Gallbladder

In vertebrates the gallbladder (also gall bladder, biliary vesicle or cholecyst), is a small organ where bile (a fluid produced by the liver) is stored and concentrated before it is released into the small intestine. Humans can live without a gallbladder. The surgical removal of the gallbladder is called a cholecystectomy.

Structure

The gallbladder is a hollow organ that sits just beneath the right lobe of the liver. In adults, the gallbladder measures approximately 8 centimetres (3.1 in) in length and 4 centimetres (1.6 in) in diameter when fully distended. The gallbladder has a capacity of about 100 mL.

The gallbladder is shaped like a tapered sac, with the open end opening into the biliary tree and the cystic duct. Anatomically, the gallbladder is divided into three sections: the fundus, body, and neck: The fundus is a rounded end that faces the front of the body. The body is in contact with the liver, lying in the gallbladder fossa, a depression at the bottom of the liver. The neck tapers and is continuous with the cystic duct, part of the biliary tree. The cystic duct unites with the common hepatic duct to become the common bile duct. At the junction of the neck of the gallbladder and the cystic duct, there is an out-pouching of the gallbladder wall forming a mucosal fold known as Hartmann's pouch, where gallstones commonly get stuck.

Alexandria also called The City of Alexandria is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 139,966, and in 2014, the population was estimated to be 150,575. Statistics says around 35 percent of female and 20 percent of male ,by the age of 75 years, do suffer from this gall bladder stone disease. In USA , 6.3 million male and 14.2 million female in between the age group of 20-74 years , suffer from this disease. Gall bladder stone disease is the most common disease from gastrointestinal system. Symptomatic gallstone disease needs proper treatment. With the evolution of treatment, laparoscopic cholecystectomy (Laparoscopic removal of gall bladder) is the gold standard for treatment of gall bladder disease unless any contraindication for surgery. Through tiny holes in the abdominal wall, the surgery is performed and the whole gall bladder along with the stones inside, is removed. Function of gall bladder - it stores and concentrates Bile juice, which is formed and secreted from liver.When we eat , the stimulus from duodenum,helps contraction of gall bladder and release of bile juice into duodenum.This bile juice get mixed with food and helps in digestion. But when gall bladder is diseased , it looses it's function.So the whole gall bladder along with the stones are removed.
