A fugitive boss of a powerful ‘Ndrangheta Mafia clan in Italy was found hiding in a bunker under his home and forced by police to crawl out of his hole — on camera. Antonio Pelle, 54, known as “Mamma,” was named as the head of a Calabrian Mafia clan that bears his family name, which is based in the town of San Luca. Police traced Pelle to his own family home in the town of Bovalino, in the province of Reggio Calabria. In his house, concealed by a large cabinet, was a sealable cavity cut into the wall. Inside was a small bunker used as a hiding spot, containing a mattress, water bottles, toilet paper, a cooling fan and bottles for him to pee in. He was recaptured on Oct. 5, 2016, after escaping from a hospital in Locri in 2011.
Pelle was listed as one of Italy's 100 most dangerous fugitives but was in the process of being upgraded — he was to be listed on the Top 10 most dangerous fugitives list. Police said he had been sentenced to 20 years in jail for mafia association and drug trafficking. While he was on house arrest he disappeared.
Police traced Pelle to his own home in Bovalino, where he was found with a police camera capturing the ignoble situation. Pelle fled house arrest sentenced 20 years in prison as a result of a definitive sentence for Mafia association and drug dealing.
The Pelle-Vottari clan came to public prominence trough its bloody vendetta with local mob rivals, the Nirta-Strangio clan, that culminated in Germany in the notrious Duisburg massacre of August 15, 2007, when six people linked to the Pelle clan were gunned down outside a pizzeria in the German town of Duisberg..
The roots of the dramtic feud apparently stem from a fight at a San Luca carnival
in 1991 that led to two men from the Stangio-Nirta clan being killed. It led to a tit-for-tat feud. It continued to escalate when a Pelle clan member was paralyzed in a botched assasination attempt as he stood on the balcony wih his newborn child. In the revenge attack, Pelle-Vottari gunman shot up the home of Giovanni Luca Nirta, the Nirta-Strangio clan’s boss, on Christmas Day in 2006. Killed in the ensuing gunfire was the boss’s wife, Maria Strangio. Only a spectacular act of retaliation could be expected from such an outrage. Less than a year later, the Duisberg massacre took place, with two of the victims suspected of being involved in the killing of Maria Strangio.
Pelle was well aquainted with hidden bunkers. When he was last arrested in 2008, he was also found in an underground bunker, this one complete with a marijuana garden.

Pelle è al vertice dell’omonima cosca che si contrappone nella provincia di Reggio Calabria alla cosca Nirta-Strangio. Tra quest’ultima cosca e la cosca Pelle-Vottari è in corso un faida culminata con la strage di Duisburg del 15 agosto 2007, dove furono assassinate sei persone. Per questa strage fu accertato il coinvolgimento anche di Antonio pelle che il 15 settembre 2011, mentre si trovava in ospedale a Locri per problemi di salute, in regime di arresti domiciliari, si rese irreperibile.

A vedere queste immagini, ci facciamo la solita domanda: ma vale davvero la pena fare una vita così? Magari hai milioni di euro nascosti da qualche parte. Ma vivi come un topo, nel buio. Dormi con un occhio solo, nel timore che ti piombino in casa per arrestarti. O, peggio, che la cosca avversaria uccida te. E anche i tuoi familiari. E' stato preso così, Antonio Pelle, 54 anni. Era nascosto nella sua abitazione di Bovalino, in un'intercapedine ricavata tra due stanze. L'ingresso del rifugio era davvero stretto, grande quasi come l'apertura di una piccola cassaforte domestica. Pelle vi si infilava non appena venivano avviati i controlli delle forze dell'ordine. E così non veniva trovato. Ma stavolta è andata diversamente. Ancora una volta è stato dimostrato che i boss della 'ndrangheta non si allontanano mai dalla loro zona d'influenza. Antonio Pelle, detto “La Mamma”, era latitante dall’aprile del 2011, quando fuggì dall’ospedale di Locri, dove era stato ricoverato per una grave forma di anoressia. Deve scontare una pena di 20 anni ed un mese di reclusione per associazione mafiosa, coltivazione illecita di sostanze stupefacenti, ricettazione, evasione e detenzione abusiva di armi e munizioni. Pelle sarebbe il capo dello schieramento criminale ritenuto responsabile della cosiddetta “Strage di Natale”, avvenuta nel 2006, in cui morì Maria Strangio. La strage si inquadra nel più ampio contesto della faida che, dal 1991, ha insanguinato San Luca e che ha visto contrapporsi le cosche Pelle, Vottari e Romeo da una parte e Strangio e Nirta dall’altra. Lo scontro è culminato poi nella strage di Duisburg, in Germania, il giorno di ferragosto del 2007, quando furono uccisi sei presunti affiliati della cosca Pelle-Vottari. Antonio Pelle
Antonio Pelle (San Luca, March 1, 1932 - November 4, 2009), also known as Ntoni Gambazza, la mamma or u Vanchelli, was a historically significant and some say charismatic 'Ndrangheta boss from San Luca in Calabria. He was the patriarch of the San Luca locale and the 'Ndrangheta capo crimine, the titular head of the organisation, although with little effective power. He reached the rank of vangelo, at the time the highest rank in the organisation.
Criminal career
Ntoni Pelle was born as the fourth child in a very poor family in San Luca. As an illiterate shepherd he rambled the desolate Aspromonte mountains around San Luca, Platì and Careri. In 1957 he was charged with burglary, but released for insufficient proof. A year later he was shot in the leg and in 1959 he was again acquitted, this time for illegal possession of a firearm. In 1961, he was arrested for murder, attempted murder and criminal conspiracy. Released because of expiration of detention terms in 1970, the Court of Appeal sentenced him to 11 years, 11 months and 11 days a year later. Pelle became a fugitive until he was arrested in November 1977.

