Audio Description

For those who have low vision or are blind, there is a selection of films in the MIFF program that have Audio Description (AD) services available. AD refers to an additional narration track for blind and visually impaired consumers of visual media.

It consists of a narrator talking through the presentation, describing what is happening on the screen during the natural pauses in the audio, and sometimes during dialogue if deemed necessary. At the accessible locations the signal is sent to a receiver that is worn by the user as a headset. Patrons can pick up a portable audio player from the Box Office.

Should you wish to book an AD Device for this session, please call Box Office in advance on 03 8666 4898. Once booked, your device will be available for collection from the Venue Box Office. Please note that the venue box office refers to the cinema venue box office, not the MIFF specific box office.

Should the film appear as ‘standby’, contact the Box Office and quote the code ‘ACCESS MIFF’, as additional tickets may be available.

Notes on Blindness: Enhanced Sound Design

The film Notes on Blindness, is based on Melbourne-born academic John Hull who in 1983, facing complete blindness after years of deterioration in his eyesight, attempted to come to terms with this "world beyond sight" by recording hours of his thoughts and feelings onto audio cassette across a period of three years.

In his writing, John Hull always sought to bring blind and sighted people closer together. A screening of this film, which will play on July 30th, is an Enhanced Soundtrack version using more original narration from John and Marilyn to tell the story, along with extra sound design and music. It’s a version that evokes the action and feelings of the film into words, rather providing a literal description like standard Audio Description. This version will be played for the whole audience and will not require any extra headsets of devices.

Should the film appear as ‘standing by’, contact the Box Office and quote the code ‘ACCESS MIFF’, as additional tickets may be available.
