Venice (English /ˈvɛnɪs/ VEN-iss; Italian: Venezia [veˈnɛttsja]) is a city in northeastern Italy sited on a group of 118 small islands separated by canals and linked by bridges. It is located in the marshy Venetian Lagoon which stretches along the shoreline, between the mouths of the Po and the Piave Rivers. Venice is renowned for the beauty of its setting, its architecture, and its artwork. The city in its entirety is listed as a World Heritage Site, along with its lagoon.
Venice is the capital of the Veneto region. In 2009, there were 270,098 people residing in Venice's comune (the population estimate of 272,000 inhabitants includes the population of the whole Comune of Venezia; of whom around 60,000 live in the historic city of Venice (Centro storico); 176,000 in Terraferma (the mainland), mostly in the large frazioni (roughly equivalent to "parishes" or "wards" in other countries) of Mestre and Marghera; and 31,000 on other islands in the lagoon). Together with Padua and Treviso, the city is included in the Padua-Treviso-Venice Metropolitan Area (PATREVE), with a total population of 2,600,000. PATREVE is only a statistical metropolitan area without any degree of autonomy.
The Pacific Time Zone observes standard time by subtracting eight hours from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC−8). The standard time in this zone is based on the mean solar time of the 120th meridian west of the Greenwich Observatory. During daylight saving time, its time offset is UTC−7 and is thus based on the mean solar time of the 105th meridian west of the Greenwich Observatory.
In the United States and Canada, this time zone is generically called the Pacific Time Zone (PT). Specifically, it uses Pacific Standard Time (PST) when observing standard time (late autumn to early spring), and Pacific Daylight Time (PDT) when observing daylight saving time (early spring to late autumn). Most of Canada uses daylight saving time. In Mexico the UTC−8 time zone is known as the Northwest Zone, which is synchronized with the U.S. PDT daylight saving schedule.
The largest city in the Pacific Time Zone is Los Angeles, California; the city's metropolitan area is the largest in the zone.
Standard time is the synchronization of clocks within a geographical area or region to a single time standard, rather than using solar time or a locally chosen meridian (longitude) to establish a local mean time standard. Historically, the concept was established during the 19th century to aid weather forecasting and train travel. Applied globally in the 20th century, the geographical areas became extended around evenly spaced meridians into time zones which (usually) centered on them. The standard time set in each time zone has come to be defined in terms of offsets from Universal Time. In regions where daylight saving time is used, that time is defined by another offset, from the standard time in its applicable time zone(s).
The adoption of standard time, because of the inseparable correspondence between time and longitude, solidified the concepts of halving the globe into an eastern and western hemisphere, with one prime meridian (as well its opposite International Date Line) replacing the various prime meridians that had previously been used.

On a beautiful Thanksgiving weekend on the Venice bike path an LAPD officer was blocking the path on his motorcycle and another young girl was partially blocking the other side and bike traffic was backed up. I said, "officer, your motorcycle is blocking the bike path" to which he replied, "I can give you a ticket for that". As seen on YoVenice. :) A bit later and I have sirens pulling me over and I record the rest. You really gotta listen to how stupid this is. Some good quotes in there.

On 29 March 1516, the Venetian Republic created the first ghetto on a small island in the north-western sestiere of Cannaregio. Five hundred years later to the very day, I went there for the visit you can see in this film. As a historian of the Holocaust, it seemed appropriate to visit on this day as I was so close to Venice in my motorhome. The decision taken in 1516 to separate the Jews from the other residents of the city was possibly due to the deline of Venice as a power. The Venetians were suspicious of all and foreign embassies such as those of France, England and Spain had also been forced to leave for the area of Cannaregio. This was a former industrial area - such as had existed in the fifteen century and earlier. Whereas Jews had to live in the ghetto, it was not so bad t...

From the burgeoning Venice Beach art community in the 1970s and the challenges of casting a thirty-five-hundred-pound polyester resin sculpture to the present day implications for storing, displaying, transporting, and conserving such a colossal work of art—From Start to Finish recounts the remarkable story behind the making of Gray Column, a monumental sculpture by Southern California artist De Wain Valentine. Told largely through interviews with Valentine and his contemporaries, his studio assistants, collectors, conservators, curators, and scientists, this documentary reveals the obstacles that had to be overcome to cast pieces the size of Gray Column, the importance and influence of Valentine's work, and the issues related to its conservation and exhibition at the Getty Center in 201...

And now the purple dust of twilight time
Steals across the meadows of my heart
High up in the sky the little stars climb
Always reminding me that we're apart
You wander down the lane and far away
Leaving me a song that will not die
Love is now the stardust of yesterday
The music of the years gone by
Sometimes I wonder why I spend
The lonely night dreaming of a song
The melody haunts my reverie
And I am once again with you
When our love was new
And each kiss an inspiration
But that was long ago
Now my consolation
Is in the stardust of a song
Beside a garden wall
When stars are bright
You are in my arms
The nigthingale tells his fairy tale
A paradise where roses grew
Though I dream in vain
In my heart it will remain
My stardust melody
The memory a loves refrain