About 560,000 people live in the metropolitan area, recognised in 2009 by Italian Republic as a metropolitan city.

Antonio is a Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese first name of Latin origin. When the Roman Empire became Christian, the name continued in popularity because of the many great saints who bore the name. Later, the name was spread all around the world as Christianity was introduced to other places (e.g. the Far East, the Americas, and Sub-Saharan Africa).

San Luca
San Luca is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Reggio Calabria in the Italian region Calabria, located about 100 kilometres (62 mi) southwest of Catanzaro and about 35 kilometres (22 mi) east of Reggio Calabria. The town is situated on the eastern slopes of the Aspromonte mountain, in the valley of the Bonamico river. At about 10 kilometres (6 mi) from San Luca up the mountain lies the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Polsi.
The Italian author Corrado Alvaro was born in San Luca in 1895. His hand-written notes and other personal belongings are now kept in the house where he was born by the Corrado Alvaro Foundation.
History
San Luca was founded on October 18, 1592, by the Prince Sigismund Loffredo and named after the saint of that particular day, Luke the Evangelist, who became the patron saint of the town. It was populated by refugees from the old town of Potamia, which was destroyed by landslides. San Luca became a comune in 1811, and was hit by floods and landslides in 1951, 1953 and December 1972.

A fugitive boss of a powerful ‘Ndrangheta Mafia clan in Italy was found hiding in a bunker under his home and forced by police to crawl out of his hole — on camera. Antonio Pelle, 54, known as “Mamma,” was named as the head of a Calabrian Mafia clan that bears his family name, which is based in the town of San Luca. Police traced Pelle to his own family home in the town of Bovalino, in the province of Reggio Calabria. In his house, concealed by a large cabinet, was a sealable cavity cut into the wall. Inside was a small bunker used as a hiding spot, containing a mattress, water bottles, toilet paper, a cooling fan and bottles for him to pee in. He was recaptured on Oct. 5, 2016, after escaping from a hospital in Locri in 2011.
Pelle was listed as one of Italy's 100 most dangerous fugitives but was in the process of being upgraded — he was to be listed on the Top 10 most dangerous fugitives list. Police said he had been sentenced to 20 years in jail for mafia association and drug trafficking. While he was on house arrest he disappeared.
Police traced Pelle to his own home in Bovalino, where he was found with a police camera capturing the ignoble situation. Pelle fled house arrest sentenced 20 years in prison as a result of a definitive sentence for Mafia association and drug dealing.
The Pelle-Vottari clan came to public prominence trough its bloody vendetta with local mob rivals, the Nirta-Strangio clan, that culminated in Germany in the notrious Duisburg massacre of August 15, 2007, when six people linked to the Pelle clan were gunned down outside a pizzeria in the German town of Duisberg..
The roots of the dramtic feud apparently stem from a fight at a San Luca carnival
in 1991 that led to two men from the Stangio-Nirta clan being killed. It led to a tit-for-tat feud. It continued to escalate when a Pelle clan member was paralyzed in a botched assasination attempt as he stood on the balcony wih his newborn child. In the revenge attack, Pelle-Vottari gunman shot up the home of Giovanni Luca Nirta, the Nirta-Strangio clan’s boss, on Christmas Day in 2006. Killed in the ensuing gunfire was the boss’s wife, Maria Strangio. Only a spectacular act of retaliation could be expected from such an outrage. Less than a year later, the Duisberg massacre took place, with two of the victims suspected of being involved in the killing of Maria Strangio.
Pelle was well aquainted with hidden bunkers. When he was last arrested in 2008, he was also found in an underground bunker, this one complete with a marijuana garden.

Tra quest’ultima cosca e la cosca Pelle-Vottari è in corso un faida culminata con la strage di Duisburg del 15 agosto 2007, dove furono assassinate sei persone. Per questa strage fu accertato il coinvolgimento anche di Antonio pelle che il 15 settembre 2011, mentre si trovava in ospedale a Locri per problemi di salute, in regime di arresti domiciliari, si rese irreperibile.

