Die Anarchistische Abendunterhaltung - The Shepherd’s Dream
“There is no better way to listen to our music than lying down with your eyes closed”. That is accordeon player Roel Van Camp talking about ‘The Shepherd’s Dream’, the latest recording by DAAU. With five expansive instrumental tracks on its sixth full length album the band from Antwerp, Die Anarchistische Abendunterhaltung in full, takes the listener on a trip to pastures new.
‘The Shepherd’s Dream’ is DAAU’s first recording without violinist and co-founder Buni Lenski, who recently moved to Paris. “We decided not to replace the violin, since it was an extension of Buni’s personality”, cello player Simon Lenski explains. “It was a unique ingredient of our musical chemistry, so it definitely took us a while to come up with a new identity and sound. But the band is more about the stories we want to tell than about any specific instrument we use.”
DAAU was conceived around 1992 and since that moment onwards its music has basically been defined by what it is not. Classical? Rock? Folk? It is none of those things, yet it is all of those at the same time. The sextet that recorded ‘Domestic Wildlife’ in 2006 has now been reduced to a four piece. Double bass player Hannes d’Hoine is the new kid on the block: he only joined the band three years ago.
“After the pretty boisterous music on our previous album we were longing for a more subdued and intimate sound, with no drums nor electronics”, Simon Lenski says.. “Usually our approach is based on intuition, and this time we all felt the need to go back to basics.. It felt good to be in a room again, just the four of us, and to let our instruments do the talking. Our music has become more organic, probably because we have grown a little older and more mature. Some might say our wild days are over. Hence the new songs emanate a pastoral atmosphere. The way in which we express ourselves is more suggestive than ever.”
“Everything we do is still based on personal emotion”, clarinet player Han Stubbe claims. “But it goes without saying we are no longer the same people as when we started out. In the early days our approach was fairly chaotic, so quite a few of our records are lacking in coherence. On ‘The Shepherd’s Dream’ things have become much clearer and more defined. We have found a new kind of energy.”
In view of the new album the members of DAAU decided to all move in a common direction, which is a first for the group. Gradually it has slid away from fixed musical structures, consciously opting for free-form experiments based on a minimalist approach. “We are no longer tempted to layer note upon note”, Stubbe offers. “Initially, we were shocked by how quiet we sounded. It struck us as quite an extreme evolution. We did not back down though. Instead we decided to take it as far as we could. It was our way of making a statement.”
The five tracks on ‘The Shepherd’s Dream’ all came about during long improvisation sessions. DAAU just played without any preconceptions and recorded everything so they would be able to reconstruct the best bits afterwards. The idea was to treat the improvisations as real compositions and keep some of the spontaneity and freshness with which they were originally played. Afterwards however, the musicians spent a lot of time honing down the pieces, paying attention to the minutest details.
DAAU’s current acoustic sound was influenced by two other projects the band members were recently involved with. Stéphane Grégoire, founder of the French label Ici d’Ailleurs, asked them to participate in ‘The Dark Age of Love’, a tribute to British cult band Coil that was released under the moniker This Immortal Coil. On the album DAAU collaborated with the likes of Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, Yann Tiersen and Matt Elliott aka Third Eye Foundation.
“We were hardly familiar with Coil’s music to begin with”, Simon Lenski admits. “Their music is in a more electronic, even industrial vein and their songs are far removed from our own musical universe. Still it was a challenge to try and reinterpret or reinvent them with our own instruments. Doing this made us aware of our ability to cover other people’s work, so it dawned on us that we might as well try something similar with our own, initially improvised material. Recently we also wrote a soundtrack to ‘Archipels Nitrate’, a documentary about the ‘Cinematek’ in Brussels by film director Claudio Pazienza. That project made us realize that if you combine moving pictures with music, you do not want the latter to be too obtrusive. It also taught us to be more subtle and imaginative as musicians.”

Claudio Brook
Claudio Brook born Claudio Brook Marnat (28 August 1927 — 18 October 1995) was a Mexican actor. Born in Mexico City, Brook had a prolific career, making around 100 film and television appearances in his 38 years. He won two Ariel Awards. He died from stomach cancer in 1995.
For his work in motion pictures, Brook was inducted into the Paseo de las Luminarias.

