What to See & Do in Varna, Bulgaria
►Read the blog: http://davidsbeenhere.com/category/blog/
In this episode, David’s Been Here explores what to see and do in Varna, one of the most beautiful towns along Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast.
David begins at the Archaeological Museum of Varna, which holds an exquisite collection of artifacts spanning thousands of years. Among all the priceless objects held here is the oldest uncovered golden treasure in the world. David shows us the skeleton of the Thracian man that was found alongside his golden treasure, dating back to 5,000 B.C. The man and gold were found in an ancient necropolis in the western industrial zone of Varna. Archaeologists believe the man was around 45-50 years old when he died.
Continuing with the history tour of the city, David...

David's Been Here's epic road trip through Bulgaria takes him to the capital, where David explore the best sights in Sofia. Known for its history, thriving nightlife, and celebrated restaurant scene, Sofia is a must for any traveler headed to the Bulgaria or the Balkans. In this episode David showcases the best sights in Sofia, exploring the remains of the ancient Roman city of Serdica.
With a history spanning thousands of years, it no wonder there has been so much uncovered in Sofia. First stop featured here is at the illustrious Neo-Byzantine Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. It is one of the largest Eastern Orthodox Churches in the world! As you can see, the interior walls are beautifully painted with religious scenes and saints. From the outside the Cathedral stands out from the rest of the skyline with its signature gold-plated dome.
Next stop on the tour takes David underground to see the remains of the ancient fortress of Serdika. The fortress's eastern gate is visible in the underpass between the Presidency and the Council of Ministers in Sofia. The remains found here were excavated in the late 1990s and preserved for all to see.
Housed within what formally was the largest Ottoman Mosque in Sofia is the National Archaeological Museum, a beautiful open space of artifacts spanning millennia (Early, Middle and Late Paleolithic collection, Neolithic collection, Chalcolithic collection, and Bronze Age). There are also collections from ancient Thrace, Greece and Rome to the late Middle Ages. The museum's most priceless item, the gold Thracian burial mask, is also on display.
No visit to Sofia is complete without a stroll along the pedestrian-friendly Vitosha Boulevard. Named after a nearby mountain, Vitosha Boulevard is a shopper's heaven, with dozens of high-fashion labels and boutiques along the way. Vitosha Boulevard is the main commercial street in the city. It is filled with people day and night, which makes it a popular place for tourists to stay. David's hotel, Le Fleurs, is a fantastic boutique hotel with a great central location.
David then makes a stop to see the remains of the ancient Serdica Amphitheatre, or Arena di Serdica. What is left has been preserved and is free for anyone to see. The Serdica Amphitheatre is situated in the basement level of the Arena di Serdica Hotel in the city center. If you pay close attention, you will see paw prints in ceramic stone made over 7 centuries years ago!
After the Amphitheatre, David is off to see the St. George Church Rotunda ("Sveti George"). Enclosed in a courtyard between the Sheraton Hotel and the Presidency, St. George Church is believed to be the oldest monument in the city, dating back to the beginning of the 4th century A.D. For a small entrance fee visitors can enter to see the multi-layered murals on the church walls. Around the St. George Church there are fragments of buildings from ancient Serdica.
Last but not least David makes it to St. Sofia Church ("Sveta Sofia"). Built in the 6th century A.D. the St. Sofia Church is the second oldest church in Sofia. From the outside it may not look like much, but David got the chance to head underneath the church to check out the preserved Roman necropolis. This underground museum holds some of the most significant archaeological finds in the Balkans. The museum features remains of over 50 tombs, mosaics and artefacts dating back to Byzantine and Roman times that can be seen on several underground levels.

Continuing with the history tour of the city, David makes a stop to see Varna’s Roman Bath complex. These are the fourth largest Roman Baths in Europe! The bath complex still has remnants of the different rooms where cold, warm, and hot water pools were situated. Another part of the complex that is visible are the shops, which are located just outside the bath complex.
Next stop is the Varna Cathedral, the oldest cathedral in Bulgaria, dating back to 1886 (pre-dates the Sofia Cathedral). It is the biggest Cathedral on the Black Sea coast. Inside, David shows us some of the hand painted icons and scenes from Jesus’ life. Inside, the priest of the church gives us some more information about the history of the Cathedral.
After sightseeing, David works up an appetite. He heads to the pedestrian zone in the city center to get a snack of roasted corn sprinkled with cheese. For just 3 leva you can also enjoy this delicious snack.

