The San Fernando Valley is an urbanized valley located in Los Angeles County, southern California, defined by the mountains of the Transverse Ranges circling it. Home to 1.8 million people, it lies north of the larger and more populous Los Angeles Basin.
Nearly two thirds of the Valley's land area is part of the city of Los Angeles. The other incorporated cities in the Valley are Glendale, Burbank, San Fernando, Hidden Hills, and Calabasas.
The San Fernando Valley is about 260 square miles (670 km2) bounded by the Santa Susana Mountains to the northwest, the Simi Hills to the west, the Santa Monica Mountains and Chalk Hills to the south, the Verdugo Mountains to the east, and the San Gabriel Mountains to the northeast. The northern Sierra Pelona Mountains, northwestern Topatopa Mountains, southern Santa Ana Mountains, and Downtown Los Angeles skyscrapers can be seen from higher neighborhoods, passes, and parks in the San Fernando Valley.
San Fernando or also known as San Fernando/SAP Center is a light rail station operated by Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority. The station has two side platforms and two trackways. San Fernando is served by the Mountain View–Winchester light rail line.
The station was opened in 2005 as part of VTA's Vasona light rail extension.
Address: 441 West San Fernando Street, San Jose, California 95110
Nearest cross-streets: Delmas Avenue and Gifford Avenue
Geographic coordinates: 37° 19' 49.3" North, 121° 53' 54.2" West
The San Fernando Station features three public art sculptures. They are entitled “King of the Urban Jungle,” “Simba × 2,” and “Lying Beast.” All three statues are arranged together on a small circular piece of lawn on the south edge of the station.
"Artist Iiona Malka Rich created this sculpture of three, multicolored striped lions with illuminating eyes (using fiber optics) from a bronze-like material. One has eight legs with two heads, and the other two lions have six legs each. The theme for this art feature is “Life is a Circus” which is inscribed around the base of the artwork. In addition, lion footprints are “stamped” on the ground through the plaza to replicate the natural movement of these unique animals."
Roy Rogers (born Leonard Franklin Slye; November 5, 1911 – July 6, 1998) was an American singer and cowboy actor who was one of the most popular Western stars of his era. Known as the "King of the Cowboys", he appeared in over 100 films and numerous radio and television episodes of The Roy Rogers Show. In many of his films and television episodes, he appeared with his wife Dale Evans, his golden palomino Trigger, and his German Shepherd dog Bullet. His show ran on radio for nine years before moving to television from 1951 through 1957. His productions usually featured a sidekick, often Pat Brady, Andy Devine, or George "Gabby" Hayes. In his later years, Rogers lent his name to the Roy Rogers Restaurants franchised chain.
Rogers (Leonard Slye) was born to Mattie (née Womack) and Andrew "Andy" Slye in Cincinnati, Ohio. The family lived in a tenement building on 2nd Street, where Riverfront Stadium would later be constructed (Rogers would later joke that he was born at second base). Dissatisfied with his job and city life, Andy and his brother Will built a 12-by-50-foot (3.7 m × 15.2 m) houseboat from salvage lumber, and in July 1912 the Slye family traveled up the Ohio River towards Portsmouth, Ohio. Desiring a more stable existence in Portsmouth, they purchased land on which to build a house, but the Great Flood of 1913 allowed them to move the houseboat to their property and continue living in it on dry land.

The California Highway Patrol was involved in a hour-long pursuit Friday evening of a van traveling at a high rate of speed on freeways and surface streets in the San Fernando Valley. The chase began just after 4:30 p.m. in Chino, according to the Lt. Covington with the Chino Police Department. Police had received a call from a Kohls Department store on Grand Avenue regarding a possible forgery, Covington said. By the time officers arrived, the alleged suspect was fleeing and a pursuit was initiated, according to police.

Year-round sunny weather, gorgeous beaches and an abundance of family-friendly attractions make Southern California one of the most popular vacation destinations in the world. Encompassing the southern third of the Golden State, SoCal stretches west from the inland deserts and mountains to the temperate shores of the Pacific Ocean. Many of region’s cities and communities have enough sights and activities to serve as a travel destination in their own right, but it would be shame to visit the Southland without hitting the highlights. Thanks to an extensive freeway system, getting around is relatively easy, despite the occasional traffic jam. It’s possible to spend the morning surfing the waves and the afternoon skiing or hiking in the mountains. From its beautiful beaches and national parks ...

From Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1971_San_Fernando_earthquake The 1971 San Fernando earthquake (also known as Sylmar earthquake) struck the San Fernando Valley near Sylmar at 6:00:55 a.m. PST on February 9, 1971, with a magnitude of 6.6. There are various names for this earthquake. Seismologists call it the San Fernando earthquake. USGS 'Sylmar Quake' or 'Sylmar earthquake' is the name initially given to the event by local media outlets, because the worst damage was to the Olive View Medical Center, located in Sylmar. Local veterans of 'the Sylmar Quake' commonly refer to this seismic event as the 'February Ninth' quake. Contains the famous line about the earth shaking "like an angry parent shakes his screaming child!"

Oh! I'm packin' my grip
And I'm leavin' today
'Cause I'm takin' a trip
California way
I'm gonna settle down and never more roam
And make the San Fernando Valley my home
I'll forget my sins, yes, yes
I'll be makin' new friends
Where the West begins
And the sunset ends
'Cause I've decided where yours truly really oughta be
And it's the San Fernando Valley for me
I think that I'm safe in statin'
She will be waitin'
When my lonely journey is done
And kindly old Rev'rend Thomas
Made us a promise
He will make the two of us one
So, I'm hittin' the trail
To the cow country
You can forward my mail
Care of R-F-D
I'm gonna settle down and never more roam
And make the San Fernando Valley my home
(Instrumental Break)
I think that I'm safe in statin'
She's gonna be be waitin'
When my lonely journey is done
And kindly old Rev'rend Thomas
Made us a promise
He will make the two of us one
So, I'm hittin' the trail
To the cow country
You can forward my mail
