Sabir Khan is an Indian Sarangi player. He belongs to Sikar gharana (school) of music who have given several stalwarts to Indian classical music.

Early life

Born in Jodhpur, Rajasthan to sarangi player and vocalist Ustad Sultan Khan. He trained under his father and his uncle Ustad Nasir Khan. He is the ninth generation to take up Sarangi. His great grand father Ustad Azim Khan sahab was a court musician at Sikar Rajasthan.

Career

Khan started was exposed to music when he was six years old through his grand father Ustad Gulab khan. He shares the stage with his father and apart from solo concerts.

Khan is well known today for his mastery of sarangi. His technique of playing is rare combination of sur and laya (note and rhythm).

Khan performs with his father in concert and also solo. He has performed alongside artists such as Ustad Zakir Hussain, pt. Kumar Bose, pt. Anindo Chatterjee. He has also played with artists like gazal maestro Ustad Gulam Ali, Talat Aziz, Asha bhosle and The Hazards at a terrace gig near Citi Centre and recently played in the album of great Lata Mangeshkar.

Sabir people

The Sabir people or Savirs (sbr; Greek: Σάβιροι) inhabited the south-western Caspian Depression of Strabo's Sauromatae (though they are not to be confused with the Sarmatians) prior to the arrival of the Caucasian Avars from Abarshahr (Khorasan). They appear to have been an Oghur Turkic people, possibly of Hunnic origin. The name Sabir may be related to the name Siberia (which may itself be an alternative name for the Ugrian-speaking Mansi people) or with the far Eastern Hsien-pi.

The Sabir lived predominantly in the region of Azerbaijan (see Sabir, Azerbaijan) and Dagestan bounded on the east by the Caspian Sea, on the west by the Caucasus Mountains. Priscus mentions that the Sabir attacked the Saragur, Urog and Onogur tribes in 461 AD, forcing them north to the Volga once more, as a result of having themselves been attacked by the "Avars". In 515, having recovered from the Avar attacks of the 460s, they "advertised their power in a huge raid south of the Caucasus, in which they attacked Iranian and Byzantine lands with scrupulous impartiality". They eventually came into allegiance with Persia.

India's classical music tradition, including Hindustani music and Carnatic, has a history spanning millennia and developed over several eras. Music in India began as an integral part of socio-religious life.

Classical music

The two main traditions of Indian classical music are Carnatic music, which is found predominantly in the peninsular regions, and Hindustani music, which is found in the northern, eastern and central regions. The basic concepts of this music includes shruti (microtones), swaras (notes), alankar (ornamentations), raga (melodies improvised from basic grammars), and tala (rhythmic patterns used in percussion). Its tonal system divides the octave into 22 segments called shrutis, not all equal but each roughly equal to a quarter of a whole tone of Western music.

Hindustani music

The Hindustani music tradition diverged from Carnatic music around the 13th-14th centuries AD. The practice of singing based on notes was popular even from the Vedic times where the hymns in Sama Veda, an ancient religious text, were sung as Samagana and not chanted. Developing a strong and diverse tradition over several centuries, it has contemporary traditions established primarily in India but also in Pakistan and Bangladesh. In contrast to Carnatic music, the other main Indian classical music tradition originating from the South, Hindustani music was not only influenced by ancient Hindu musical traditions, historical Vedic philosophy and native Indian sounds but also enriched by the Persian performance practices of the Mughals. Classical genres are dhrupad, dhamar, khyal, tarana and sadra, and there are also several semi-classical forms.
