Judy Garland (June 10, 1922 – June 22, 1969), born Frances Ethel Gumm, was an American singer, actress, and vaudevillian. She was renowned for her contralto vocals and attained international stardom which continued throughout a career that spanned more than 40 years as an actress in musical and dramatic roles, as a recording artist, and on concert stages. Respected for her versatility, she received a Juvenile Academy Award and won a Golden Globe Award as well as a Special Tony Award. She was the first woman to win a Grammy for Album of the Year.
Garland was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in the remake of A Star Is Born and for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the 1961 film Judgment at Nuremberg. She remains the youngest recipient (at 39 years of age) of the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement in the motion picture industry.
After appearing in vaudeville with her two older sisters, Garland was signed to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer as a teenager. There, she made more than two dozen films, including nine with Mickey Rooney, and 1939's The Wizard of Oz. After 15 years, she was released from the studio and then gained new success through record-breaking concert appearances, including a return to acting, beginning with critically acclaimed performances.
Folmar Blangsted (1904–1982) was a Danish film editor who settled and worked in the United States]]. Blangsted edited around seventy films and television series during his career. He also directed two films, the westerns Westbound Mail and The Old Wyoming Trail (both 1937).
The Academy Awards, or "Oscars", is an annual American awards ceremony hosted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to recognise excellence in cinematic achievements in the film industry as assessed by the Academy's voting membership. The various category winners are awarded a copy of a statuette, officially called the Academy Award of Merit, which has become commonly known by its nickname "Oscar". The awards, first presented in 1929 at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, are overseen by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS).
The awards ceremony was first broadcast to radio in 1930 and televised in 1953. It is now seen live in more than 200 countries and can be streamed live online. The Oscars is the oldest entertainment awards ceremony; its equivalents, the Emmy Awards for television, the Tony Awards for theatre, and the Grammy Awards for music and recording, are modeled after the Academy Awards.
The 88th Academy Awards ceremony will be held at the Dolby Theatre on February 28, 2016 and hosted by Chris Rock. A total of 2,947 Oscars have been awarded since the inception of the award through the 87th. The 88th awards ceremony has become the target of a potential boycott, based on critics' perception that its all-white acting nominee list reflects bias. In response, the Academy has initiated "historic" changes in membership by the year 2020.

Mason was born in Huddersfield, in the West Riding of Yorkshire, to Mabel Hattersley (Gaunt) and John Mason. His father was a wealthy textile merchant. He was educated at Marlborough College, and earned a first in architecture at Peterhouse, Cambridge where he became involved in stock theatre companies in his spare time. Mason had no formal training as an actor and initially embarked upon it for fun. After Cambridge he made his stage debut in Aldershot in The Rascal in 1931. He joined The Old Vic theatre in London under the guidance of Tyrone Guthrie. In 1933 Alexander Korda gave Mason a small role in The Private Life of Don Juan but sacked him three days into shooting.

Children of a bootlegger in an extremely remote area of the U.S. have been orphaned when their mother died giving birth to the 7th of them at home and the distraught father fell off the roof of the house in a drunken stupor (information disseminated in the body of the film). The oldest child, desperate to keep the remainder of his family together, has managed to keep the fate of his parents secret from the surrounding community due to the nearly inaccessible locale, resources available to keep the farm running smoothly and well trained, vicious watchdogs. Arguably the best live version of the song by Judy Garland. One of the many great Harold Arlen tunes Judy made her own. And she truly nails it here.
From The Mike Douglas Show, aired in August of 1968. (Part 1 of 4) In this clip you can watch Judy singing this new Motown hit made famous by Stevie Wonder in the same year.
**NO COPYRIGHT INTENDED. I DO NOT OWN RIGHTS TO THIS ALBUM, BUT I DID PURCHASE IT** Act 1 of 2 of Judy Garland's live performance at Carnegie Hall in 1961 Recorded Live at Carnegie Hall on Sunday, April 23, 1961 at 8:30 PM
Another version of a Judy Garland original from 1954 film "A Star Is Born", music written by Harold Arlen (Over the Rainbow, Get Happy, Come Rain or Come Shine), lyrics by Ira Gershwin (I Got Rhythm, Embraceable You, But Not For Me). They made the song tailor-suited for Judy, and it have become one of her best remembered songs.
Judy Garland only performed "Over The Rainbow" twice during her many television appearances, which spanned 14 years. She performed it on her first TV Special, "Ford Star Jubilee" in the episode called "The Judy Garland Special" in 1955, and sang it to her children on The Christmas Edition of her weekly TV show "The Judy Garland Show" (1963). Here Judy is dressed up as the tramp character she played when doing a duet with Fred Astaire in the film 'Easter Parade'. Judy sings the song so sad and mournfully here it makes me cry, and it makes Judy cry too. We can only wonder what she was thinking about that got her so upset. Perhaps she was thinking about how different her life was compared to the song's lyrics. It's very upsetting. I love you Judy.

