He is now forced to use his tools of reasoning separately and for one situation at a time. Had man been able to see past this hypnotic way of thinking, to distrust it (as did Einstein), and to resystematize his knowledge so that it would all be related horizontally, he would now enjoy the perfect sanity which comes from being able to deal with life in its entirety. Recently, it has become possible for man to chemically alter his mental state and thus alter his point of view (that is, his own basic relation with the outside world which determines how he stores his information). He then can restructure his thinking and change his language so that his thoughts bear more relation to his life and his problems, therefore approaching them more sanely. It is this quest for pure sanity that forms the basis of the songs on this album. (continued in YouTube annotations) A message from Psychedelicpiper: International Artists Records altered the tracklisting without the band's consent in 1966, placing the hit "You're Gonna Miss Me" at the start, and the rest as they saw fit. This has since become the common running order most fans know to this day. But I feel that in order to set the Elevators' legacy right, I should present this without any compromise of their artistic vision, the way the band wanted it. So to best reflect the Elevators' original intent in the making of this album (member Tommy Hall's intent, to be precise), here it is in its purest form - arranged as a concept album about the stages of psychedelic enlightenment, matching the order in which the tracks are described on the back sleeve liner notes. The band's original running order was finally represented through a stereo mix in the latest 'official' CD reissues. (This includes the "Sign of the 3 Eyed Men" box set.) Unfortunately, the quality in those releases suffers from excessive noise reduction, digital compression, and inferior sources. In other words, they sound like crap. This release, on the other hand, will be the only one you'll ever need.
