"Wild Bill: Hollywood Maverick" (1995)
A documentary about the long-underrated talent of the late legendary action director William A. Wellman (1896-1975), one of Hollywood''s most distinguished journeymen helmers. William A. Wellman drew on his experiences as a fighter pilot during World War I to create a series of films about men of action as rugged, sentimental, raucous and tender as the director himself. He was equally noted for his off-screen battles with executives; and after building his career at Paramount and Warner Bros., Wellman vowed never to sign another long-term studio contract, and went on his way, refusing to take guff from anybody!

GUNSMOKE or HAVE GUN? A Word On Westerns with actor William Wellman, Jr
William Wellman, Jr, grew up in a Beverly Hills neighborhood surrounded by celebrities. As a teenager in the 1950's it was natural for him to enter show business. Television was cranking out westerns, so Bill, outfitted in a black hat, black boots, black shirt, black jeans, a low slung black holster and six-gun, had a series of 8x10 glossies made for auditions. Did it help him land any parts? You bet it did! Hear what Richard Boone had to say when Bill wore the black outfit to a "Have Gun, Will Travel" casting call. Bill got that part, one of several he did on the show. He also appeared on a couple of "Gunsmoke" episodes. How did these two popular western series and their stars compare? Who were some of the Wellman's celebrity neighbors? How old was Bill when he began dating neigh...

William Wellman Jr. at the NYS Writers Institute in 2015
William Wellman, Jr. is the author of Wild Bill Wellman: Hollywood Rebel (2015), a biography of his father, director William A. Wellman, a giant of the motion picture industry from the Silent Era to the 1950s, whom he talks about in this clip. Wellman’s 82 films include history’s first Academy Award winner for Best Picture, WINGS (1927), as well as such iconic films as A STAR IS BORN (1937), THE OX-BOW INCIDENT (1943), and THE HIGH AND THE MIGHTY (1954). Drawing on his father’s unpublished letters, diaries, notes and unfinished autobiography, the new book offers the first full portrait of the man. A notable character actor in his own right, Wellman Jr. is also the author of The Man and His Wings (2006), about the making of his father’s silent masterpiece.

William A. Wellman's Wings In A Danger Zone
Wings is a 1927 American silent war film set during the First World War that won the first Academy Award for Best Picture at the first annual Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences award ceremony in 1929. I decided to mix this movie with Danger Zone, a tune composed by Giorgio Moroder and performed by Kenny Loggins, that was featured in a certain similarly themed movie almost 60 years later. Enjoy!
