Once upon a time I was falling apart. Now I'm always falling in love. Pick up the microphone. When Rob Sheffield moved to New York City in the summer of 2001, he was a young widower trying to start a new life in a new town. Behind, in the past, was his life as a happily married rock critic, with a wife he adored, and a massive collection of mix tapes that captured their life together. And then, in a flash, all he had left were the tapes. Beyoncé, Bowie, Bon Jovi, Benatar . . . One night, some friends dragged him to a karaoke bar in the West Village. A night out was a rare occasion for Rob back then. Turn around Somehow, that night in a karaoke bar turned into many nights, in many karaoke bars. Karaoke became a way out, a way to escape the past, a way to be someone else if only for the span of a three-minute song. Discovering the sublime ridiculousness of karaoke, despite the fact that he couldn't carry a tune, he began to find his voice. Turn around And then the unexpected happened. A voice on the radio got Rob's attention. The voice came attached to a woman who was unlike anyone he'd ever met before. A woman who could name every constellation in the sky, and every Depeche Mode B side. A woman who could belt out a mean Bonnie Tyler. Bright Eyes Turn Around Bright Eyes is an emotional journey of hilarity and heartbreak with a karaoke soundtrack. It's a story about finding the courage to move on, clearing your throat, and letting it rip. It's a story about navigating your way through adult romance. And it's a story about how songs get tangled up in our deepest emotions, evoking memories of the past while inspiring hope for the future. About the Author: Rob Sheffield is a columnist for Rolling Stone, where he has been writing about music, TV, and pop culture since 1997. He is the author of two national bestsellers Love Is a Mix Tape: Love and Loss, One Song at a Time and Talking to Girls About Duran Duran: One Young Man's Quest for True Love and a Cooler Haircut. He also appears regularly on VH1. He lives with his wife in Brooklyn.
Rolling Stone's Rob Sheffield interviews "Dean of American Rock Critics" Robert Christgau on his new memoir, Going into the City: Portrait of a Critic as a Young Man. Robert’s title isn’t simply vanity—he’s navigated the world of music criticism since 1967, and his new memoir takes us both through his life in New York and his tales of Woodstock, Chicago '68, and many more. Rob Sheffield has become a cultural sensation of his own—with books like Turn Around Bright Eyes and Love Is a Mixtape, Rob has carved out his place in the world of music criticism. Rob Sheffield, author of the acclaimed "Love is a Mix Tape," has a new book out, "Turn Around Bright Eyes: The Rituals and Love of Karaoke" (It Books). It's a funny-sad memoir about how Sheffield overcame emotional turmoil after the untimely death of his wife through the power of, among other things, karaoke. His adventures take him from Manhattan to the Mojave desert, and from grief to flat-out exuberant head-over-heels love. We caught up with Sheffield at BookExpo America 2013 and talked about all things karaoke, including the perils of doing your own rendition of Sinatra at a retirement community.

I stayed one night at the Novotel, Sheffield in March, 2015. It was a Saturday night, I booked a double room for two people with Booking.com for £79.00 (room only). The advertised breakfast price on Booking.com was £13.95, which we were not prepared to pay, however, upon check-in breakfast was offered at £9.95 - if booked before midnight. We decided to go with that option. If you are using Booking.com to book a room here, go for the room only option, and pay for breakfast upon arrival. The hotel is very well situated in Sheffield city centre, a 5-7 minute uphill walk from Sheffield railway station. You can enter from the Station side via the lower ground floor, or from the Winter Gardens side on the upper ground floor. If entering on the lower ground floor there are both stairs and a lift for getting upstairs. Note on the lower ground floor there is also a fitness suite and swimming pool - it is a very small pool, and the changing rooms are tiny, so it's probably better to get changed in your room. You need to get a keycard from reception to unlock the doors to the fitness area and swimming pool. Reception is large, colourful and bright, and the reception staff were all friendly and helpful. We were told upon check-in that an event was taking place and that there may be 'some noise' until midnight. They weren't wrong, it was boom boom boom until just after midnight. We didn't let it bother us, but I can imagine it would be an annoyance to many people. I asked for a room with a view on a high floor, however my view was of student flats next door, not a nice view at all, and I was really disappointed by this. I specifically requested a good view on Booking.com (hoping for a view over the valley), but I didn't bother complaining this time, as we were heading straight out after check-in. The room was the usual high standard that Novotel offer, no complaints really, other than the ironing board and iron taking up 50% of the wardrobe, and their being no small hand washing sink in the toilet room (I find this unhygienic). We did enjoy our stay here, and I would stay again, but I would insist on a room with a better view. The Dallas Morning News 2014-08-15Sheffield i/ˈʃɛfiːld/ is a city and metropolitan borough of South Yorkshire, England. Its name derives from the River Sheaf, which runs through the city. Historically a part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, and with some of its southern suburbs annexed from Derbyshire, the city has grown from its largely industrial roots to encompass a wider economic base. The population of the City of Sheffield is 555,500 (2010 est.) and it is one of the eight largest regional English cities that make up the English Core Cities Group.
During the 19th century, Sheffield gained an international reputation for steel production. Many innovations were developed locally, including crucible and stainless steel, fuelling an almost tenfold increase in the population during the Industrial Revolution. Sheffield received its municipal charter in 1843, becoming the City of Sheffield in 1893. International competition in iron and steel caused a decline in traditional local industries during the 1970s and 1980s, coinciding with the collapse of coal mining in the area.
Rob Sheffield (born February 2, 1966) is an American music journalist and author. He is currently a contributing editor at Rolling Stone, writing music reviews and essays on pop culture. Prior to that, he was a contributing editor at Blender before the print version of the magazine folded in 2009, and at Spin. A native of Boston, Sheffield attended Yale and the University of Virginia.
His first book, Love is a Mix Tape: Life and Loss, One Song at a Time (an excerpt of which was featured in the January 2007 issue of GQ), was released by Random House in January 2007. It received starred reviews in Publishers Weekly and Library Journal.
Most of Love is a Mix Tape takes place in Charlottesville, Virginia, where Sheffield met and married his late wife Renée Crist, a fellow DJ at radio station WTJU, and continues in New York City after Crist's death in 1997. The couple had no children.
Sheffield remarried in 2006 and lives in Brooklyn, New York.
Sheffield's second book, released in July 2010, is called Talking to Girls About Duran Duran: One Young Man's Quest for True Love and a Cooler Haircut.
Amanda Stern (born and raised in Greenwich Village, New York City) is the author of the critically acclaimed novel The Long Haul ISBN-10: 1932360069, whose metaphors, the San Francisco Chronicle called, "so fresh they are almost jarring." In 2003 Stern founded the highly acclaimed and popular The Happy Ending Music and Reading Series. A permanent resident of New York City, Stern makes her living writing children's books, and producing and hosting literary events for cultural organizations such as The National Book Foundation, for whom she hosted the National Book Award's first ever "5 Under 35" ceremony, and The PEN American Center, Yaddo, the French Embassy, MASS MoCA and others. Her fiction, non-fiction, and poetry have appeared in, among other places, The New York Times, The New York Times Magazine, Filmmaker, The Believer, Post Road, St. Ann's Review, Salt Hill, Hayden's Ferry Review, Five Chapters and Spinning Jenny.