Dormi con un occhio solo, nel timore che ti piombino in casa per arrestarti. O, peggio, che la cosca avversaria uccida te. E anche i tuoi familiari. E' stato preso così, Antonio Pelle, 54 anni. Era nascosto nella sua abitazione di Bovalino, in un'intercapedine ricavata tra due stanze. L'ingresso del rifugio era davvero stretto, grande quasi come l'apertura di una piccola cassaforte domestica. Pelle vi si infilava non appena venivano avviati i controlli delle forze dell'ordine. E così non veniva trovato. Ma stavolta è andata diversamente. Ancora una volta è stato dimostrato che i boss della 'ndrangheta non si allontanano mai dalla loro zona d'influenza. Antonio Pelle, detto “La Mamma”, era latitante dall’aprile del 2011, quando fuggì dall’ospedale di Locri, dove era stato ricoverato per una grave forma di anoressia. Deve scontare una pena di 20 anni ed un mese di reclusione per associazione mafiosa, coltivazione illecita di sostanze stupefacenti, ricettazione, evasione e detenzione abusiva di armi e munizioni. Pelle sarebbe il capo dello schieramento criminale ritenuto responsabile della cosiddetta “Strage di Natale”, avvenuta nel 2006, in cui morì Maria Strangio. La strage si inquadra nel più ampio contesto della faida che, dal 1991, ha insanguinato San Luca e che ha visto contrapporsi le cosche Pelle, Vottari e Romeo da una parte e Strangio e Nirta dall’altra. Lo scontro è culminato poi nella strage di Duisburg, in Germania, il giorno di ferragosto del 2007, quando furono uccisi sei presunti affiliati della cosca Pelle-Vottari. Yes, it’s true. I don’t know the details, I don’t know why they chose the name stallion… Joking aside, the head coach and his staff trusted me a lot and I rewarded them with a lot of goals. If I hadn’t scored all those goals, I wouldn’t be here now.
Tell us the weirdest thing that happened whilst you were in the Netherlands
There are a lot… When I was signing for AZ, I was discussing what shirt number I could have with Louis Van Gaal. I love the number 9, be it 9, 19 or 18- I’m not afraid of fate. Anyway, I like the number 9 because it symbolizes the striker. Van Gaal told me: “9 is taken, 19 is too… Ok, 90 or 99”. I replied: “No, no please, not those high numbers. Which number are you going to give me?” He: “29 or 39”… And I said: “I don’t like 29 very much”. Van Gaal said: “Then 90 or 99”, and I reiterated my disappointment. Van Gaal is very strict and I eventually said: “Then I’m not signing for the club”. He got very angry, stood up and went to my agent and said to him: “How dare this guy to do something like that?” I then told him that I was joking. He is a great coach too.
You converted a panenka penalty at the U21-Euros in Holland in 2007. Did you draw inspiration from Totti, who did the same at Euro 2000 in Holland too?
Yes, it was great to watch his successful panenka penalty kick. He is obviously a specialist at it. I had a verbal wager with Montolivo and Chiellini and they told me: If you have the courage, then do it! The adrenaline of the game helped me stay calm. I felt more tense when I saw the penalty on TV after the game.
Which player inspired you to play football?
My father. He used to play in minor leagues. He got to play in Serie C, but if you speak to all his former colleagues, it looks like they were Van Basten or Rijkaard. They keep saying that it was a lot more difficult back then to make it to Serie C, you know, the usual stories. He used to show me all the videos of great players: Van Basten, the Brazilian Ronaldo, I grew up drawing inspiration from all the great players who used to play back then.
We know that you were a dancing champion and that this is a passion of yours. How did it start?
My mother loved dancing, my three-year-older sister also did it. It was a two-person-dance, so she needed a partner. I said that I would dance with my sister to make my mother happy. I even had to use heels because my older sister was taller than me. When I started playing for Lecce, I quit dancing because it was a great opportunity and my mother understood that.
What would you do in order to score your first ever goal for the senior national team?
I better not reveal that because I would be forced by my teammates to actually do it. I’ll give my all, but I don’t know what I’d do.

You moved to Southampton last July, how are you adapting to live in England? It’s ok now. The first month wasn’t very easy, even though I’m quite a positive person and don’t usually suffer from homesickness. But of course it’s better after those goals.
What are the differences between Southampton, Alkmaar and Rotterdam?
Alkmaar is a small town. They have their cheese trade show there. It’s particular, it’s funny and it’s a place where you can live well. As for Rotterdam, you can still see the damage from the war- they’re in a rebuilding stage. They have one of the biggest ports in the world. Operazione "Reale 5" I carabinieri del ros e del comando provinciale di Reggio Calabria stanno eseguendo un'ordinanza di custodia cautelare in carcere, emessa dal gip del locale tribunale, nei confronti di 26 soggetti legati alla 'ndrangheta nelle sue articolazioni territoriali operanti nei mandamenti jonico, tirrenico e metropolitano della provincia di Reggio Calabria e in Piemonte. Al centro dell'indagine, l'articolato circuito di alleanze della cosca pelle di san luca, funzionale alla gestione dei diversificati traffici illeciti ed al sostegno logistico dei latitanti, tra cui il noto boss antonio pelle "gambazza", arrestato dal ros nel giugno del 2009.
