be available to buy at
this year’s London Anarchist Bookfair.

Leeds ABC have produced a solidarity poster (see above) in several sizes,
which is being displayed in laminated form in numerous community centres,
social centres, pubs, cafes, bookshops, etc. Please contact us with regard
to displaying one. You can also download the graphic to display on your
website, Facebook page, etc.

Last, but by no means least, a number of revolutionary solidarity actions
have been claimed in the names of the prisoners, and we both appreciate
and applaud these acts. We should remember that the very best act of
solidarity we can offer is to continue to fight against fascism and not to
be intimidated or cowed by these latest attempts to stop us resisting.

Solidarity to the antifascist prisoners.

A few thank yous and fuck yous

Letter from a defendant in the second wave trial:

Having just been acquitted in the Antifa trial I would like to make some
quick remarks.

Respect and solidarity to my comrades in jail serving time for this
bullshit. To us you are heroes. Great anti-fascists one and all. No
Pasaran!

Respect and solidarity to my co-defendants who conducted themselves with
dignity and aplomb in the face of a slanderous and offensive onslaught
from the prosecution.

Congratulations to everyone who was at Welling train station on the 28th
of March 2009 and managed to get away without having their collar felt.
You know who you are which is more than the cops ever will.

Thank you to the jury. I suspect it took them more time to elect a
foreperson than it did to discuss any merits in the prosecution case. That
said I believe that their decision was not just an acceptance of our
innocence but an endorsement of our politics (of which they heard alot),
that more than anything gives me hope and encouragement.

Thanks to our legal team, great job well done with integrity and style, we
are eternally grateful.

Thanks to everyone who supported us throughout this trial your solidarity
will not be forgotten.

Finally, fuck the Nazi’s, nationalists, reactionaries and rulers and fuck
the police and the state that protect them.

Nizhny Novgorod anti-fascists need your solidarity and support! A call for coordinated actions around the world on March 16–18, 2012

Feb. 15, 2012 Avtonom

Friends and comrades!

We, the anti-fascists and anarchists of Nizhny Novgorod (Russia), appeal to concerned people around the world. The political police (the Center for Combating Extremism or Center “E”) have fabricated a criminal case against our comrades. Anti-fascism has been outlawed in our city. We need your solidarity and support!

What are the charges against our friends and comrades?

Five young men, our friends, have been charged with organizing an “extremist community” under the exotic name of “Antifa-RASH.” According to our illiterate police, this strange acronym stands (in English) for “Red anarhia skinheads” [sic] and should be translated from their broken English slang into Russian as “red anarchy of skinheads” (a combination of all the fears of ordinary law-abiding citizens.) Artyom Bystrov, Albert Gainutdinov, Pavel Krivonosov, Dmitry Kolesov and Oleg Gambaruk are alleged to have formed this organization in order to carry out assaults on people espousing ultra-rightwing views and to incite hatred against them and against wealthy people.

Why do we claim that the case is fabricated?

The notorious IDs (http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/s320x320/404683_235085506... — this is a photograph from the police case file), which allegedly prove that the accused were involved in an extremist organization, were planted during police searches (during which a great number of procedural violations were committed, including the fact that most of the accused were altogether absent when their apartments were searched). Thus, during a police search of the apartment of one of the accused, who was not home at the time, the official witnesses (who are required to be present under Russian law) sat outside the closed door of the apartment while the police, who had entered through a window, did as they pleased in the empty apartment. The alleged IDs contain a crude spelling error (it would be odd if leftist activists had spelled the word “anarchy” wrong). The charter of this “organization,” which was likewise planted by police during these searches, stipulates a hierarchical structure, unconditional submission to the leader, and even punishment for disobedient members. These “rules” are, of course, incompatible with leftist views and with the ideals of liberty and equality that our comrades espouse.

The second part of the criminal case, which alleges violent actions against neo-Nazis, is likewise filled with fabrications and contradictions. Pavel Krivonosov and Artyom Bystrov have airtight alibis for the time when they allegedly assaulted ultra-rightists, and most of the victims did not identify them as their assailants. As for the assault on the neo-Nazi Dmitry Redkin by anti-fascists Oleg Gambaruk and Dmitry Kolesov (a charge to which both of them have honestly confessed), this was an ordinary brawl outside a bar that had nothing to do with a premeditated political action.
Why have police singled out these men for persecution?