This is a rare version of Judy Garland performing Over The Rainbow at the Olympia In Paris, 1960. One can clearly observe that she is in excellent voice here. After this concert, she performed in several other European cities. Soon after arriving back home to America on New Year's Eve, Judy embarked on a 32-concert tour, achieving musical perfection in her legendary Carnegie Hall triumph. Enjoy! Thank You for your comments.
Judy sang "Over the Rainbow" in 1939 film The Wizard of Oz and it became since her signature song. A classic Academy Award-winning ballad was elected as number one of the "Songs of the Century" list compiled by the Recording Industry Association of America. Here we have a live rendition from 1943 Command Performance with improved audio.
From The Judy Garland Show #1 (1963)
Performed live at the London Palladium in April/May 1951. This is probably the first time that Judy performed this in concert. She later staged it exactly as she performed it in ''Summer Stock'' (1950) during her record breaking engagement at the Palace Theater in October of '51. The picture in the video isn't from the Palladium or Palace engagements, but from the 1955 Ford Star Jubilee TV special.
The novelty of Judy Garland: Live at the London Palladium is the spectacle of the great entertainer sharing the stage with her up-and-coming daughter. In November 1964 Liza Minnelli was not yet 20 and not yet a Broadway success. She looks it: the coltish, appealingly gawky girl is still pretty raw (at one point after a costume change she yanks off her earrings just before launching into a song), and Garland seems alternately proud of and bemused by her. The video is pretty raw, too, a rough black-and-white affair that can best be described as serviceable in quality. However, fans of this brand of showbiz razzmatazz will be satisfied with the duets between the women (especially trading verses on a medley of "Happy Days Are Here Again" and "Get Happy"). Judy opens the show with the reliable ...
Judy sang this song live on the set accompanied only by jazz pianist Dave Lee in the 1963 film "I Could Go On Singing" (her last movie). The song was recorded and filmed in one take on a movie set made to look like the London Palladium stage. This beautiful, haunting ballad fits the film's working title "The Lonely Stage" perfectly.
Using rare home movies, radio interviews and stills, Steve celebrates the anniversary of what has been called the greatest concert ever given by one of our most beloved performers, the fabulous Miss Judy Garland

Opening Night At The Palace, July 31, 1967
Here's another great version of Rock-a-Bye, which is one of Judy Garland's signature tunes and was a guaranteed showstopper in her stage act. In her introduction speech Judy is referring to her famous Carnegie Hall Concert in April 23, 1961. The double album "Judy at Carnegie Hall" was a huge success: it won incredible five Grammy Awards including Best Female Vocal Performance and Album of the Year (the first live recording and the first album by female performer to win the award). The album was charted for 95 weeks, 13 weeks at No. 1.
This special on Judy Garland [1922-1969] was produced in 1996.
From her gradual ascent to stardom in the 1930s to her death from a drug overdose at age 47 in 1969, former vaudeville baby Frances Ethel Gumm, aka Judy Garland, endured a string of personal and career ups and downs that continues to color her reputation as an icon whose tragedies outweighed her triumphs. This TV biopic, based on the first half of daughter Lorna Luft's book Me and My Shadows: A Family Memoir, attempts to humanize Garland's legend by presenting the singer/actress' story from an insider's point of view. Tammy Blanchard plays the young Garland, an MGM contract player with an overbearing mom (played by Marsha Mason) who helped push her daughter to stardom -- and, along with studio boss Louis B. Mayer (Al Waxman), into a lifelong addiction to booze and barbiturates. From her ea...

Here's Judy...not in the best physical shape, but her wit completely intact. She's so quick you sometimes miss the funny things she's saying. About 10 minutes in, she tells a hilarious story about submissions from a amateur songwriter. This was Cavett's brief 1968 ABC daytime show before his late-night show. When this one aired, it had already been canceled and this was among the last few installments, hence the reference to the curtains Judy admires being "available" soon. This seems to have been taped off the air in 1968 using very primitive technology. The audio portion gets "scratchy" on occasion because the broadcast signal, probably on a TV set using rabbit ears, was being distorted. Poor Judy was on her last legs, worn down by the business end of "the biz", as she calls it.

Vintage footage interview with Irv Kupcinet in September 1967. In this tumultuous decade for civil rights, Judy expresses a disdain for attacks that were made against homosexuals, especially her audience. She was always ahead of her time, an advocate for human rights. Her death and funeral, in June 1969, is believed to have inspired the Stonewall riots, the flashpoint for the modern Gay Liberation movement. The Rainbow is the universal symbol for the LGBT community. The psychology of Judy as a Gay icon is a matter of debate. Personally, I don't think human rights is about psychology ... there is no great mystery to understanding the fundamental need we all have to be treated with dignity & respect, forging the dream to be who we are. Judy understood. What is particularly interesting abou...

Was Judy Garland molested when she was 16 during the filming of The Wizard Of Oz? That is the new claim about the munchkins in the soon-to-be published book Judy And I: My Life With Judy Garland, by her late husband Sid Luft. "They would make Judy's life miserable on set by putting their hands under her dress," wrote Luft, who died in 2005. "They thought they could get away with anything because they were so small." According to reports, Luft does not name the actors who allegedly molested her.