The Shepherd
The Shepherd is a 1975 novella by Frederick Forsyth.
The Shepherd relates the story of a De Havilland Vampire pilot, going home on Christmas Eve 1957, whose aircraft suffers a complete electrical failure en route from RAF Celle (note: in fact, Celle had ceased to be an RAF station less than a month previously; see link) in northern Germany to RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk. Lost in fog and low on fuel, he is met and led (or shepherded) to a disused RAF dispersal field by the pilot of a De Havilland Mosquito fighter-bomber of World War II vintage, who has apparently been sent up to guide him in.
His attempts to find a rational explanation for his eventual rescue prove as troublesome as his experience. However, some time after he lands at the airfield—the fictional RAF Minton—he learns that his saviour was Johnny Kavanagh, a wartime RAF pilot who had been stationed at Minton and who had guided crippled bombers home. The Vampire pilot also learns that Kavanagh disappeared over the North Sea in his Mosquito on his last mission, on Christmas Eve 1943, exactly fourteen years before.

Simon Lenski
Simon Lenski is a cello player from Antwerp, Belgium. His main activity lies within the band DAAU which he co-founded in 1992.
As a cello player, he is a much sollicited guest musician for other artists and music groups, often together with his brother Buni Lenski. In 2004 he set up a collaboration with Swiss avant-garde cello player Bo Wiget. Together they released an album Die Vögelein schweigen im Walde.
In 2008 Simon Lenski composed the soundtrack for the movie Left Bank Linkeroever.
Simon Lenski composed the music for several theater plays.
In 2011 Simon Lenski composed and recorded the soundtrack for the short movie Motor of Dutch movie maker Simone Bennett. For this musical piece a special electric twelve string violin was built for him by experimental luthier Yuri Landman.

Luis Buñuel
Luis Buñuel Portolés (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈlwiz βuˈɲwel portoˈles]; 22 February 1900 – 29 July 1983) was a Spanish-Mexican filmmaker who worked in Spain, Mexico and France.
When Luis Buñuel died at age 83, his obituary in the New York Times called him "an iconoclast, moralist, and revolutionary who was a leader of avant-garde surrealism in his youth and a dominant international movie director half a century later". His first picture—made in the silent era—was called "the most famous short film ever made" by critic Roger Ebert, and his last film—made 48 years later—won him Best Director awards from the National Board of Review and the National Society of Film Critics. Writer Octavio Paz called Buñuel's work "the marriage of the film image to the poetic image, creating a new reality...scandalous and subversive".
Often associated with the surrealist movement of the 1920s, Buñuel created films from the 1920s through the 1970s. His work spans two continents, three languages, and nearly every film genre, including experimental film, documentary, melodrama, satire, musical, erotica, comedy, romance, costume dramas, fantasy, crime film, adventure, and western. Despite this variety, filmmaker John Huston believed that, regardless of genre, a Buñuel film is so distinctive as to be instantly recognizable, or, as Ingmar Bergman put it, "Buñuel nearly always made Buñuel films".

DAAU
DAAU (short for Die Anarchistische Abendunterhaltung) is a music group from Antwerp, Belgium. The band was founded in 1992 and borrowed its name from the novel Der Steppenwolf (1927) by Hermann Hesse.
The current line-up consists of Simon Lenski (cello), Roel Van Camp (accordion), Han Stubbe (clarinet) and Hannes D'Hoine (upright bass). In the course of DAAU's history, other musicians have joined the quartet for a limited period: Adrian Lenski (piano), Janek Kobalski (drums), Angélique Willkie (vocals), Fré Madou (upright bass) and Geert Budts (drums). On record, the band also collaborated with An Pierlé, Ya Kid K (Technotronic) and David Bovée (Think of One).
Career
In 1994 they debuted with their acoustic self-titled album on the label Jack&Johnny, which also released the first material by Zita Swoon (back then called A Beatband) and dEUS. For dEUS, DAAU also recorded a version of the cult-hit "Suds & Soda".
In 1996 Sony Classical signed the band, re-released the debut album, and released the follow-up We Need New Animals (1998). The album was recorded in the Spanish village Ronda and introduced vocals, electronics, drums and guitar to the sound of DAAU. The band was invited to support 16 Horsepower on tour in Europe. The record sold very few copies and Sony decided to shift the group to Columbia Records, which released their third album Life Transmission (2001) before sacking the group later that year. Even though record sales were once again below expectations, the group scored some small radio-hits and toured extensively in the Benelux and played for large crowds at Rock Werchter and Pukkelpop festivals.

