Matthew Rutledge tried to stop the attacker and described the scene of panic as passengers tried to help Cian and others.

The boy was treated at Hawthorn station and then taken to hospital.

A 73-year-old woman was also in hospital in a stable condition after allegedly being bitten and stomped on at the station in the same attack.

A 54-year-old man also received minor injuries.

Cian's family is furious that the man charged with the attack was not behind bars for the alleged Christmas Day attack.

Mother Michelle Channon said she is devastated and worried her son will suffer emotional scars.

"This should never have happened in the first place," Ms Channon said.

"Cian's borderline severely autistic and for a disabled child to not be safe going home from school is I think rather shocking."

She said it would take a lot of work to rebuild his confidence to take public transport again.

Mr Reeves  appeared in court on Friday charged with conduct endangering life, intentionally causing injury and committing an offence while on bail.

The court heard he has schizophrenia and would require medication while in custody.

Reeves did not apply for bail and is due to appear again on October 28.
