Can We

"Can We" is a song by American R&B trio SWV. It featured guest vocals by Missy Elliott and production by Timbaland and Elliott. The song was also released as the lead single from SWV's third album, Release Some Tension (1997), and the original soundtrack to the 1997 film, Booty Call.

At the time of its release, Billboard prevented album cuts from entering any Singles charts; however, because of its attachment to the Booty Call soundtrack, "Can We" was able to chart on Billboard Hot 100.

Outside the United States the song reached #1 on the New Zealand Singles Chart and peaked at #18 on the UK Singles Chart. To date, "Can We" is SWV's first and only international number one hit.

Music video

A music video for the single was directed by Jesse Vaughan and premiered on music video stations in March 1997. The synopsis of the video primarily focuses on SWV, dressed in cheetah-print attire, dancing in front of matching backgrounds with their love interests. Missy Elliott is also featured in the video, where she is seen dancing in a newspaper-covered background.

Todd Rundgren released his version on his 1978 album Hermit of Mink Hollow. This was the only hit single on the album, reaching #29 on the Billboard Hot 100. The lyrics describe a relationship to which Rundgren and the woman to whom he is singing have given great effort, but simply cannot work. Rundgren explains this, but wishes to part amicably, asking several times if he and his partner can "still be friends." The song is generally assumed to be about Rundgren's breakup with long-time companion Bebe Buell in 1977.

In 1994, this song made a prominent appearance in the movie "Dumb and Dumber". It also appears on the soundtrack for the 2001 film "Vanilla Sky", and the TV show "Nip/Tuck.

Todd Harry Rundgren (born June 22, 1948) is an American multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and record producer. Hailed in the early stages of his career for both his own material and for his production of other artists, supported by the certified gold solo double LP Something/Anything? in 1972, his career has produced a diverse and eclectic range of recordings often both as a solo artist and as a member of the band Utopia. Rundgren has often been at the forefront as a promoter of cutting edge recording technologies.

During the 1970s and 1980s, Rundgren engineered and/or produced many notable albums for other acts, including the Band's Stage Fright (1970), Badfinger's Straight Up (1971), Grand Funk Railroad's We're an American Band (1973), the New York Dolls's New York Dolls (1973), Hall & Oates's War Babies (1974), Meat Loaf's Bat Out of Hell (1977), and XTC's Skylarking (1986). Hermit of Mink Hollow

Hermit of Mink Hollow is Todd Rundgren's eighth solo album, released in 1978. It was his first album to be written and recorded entirely by Rundgren alone, though large portions of earlier albums also had been recorded alone (such as the first three sides of the double-LP Something/Anything).

The album is reminiscent of the artist's earlier, more pop-oriented records and marks a lyrical return to the subject of relationships (as in the single "Can We Still Be Friends"), as well as his views on social inequality (as in the songs "Bag Lady" and "Bread"). It remains one of his most popular albums.

Mink Hollow refers to a valley, and the road that runs through it, in Lake Hill, New York just west of Woodstock, NY. Rundgren recorded this album while living in a house on Mink Hollow Road. While many think that the hermit referred to in the title is Todd, it actually originated and refers to the character and events from a local legend centered on Mink Hill Road in Lake Hill, NY. The legend involved a 3-legged dog, a missing girl and an escaped mental patient hiding in the surrounding forested mountains. Yet, Rundgren himself acknowledged being a "studio hermit", working in an "insular little 24-hour-a-day think tank", and declared that prior to this experience he wasn't aware that "too much social interaction [had] affected [his] overall creativity."