It is in the interests of the political police to punish these men in particular. They have never made a secret of their anti-fascist, leftist and oppositional views.

Artyom Bystrov is the principal accused. Since late April, Bystrov has been under house arrest. He has been involved in Food Not Bombs (which distributes free food, clothes and medicines to the needy) for many years. Like his comrade Pavel Krivonosov, Artyom Bystrov is an anti-fascist, a leftist social activist and an environmentalist. Bystrov and Krivonosov have been involved in organizing and providing security for anti-fascist concerts, and have taken part in animal rights, environmental, anti-nuclear and anti-fascist protests.

The political police have declared that Albert Gainutdinov is not only the founder and leader of the mythical “extremist organization,” but also the creator of the web site http://streetmob.org/. Nizhny Novgorod police apparently bear a personal animosity towards this site insofar as it has exposed their crimes as well – instances where they have tortured anti-fascists, anarchists and opposition activists. At the moment, Gainutdinov has been forced into hiding: he knows perfectly well that, if arrested, he would be threatened with physical violence or torture at the hands of Center “E” police (about which they write openly in the comments section on this very same site).

Dmitry Kolesov is a musician in a hardcore group who also makes no secret of his anti-fascist convictions.

Because of his lack of experience, Oleg Gambaruk, under pressure and threats from the police, confessed to involvement not only in the fight outside the bar, but also in the mythical “extremist community” (therefore we do not help him).

The guilt of the other accused men lies precisely in the fact that they refused to agree to act as informers when police officers attempted to force them to do this during interrogations and even under torture. They are guilty of refusing to tolerate police abuse and rampant neo-Nazi violence on our streets. They are guilty of caring about the most pressing social, environmental and political issues.

How can you help?

First of all, we need your solidarity. The authorities have ignored all the outrageous violations of human rights committed by the political police, and they refuse to acknowledge the clear fabrications committed in this criminal investigation. Our only hope is the pressure of public opinion, international attention to the case, and widespread media coverage. On March 16–18, 2012, we call for days of coordinated actions in solidarity with the Nizhny Novgorod anti-fascists.

Second, we need money to pay lawyers. Alas, we are forced to turn to you for help: we need to raise at least $3,000. We would be grateful if you were able to make a personal donation to the defense fund for our comrades or hold benefits or concerts to raise money on their behalf. The first court hearing in the case has been scheduled for early March. We will be providing you with regular updates on how much money we have raised and how much money remains to be raised.

Thank you! We are counting on your solidarity and support.

Nizhny Novgorod criminal case – Interview with Artem Bystrov, framed Anti-Fascist activist

avtonom.org

On April 26, 2011, in the morning, six young people were arrested by
Center “E” detectives (so-called “Anti-Extremist” cops). Five
anti-fascists of Nizhny Novgorod were subject to home-searches. One of
the flats was stormed by OMON (Special Police Squad), the windows were
broken because nobody was at home.

During the searches the membership cards of a non-existing organisation
“RASH-Antifa” with photos and serial numbers, evidently made by Center
“E” (Anti-Extremist Center) detectives, were planted in suspects’ homes.

Swedish Animal Rights Activist Viktor Padellaro is a fascist

It has far too late come to our knowledge that the former supported
animal rights activist Viktor Padellaro, arrested and prosecuted for
several threats against animal torturers and an McDonalds arson, is in
fact a fascist. He expresses this not only in his own blog
(http://le-clairon.blogspot.com) but also in different forums. One of
the forums of which he is a member is Nordisk.nu which is an infamous
nazi forum for radical nationalists.

We encourage you to withdraw the support and to spread this
information. I suppose no one would enjoy the comradeship of a fascist.

Embarrasing as it is, to far too late realize one should have
conducted a background check, I apologize for being part in the
spreading of false information and hope others learn from this.
Everybody acting for a similiar cause is not always a comrade but
sometimes an enemy.