With five expansive instrumental tracks on its sixth full length album the band from Antwerp, Die Anarchistische Abendunterhaltung in full, takes the listener on a trip to pastures new.
‘The Shepherd’s Dream’ is DAAU’s first recording without violinist and co-founder Buni Lenski, who recently moved to Paris. “We decided not to replace the violin, since it was an extension of Buni’s personality”, cello player Simon Lenski explains. “It was a unique ingredient of our musical chemistry, so it definitely took us a while to come up with a new identity and sound. But the band is more about the stories we want to tell than about any specific instrument we use.”
DAAU was conceived around 1992 and since that moment onwards its music has basically been defined by what it is not. Classical? Rock? Folk? It is none of those things, yet it is all of those at the same time. The sextet that recorded ‘Domestic Wildlife’ in 2006 has now been reduced to a four piece. Double bass player Hannes d’Hoine is the new kid on the block: he only joined the band three years ago.
“After the pretty boisterous music on our previous album we were longing for a more subdued and intimate sound, with no drums nor electronics”, Simon Lenski says.. “Usually our approach is based on intuition, and this time we all felt the need to go back to basics.. It felt good to be in a room again, just the four of us, and to let our instruments do the talking. Our music has become more organic, probably because we have grown a little older and more mature. Some might say our wild days are over. Hence the new songs emanate a pastoral atmosphere. The way in which we express ourselves is more suggestive than ever.”
“Everything we do is still based on personal emotion”, clarinet player Han Stubbe claims. “But it goes without saying we are no longer the same people as when we started out. In the early days our approach was fairly chaotic, so quite a few of our records are lacking in coherence. On ‘The Shepherd’s Dream’ things have become much clearer and more defined. We have found a new kind of energy.”
In view of the new album the members of DAAU decided to all move in a common direction, which is a first for the group. Gradually it has slid away from fixed musical structures, consciously opting for free-form experiments based on a minimalist approach. “We are no longer tempted to layer note upon note”, Stubbe offers. “Initially, we were shocked by how quiet we sounded. It struck us as quite an extreme evolution. We did not back down though. Instead we decided to take it as far as we could. It was our way of making a statement.”
The five tracks on ‘The Shepherd’s Dream’ all came about during long improvisation sessions. DAAU just played without any preconceptions and recorded everything so they would be able to reconstruct the best bits afterwards. The idea was to treat the improvisations as real compositions and keep some of the spontaneity and freshness with which they were originally played. Afterwards however, the musicians spent a lot of time honing down the pieces, paying attention to the minutest details.
DAAU’s current acoustic sound was influenced by two other projects the band members were recently involved with. Stéphane Grégoire, founder of the French label Ici d’Ailleurs, asked them to participate in ‘The Dark Age of Love’, a tribute to British cult band Coil that was released under the moniker This Immortal Coil. On the album DAAU collaborated with the likes of Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, Yann Tiersen and Matt Elliott aka Third Eye Foundation.

It struck us as quite an extreme evolution. We did not back down though. Instead we decided to take it as far as we could. It was our way of making a statement.”
The five tracks on ‘The Shepherd’s Dream’ all came about during long improvisation sessions. DAAU just played without any preconceptions and recorded everything so they would be able to reconstruct the best bits afterwards. The idea was to treat the improvisations as real compositions and keep some of the spontaneity and freshness with which they were originally played. Afterwards however, the musicians spent a lot of time honing down the pieces, paying attention to the minutest details.
DAAU’s current acoustic sound was influenced by two other projects the band members were recently involved with. Stéphane Grégoire, founder of the French label Ici d’Ailleurs, asked them to participate in ‘The Dark Age of Love’, a tribute to British cult band Coil that was released under the moniker This Immortal Coil. On the album DAAU collaborated with the likes of Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, Yann Tiersen and Matt Elliott aka Third Eye Foundation.

“There is no better way to listen to our music than lying down with your eyes closed”. That is accordeon player Roel Van Camp talking about ‘The Shepherd’s Dream’, the latest recording by DAAU. With five expansive instrumental tracks on its sixth full length album the band from Antwerp, Die Anarchistische Abendunterhaltung in full, takes the listener on a trip to pastures new.
‘The Shepherd’s Dream’ is DAAU’s first recording without violinist and co-founder Buni Lenski, who recently moved to Paris. “We decided not to replace the violin, since it was an extension of Buni’s personality”, cello player Simon Lenski explains. “It was a unique ingredient of our musical chemistry, so it definitely took us a while to come up with a new identity and sound. But the band is more about the stories we want to tell than about any specific instrument we use.”
DAAU was conceived around 1992 and since that moment onwards its music has basically been defined by what it is not. Classical? Rock? Folk? It is none of those things, yet it is all of those at the same time. The sextet that recorded ‘Domestic Wildlife’ in 2006 has now been reduced to a four piece. Double bass player Hannes d’Hoine is the new kid on the block: he only joined the band three years ago.

