Celebrate Gillard's misogyny speech ... with a shopping bag

It's four years ago, almost to the day, when Julia Gillard took to the despatch box in Federal Parliament and told then Opposition LeaderTony Abbott she was not about to be lectured by him on misogyny.

You don't remember it? Ask one of your Guardian-reading friends.

And to mark this auspicious occasion – the moment when liberal-leaning news outlets the world over momentarily suspended their shark-attack and snake-bite-dominated coverage of Australia – Country Labor has an offer you are NOT going to want to refuse.

An email went out late Wednesday to the party faithful breathlessly noting the four-year anniversary of Gillard's famous "Misogyny Speech" and offering members a chance to snap up a nifty bit of memorabilia.

"In celebration of Julia Gillard's (Political Smackdown) Speech we're letting go of something pretty special, and we want you to claim it," the email reads. "Chip in $10 or more now and you could walk away with this signed, original Julia Gillard campaign poster and limited edition tote bag."

A tote bag? Really? Like, the sort of thing that you take to Woolies to avoid your kitchen cupboards backing up with those pesky plastic bags? So let me get this straight. The good folk at Country Labor want to mark what they consider to be one of the finest pieces of political oratory this country has ever known – a feminist rallying cry the likes of which this country has never heard – by issuing a limited edition shopping bag?

I reckon that will do me for the week.