Notes of a co-conspirator

Today, two years have passed since our comrade Ivan Khutorskoy was murdered in Moscow. On occasion, we publish an article which was written for Avtonom journal in Russian, and translated for Abolishing the Borders from Below in English.

“You are made of some different fabric. You are way more prepared than me for this kind of shit. I figured it out, when you told me by telephone, that Vanya is not anymore” - a young comrade put it like this once, in the frame of one discussion. We were standing on the platform of a metro, wagons of steel were scurrying on metallic rails. Their metallic clamps were squeezing
my insides. Yes, my young friend, I am definitely ready for this shit.

Upon the death of Vanya, in spirit I was already in my 4th decade, although my physical age will correspond to that much later. My twenties I had spent in a skinhead-casual frenzy, spiced with an anarcho-communist baggage of ideas. For me, all those years passed side by side with two guys. One of them left all of that behind a long time ago, now he is more into stuff like wifes/mistresses/kids/cars. Another one was Vanya. If I will be alive, healthy, and out of jail my fourth decade will not be boring either, but it will not be the same.

*****

We met around the year 2004. I was looking for new comrades, to get busy with some good old ultra-violence. It was already about a year after the collapse of the crew around FC "Mosenergo", and nothing much was going on. Practically, there were none of the right people around me. Back then, it was considered that you needed a mob of ten, 20 or 30 to give the enemy a decent beating.

And who was around? Mostly stupid kinds from the forum of antifa.ru website, even some total morons from the youth organisation of liberal "Yabloko"party. The only person from antifa.ru, who made any sense was Dzhey, for whom the first album of "Proverochnaya Lineyka" was later dedicated. But there are no obstacles, over which you may not run with some persistence . Morons vanished, normal people kept coming around. And step by step, we gathered a crew, of maybe twenty, which was capable of some action. Some people, who later became widely known, were around: DJ Stalingrad, Fedyay, Vanya. Later on, Shkobar came around (I already knew him from the times of the Mosenergo, but for a while he dropped out of Antifa, attempting to make a career as a Spartak hooligan). Later on, Tigran, whose house was bombed, came around, as well as Ilya Dzhaparidze. And of course, a number of other other impressive personalities were around as well. But Loshak is right “it's better to only write about the deceased antifa, and those who area already famous, and not to uncover those who are not yet famous.”

Before Vanya met us, he was fighting boneheads at punk concerts. Just as Dzhey was fighting Nazis with his hip-hop friends; unaffiliated with the infamous White Smoke Clan gang, famous due to its street war with boneheads in the late 1990's and early 2000's. Back then, in the middle of the 2000's, Antifa in Moscow was a clear minority. There were no any obvious ways to meet them anywhere. But if you began to trash boneheads, there would always be some
common acquaintances, who connected you with colleagues. And this is how Vanya joined.

His first action with us was a total disaster. Some foolish kids invited around 15 of us to the military town of Zarya in Moscow region. There, converged a mixed crowd of local boneheads, football hooligans and just rednecks defending "the reputation of their town" against Muscovites, a crowd several times bigger than ours. I was lucky and did not end up going to
that one. Taking into account that our side came with iron bars, it is still a mystery that nobody ended up in the morgue. Nobody got anything worse than a concussion, but this adventure did not break Vanya's spirits, and he began to come around.

We made two or three attacks each month. In the middle of the 2000's there were plenty of places in Moscow (known park benches, metro entrances), where you could drop in and find Nazis. There were also plenty of more or less right-wing gigs. Some of them were easy, you could target whoever came out from the hall, with other ones you had to be more careful, as right-wingers were only 20-30% of the crowd. Back then, there were almost no "travmats"
(rubber-bullet guns) and the habit of carrying knives was just emerging; fights took place mostly without weapons, sometimes pepper gas was used, sometimes beer bottles and iron bars.

This relative harmlessness resulted in a carefree life; there were way more fights than nowadays, often they took place in public places, even under CCTV cameras. For example, nowadays I would not be very much into attacking a Nazi in a running metro wagon. If he pulls a knife, it is highly likely that he must be killed, your face will be taped, and even if you are not arrested at the next station you are in big shit. But back in the days it was the most common thing to give a Nazi a boot in a a running train: the length of travel between two stations in the Moscow metro is pretty much one boxing round, and in the next station you disappeared from the spot, with a light sweat under your shirt.