With a cast led by the great Claudio Brook (CRONOS, THE EXTERMINATING ANGEL) in a dual role as the mad Dr. Maillard as well as Raoul Fragonard, the film is as a dream, a ritual, a series of living tableaux. Describing the plot would be to cheapen the film, but it's worth noting no less than Leonora Carrington served as art director. We are honored to present this film in its longest known cut, with the original English dialogue, miles from public domain cuts. Those expecting cheap horror will be disappointed; those expecting clarity will be confused, those with eyes to see will behold a revelation.

“There is no better way to listen to our music than lying down with your eyes closed”. That is accordeon player Roel Van Camp talking about ‘The Shepherd’s Dream’, the latest recording by DAAU. With five expansive instrumental tracks on its sixth full length album the band from Antwerp, Die Anarchistische Abendunterhaltung in full, takes the listener on a trip to pastures new.
‘The Shepherd’s Dream’ is DAAU’s first recording without violinist and co-founder Buni Lenski, who recently moved to Paris. “We decided not to replace the violin, since it was an extension of Buni’s personality”, cello player Simon Lenski explains. “It was a unique ingredient of our musical chemistry, so it definitely took us a while to come up with a new identity and sound. But the band is more about the stories we want to tell than about any specific instrument we use.”
DAAU was conceived around 1992 and since that moment onwards its music has basically been defined by what it is not. Classical? Rock? Folk? It is none of those things, yet it is all of those at the same time. The sextet that recorded ‘Domestic Wildlife’ in 2006 has now been reduced to a four piece. Double bass player Hannes d’Hoine is the new kid on the block: he only joined the band three years ago.
“After the pretty boisterous music on our previous album we were longing for a more subdued and intimate sound, with no drums nor electronics”, Simon Lenski says.. “Usually our approach is based on intuition, and this time we all felt the need to go back to basics.. It felt good to be in a room again, just the four of us, and to let our instruments do the talking. Our music has become more organic, probably because we have grown a little older and more mature. Some might say our wild days are over. Hence the new songs emanate a pastoral atmosphere. The way in which we express ourselves is more suggestive than ever.”
“Everything we do is still based on personal emotion”, clarinet player Han Stubbe claims. “But it goes without saying we are no longer the same people as when we started out. In the early days our approach was fairly chaotic, so quite a few of our records are lacking in coherence. On ‘The Shepherd’s Dream’ things have become much clearer and more defined. We have found a new kind of energy.”
In view of the new album the members of DAAU decided to all move in a common direction, which is a first for the group. Gradually it has slid away from fixed musical structures, consciously opting for free-form experiments based on a minimalist approach. “We are no longer tempted to layer note upon note”, Stubbe offers. “Initially, we were shocked by how quiet we sounded. It struck us as quite an extreme evolution. We did not back down though. Instead we decided to take it as far as we could. It was our way of making a statement.”
The five tracks on ‘The Shepherd’s Dream’ all came about during long improvisation sessions. DAAU just played without any preconceptions and recorded everything so they would be able to reconstruct the best bits afterwards. The idea was to treat the improvisations as real compositions and keep some of the spontaneity and freshness with which they were originally played. Afterwards however, the musicians spent a lot of time honing down the pieces, paying attention to the minutest details.
DAAU’s current acoustic sound was influenced by two other projects the band members were recently involved with. Stéphane Grégoire, founder of the French label Ici d’Ailleurs, asked them to participate in ‘The Dark Age of Love’, a tribute to British cult band Coil that was released under the moniker This Immortal Coil. On the album DAAU collaborated with the likes of Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, Yann Tiersen and Matt Elliott aka Third Eye Foundation.
“We were hardly familiar with Coil’s music to begin with”, Simon Lenski admits. “Their music is in a more electronic, even industrial vein and their songs are far removed from our own musical universe. Still it was a challenge to try and reinterpret or reinvent them with our own instruments. Doing this made us aware of our ability to cover other people’s work, so it dawned on us that we might as well try something similar with our own, initially improvised material. Recently we also wrote a soundtrack to ‘Archipels Nitrate’, a documentary about the ‘Cinematek’ in Brussels by film director Claudio Pazienza. That project made us realize that if you combine moving pictures with music, you do not want the latter to be too obtrusive. It also taught us to be more subtle and imaginative as musicians.”