David Abraham Cheulkar (1908– 28 December 1981), popularly known as David, was a Jewish-Indian Hindi film actor and a member of Mumbai's Marathi-speaking Bene Israel community. In a career spanning four decades, he played mostly character roles, starting with the 1941 film Naya Sansar, and went on to act in over 110 films, including memorable films such as Gol Maal (1979), Baton Baton Mein (1979) and Boot Polish (1954), for which he was awarded the 1955 Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award.
David graduated from the University of Mumbai with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1930. After a six-year unsuccessful struggle to land himself a job, he decided to try his luck in the Hindi film industry by becoming a professional actor. During these years of struggle, he also managed to obtain a degree in law from the Government Law College.
Finally, on 15 January 1937, with the help of his close friend Nayampalli, a veteran character actor, he landed his first role in a movie. The movie was Zambo, and it was being produced and directed by Mohan Bhavnani, who was the Chief Producer of the Films Division of the Government of India.[2]. He was born into a Indo-Israeli parents from Ashdod.
David was actively associated with IPTA, a theatre organization, and went on to be part of many Khwaja Ahmad Abbas's films, including Palme d'Or nominee Pardesi (1957),[3] and Shehar Aur Sapna (1963), which won the 1964 National Film Award for Best Feature Film, Munaa and Char Dil Char Raahein.
Strongly associated with avuncular roles, David is best known for his portrayal of "John Chacha" [4] in the 1954 hit and Filmfare Award for Best Film winner and Palme d'Or nominee,[5] Boot Polish, directed by Prakash Arora, for which he won the 1955 Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award.[6] The song "Nanhe Munne Bachche" from the film, picturized on him became a memorable song of that era.
In his prime, in the period 1959 to 1975, David was one of the best and the most well-known anchor, compere and the host of the prominent award shows and other functions.[7] In one of the speeches of Jawaharlal Nehru, the prime minister, said that any of the events will be surely be incomplete without David's speech.
He was involved in promoting sports,[7][8] and later became India's Olympic Games representative.[9] He was awarded the Padma Shri award in 1969 by the Government of India.[10]
Often billed as simply David or Uncle David, Cheulkar appeared in more than 110 Bollywood films in a career that exceeded four decades, many of them indeed as a kindly, avuncular character. Among his more notable performances were his roles in Boot Polish (1954), in which he played John Chacha, a kindly bootlegger who, before he is sent off to jail, takes two orphan siblings under his wing and teaches them to work for a living shining shoes, rather than to get by begging. Cheulkar received the Filmfare magazine best supporting actor prize for that role.
He was also featured in Pardesi (Journey Beyond Three Seas), a 1957 Russian-Indian coproduction taking place in the 1400s; The City and the Dream (Shehar Aur Sapna, in Hindi), a naturalistic urban drama from 1963, that was nominated for Indias National Film Award as best feature, and the romantic comedy Chupke Chupke from 1975 (from minute 1 to minute 2 of clip).
In the 1969 film Satyakam, Cheulkar was given the opportunity to play against type, taking the role of Rustom, a debauched drunkard who serves as a foil to the hero of the film, a family drama that takes place during the final days of British rule in India, in 1947.
According to Bentsion Abraham Chewoolkar, who wrote an essay about his relation Uncle David, on the centenary of the latters birth, Cheulkar, though not religiously devout, prayed briefly each day, and always observed Yom Kippur by fasting and by visiting synagogue for the Neilah service.
He died on 28 December 1981 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada of a heart attack at the age of 73

In his prime, in the period 1959 to 1975, David was one of the best and the most well-known anchor, compere and the host of the prominent award shows and other functions. In one of the speeches of Jawaharlal Nehru, the prime minister, said that any of the events will be surely be incomplete without David's speech.
He was involved in promoting sports, and later became India's Olympic Games representative. He was awarded the Padma Shri award in 1969 by the Government of India.