Some Nazis got seriously wounded after coming across us. Although a couple of times cops nicked one or several of us at the spot of such fights, there was never a single felony case. Mostly we were just lucky, every time when someone got nicked, no Nazi had been seriously hurt. On the other hand, the word "Antifa" was familiar to FSB (x-KGB) only, and to a small minority of younger and more clever cops. Back then cops did not have any quota of extremists they were required to catch, and thus they were thinking like average lads: maybe these guys had reasons not to like each other, and if nobody got permanently injured or killed, it was apparently not worth it to dig into the reasons behind it.

We were not creating a spin around these fights, but they gained us notoriety amongst Nazis and youth subcultures in general. Nazis tried to find us, without a success, jumping random alternative kids. A few years later, I met a RASH-skinhead who told me a story of how he became an anarchist skinhead. One day, he was walking down the street, with a Yegor Letov-shirt on; Nazis beat him up, arguing that he was a redskin. He got interested in what that
was about, he read about it from the internet and came to the conclusion that redskins are cool. A very typical story.

A couple of words about "United Brigade 46" (OB46), a fake antifa project of Nazis. They succeeded in trapping and beating up, now deceased, Vanya and Fedyay, as well as Shkobar and a fourth person, and to make a video out of it. This footage is still often shown on TV, usually in the wrong context, as part of programs about Nazis and antifa in the mainstream media. OB46 began to make itself name for about half a year before this famous day came for
them. They made a website, and wrote rather stupid things, but in the antifa-style. People started an exchange with them, during which their stupidity became even more obvious.

I did not suspect them of being Nazis, but cops from Petrovka 38, and I tried to persuade people not to have anything to do with them. The fourth person from the video decided that they were normal lads, who just write stupid things due to their lack of enlightenment. Once, he almost exposed us, which would could have had horrible consequences. It was during the time of the Nazi-pagan music festival "Koloyar". After several such festivals, someone got hurt. It became clear to organisers that someone is after their visitors and they decided to take measures to defend themselves.

Before yet another edition of the festival, which was organised not far from the "Oktyabrskoye pole" metro station, they made a deal with local cops, who promised to dispatch extra patrols in the region. We decided that this was not worth it, and we also changed tactics. Temnozor was about to perform, and we found an excellent quote from their lyrics "I see the hour is coming, when crosses are burning, when there will be no mercy for priests in churches, when once again the gods of Russia are praised, and people are splitting to the deceitful eyes of the crucified kike". We started to spread it all over the internet that such a group was going to perform. Our efforts gave results and even some deputies wanted to interfere.

The only thing we had to do was to call them, but then Shkobar figured out that with such a big PR campaign the festival could be called off altogether and in that case there would be no chance to kick some Nazi ass. We agreed, and did not get deputies involved. Besides cops, around 100 Nazis from their leading crews came around, eager to find us. We were about twenty, but we managed to deceive them and to smash a group of people going to the concert,
thus making our point. However, without asking anyone's opinion, aforementioned the "fourth hero of the video" met the representatives of the OB46 around one hour before our action, and told them "well we are going to jump them now, bring your crew and join us." However, Nazi reconnaissance was too cowardly and therefore, never learned our convergence point. Thus, in
the end the "OB46" project was way less successful than it could have been.

We organised gigs as well. Now most of the hip-hop, punk, ska and hardcore are more or less anti-fascist, but back then, antifa-scene was totally underground, secret and marginal. Concerts were usually organised by DJ Stalingrad. We rented small clubs in the suburbs(the main income of which was trashy discos on the weekends), on the weekdays and Sundays. Sound systems were horrible, our gathering spots a tightly guarded secret. The first such concert was legendary, above any praise. No Heads and Klowns were to play. Around 60 people stuffed themselves in a small rehearsal basement. The owner of the place figured out what was going on, and came asking "what is this shit, I am not a fool, 'Korroziya Metalla' is practicing here and you are organising a concert without asking me anything". This did not put DJ Stalingrad off, he made few phone calls and we all moved to the metro station "Vodny Stadion" where, after one and a half hour the gig started, with a sound system straight from the USSR in a ballet rehearsal space in some obscure building.

