Bloodshed in Bayonne

October 8, 2016 is the 100th anniversary of the strike at Standard Oil’s Bayonne, N.J., refineries. In the course of the ten-day strike, 4 people were killed and 86 wounded. The free press demonstrated collusion between the corporation and the city authorities in what John Reed described as a police riot. Yet, not a word of this is mentioned in the Rockefeller biographies.

Why We Lost the War – Diego Abad de Santillán

A retrospective on the Spanish Civil War by the FAI leader, Diego Abad de Santillán, published in 1940, in which the former Minister of the Economy of the Generalitat blames foreign (especially Russian) intervention, the farcical “non-intervention” of the western democracies, and the centralism of the (Russian-ruled) Republic for Franco’s victory, citing long passages from official FAI documents, reports from various CNT committees, testimonials of front line soldiers, minutes from meetings of the Popular Front and libertarian plenums, etc., as well as his own wartime suggestions concerning military strategy (guerrilla warfare), and expresses regrets for his pacifying role in May 1937.

Approaches: Drugs and Ecstatic Intoxication – Ernst Jünger

More than just a book about drugs, Approaches is a memoir-notebook covering the years 1910-1970—whose author, Ernst Jünger (1895-1998), was at various times a war hero, a Nazi sympathizer who never joined the Party, a suspect in Stauffenberg’s plot to kill Hitler, and a major figure in 20th century German literature—of interest not only for its accounts of acid trips with Albert Hofmann, but for the author’s reflections on mythology, botany, entomology, literature, art, dreams, death, asceticism, etc., written during a period when Jünger was articulating his theory of the “anarch”, later depicted in more detail in his remarkable novel, Eumeswil (1977).