************

I've been involved in plenty of anarchist projects in which we put in a lot of time and effort, and tried to be creative about, but nevertheless without any result whatsoever. When it comes to Antifa, what is different from a number of Western countries is that, in Russia the phenomena appeared around a somewhat narrow issue of self-organisation of subcultural youth to counteract bonehead outrage in concerts. Not that much effort was put in Antifa, but at
some point it began to grow like an avalanche.

At one moment we figured out that our human resource was no longer 20 fighters, but around one hundred. We had to decide what to do in these new circumstances. It was my opinion, that we should split into crews of 10-20 people and become more and more professional, terrorize Nazis in such a way which that it would not annoy police. Shkobar, Fedyay, DJ Stalingrad, on
the contrary, considered that it was cool to organise high-profile fights. We had conflicts, tensions, and dislike came into the picture; for several years I did not even shake hands with Fedyay; the first time after a long break was around half a year before he was murdered.

Vanya was hesitating, uncertain of which of the two approaches would be the best one, but he was tending more towards picking mine. Then he was jumped at his doorway, his head was hit with a baseball bat, face and neck were pierced all over with a sharpened screwdriver. He had to spend five months in a hospital, and obviously, it took much more time to be fit for fighting again.

And so, the show-off strategy prevailed. Mobs were from 30 up to 110, the highest number being reached in the action against a right-wing concert in the "Tochka"-club. With bottles, iron bars and flares, various nationalist concerts and events were attacked. This went on for a year or year and a half, maybe ten or 15 such attacks. Recognition came from the mainstream
media and even more on internet forums. I was an opponent of such actions, the risk was too big and not worth it, and my relations with the organisers of those actions were somewhat cold.

I do not want to set the record straight in public, I just want to say that around the group of people, which organised all these things, the further it went, the more all the kinds of pointless shit came down. People started to came up, who wanted to trash Nazis but not with the "main group". In general, there more and more people all the time with no chances whatsoever to
organise them all into one mob. There was also the story with the inquiry of Duma deputy Alksnis, about the criminal case he insisted be opened against "a group organising riots". This limited the activities of "main group" a lot, although I still have not figured out why they did not jail all of them back then. Either the cops were too lazy, or from the point of view of the state
propaganda it was not considered beneficial to have a court process against antifascists in "the country which defeated fascism." Especially, as back then, the official opinion of the police force was that there are no fascists whatsoever in Russia, just the occasional hooliganism by restless youth.

**********

Finally, Vanya was back in shape and a group got organised around him. Later, either Nazis, or investigators from Petrovka called it "the Kostolom gang". The "main group" was not happy with this new initiative, during the first half a year their relations with us were rather cold. We could mobilize from 15 to 30 fighters of varying quality, from 16 to 25 years old. From time to time we acted together with other groups. We had a detachment of scouts, frail 16-19 years old girls. Almost all of them found boyfriends among those for whom they did reconnaissance work. A couple of these girls, however, found guys from the opposite camp, which of course was an epic fail; obviously they were excluded from everything, but they already knew way too much.

Vanya organised trainings. In the beginning, it was an all-out trashy gym at the very edge of Moscow: With rusty irons, boxing pearls, and no shower. It was straight from Romper Stomper or Russia 88. Then we lost it, and for some time we had a way better gym, without irons but with a shower and mats, Vanya was teaching us Sambo. We also went to forest to beat each other with gloves, we called it "Boycovski klub", "Fight Club", which was later shortened to Beka. Since then, Beka has become a word widely adopted into the jargon of Russian Antifa.

There were plenty of fights. I liked most the one when we were riding in the metro around yet another "Russian march." Some kids entered the wagon, all around full of Russian imperial (black-golden-white) flags. One of them was especially distinguished by his black "shitcrushers" (combat boots), black ski-mask and an imperial flag armband. The new passengers looked around the wagon, and one of them said "Let us make a 'White wagon'"(a Nazi slang term
for a pogrom in the metro). "It is our people here!" We were laughing so much we were about to drop. "What if they are Antifa?" - another young patriot was wondering. He had barely uttered the words, when the doors closed, and from then on imperial flags were just flying all over the wagon. We were almost caught by the cops, but retreated successfully. I think we actually saved those morons, if they had just jumped on someone with such an outlook, most likely they would have been sent to Kolyma straight from the underground. But with us they just lost few teeth and got few concussions, but could roam free.

************

The violence was constantly escalating. The murder of Timur Kacharava was political news at a national level, as well as the murder of Aleksandr Ryukhin. Even the attack by Nazis against musicians returning from a concert in the Moscow region (the bassist of the group "Shlyuz" was seriously wounded) was generally considered a senseless outrage. But actually, there is nothing surprising in such an escalation. Nobody has extra ribs and kidneys to be wasted. A knife in your pocket is some minimal guarantee that you will save them. And, if you know that a person you are about to jump has a knife in his pocket, most likely you would like to have one as well.

Once, we caught some Nazis around an event of the NSO, "National-Socialist Society" (later its members were sentenced in a series of court cases for some heavy racial serial killing). We were around fifteen in the center of Moscow, we walked down the street with the distance growing between each other. I saw two big boneheads, around fifteen meters from me, jumped by those of us who were closest to them. One of us gases them, another one aims to the head and shoots with rubber bullets. Then a shout - "he has a knife!". I move towards them and unconsciously open my knife. One Nazi is lying on the ground, another scoundrel, also gassed, runs away fast, although the road is jammed with cars. He gets away. We figured out that two of us had been stabbed. Rubber bullets had made it through an open door of a bank, security
was running out with machine guns, dressed in bulletproof vests. They started to help the wounded, and advised us to get the fuck out before police showed up. We gave the lying Nazi some goodbyes and vanished.

Due to the escalation of violence, many people left Antifa for good. I think this was because they understood the conflict in the frame of the subculture, and obviously not so many people are ready to risk their lives for some nice music. I do not consider myself as an especially brave person, but to me the conflict with fascism was always an ideological one. If you look at
the "fa/antifa" issue in a political, instead of subcultural context, you might be more prepared for such situations.

It became clear that back then the mob was not prepared for the toughness of it all. We invited maybe half a hundred persons to each fight, once we had a meeting with maybe the 15 most active people. We checked the list of people who we invited, and figured out that none of the persons present knew more than five of them. And this was under the threat of police provocations, fascist infiltration, danger from the persons we simply never double-checked,
and from side of blowhards as well...

Besides that, amongst us and amongst the skinheads around our crew, there were not only friends of the bottle, but also people who when boozing were into beating up someone, whoever came around. Once, such a case ended up in a shootout with local rednecks in one of the cities of the Moscow region. Fortunately, the rednecks decided not to pursue the conflict any further,
whereas it was 50 of our people waiting in the bushes for 3 hours with iron bars. And in case there had been a fight, someone could have gotten killed. All because someone got drunk and had his nose broken...

*****

Due to all of this, our group got reorganised. How, you will learn if I reach my fifth decade.

I kept contact with Vanya, we had various projects. Last time I saw him alive was in our mixed martial arts tournament "No surrender!". Then I called him a couple of times, wanted to have a talk... around the time he got shot. I wanted to have a talk about his role as a public person, in a situation where everyone understood that he was a key person. I was afraid that after any
bullshit, if cops got annoyed, Vanya would be the first person they would send to jail. They had just trumped up a case against Shkobar and he did one year in prison, there were some fresh stories for which they could nail Vanya on... I wanted to explain that to Vanya, to sit down and to think what to do with his image. But a Nazi bullet to the back of the head canceled all that.

Vanya was one of those people, in the way of whom even trams don't want to get. He was an anarchist, dropped in at editorial meetings of the Avtonom-journal, even wrote something for us. But for him, the first priority was always the war between Nazis and RASH. I would not say that he was one of my best friends, but he was often around at my birthday, I visited his, a couple of times we celebrated the new year together. It is hard to day, but I think that during the last years of his life, he did not have much more involvement in it than recreational activities and resistance with us, the co-conspirators.
