The Eiffel Tower (/ˈaɪfəl ˈtaʊər/ EYE-fəl TOWR; French: tour Eiffel [tuʁ‿ɛfɛl] listen) is a wrought iron lattice tower on the Champ de Mars in Paris, France. It is named after the engineer Gustave Eiffel, whose company designed and built the tower. Constructed in 1889 as the entrance to the 1889 World's Fair, it was initially criticized by some of France's leading artists and intellectuals for its design, but has become a global cultural icon of France and one of the most recognisable structures in the world. The tower is the tallest structure in Paris and the most-visited paid monument in the world: 6.98 million people ascended it in 2011. The tower received its 250 millionth visitor in 2010.
The tower is 324 metres (1,063 ft) tall, about the same height as an 81-storey building. Its base is square, 125 metres (410 ft) on a side. During its construction, the Eiffel Tower surpassed the Washington Monument to become the tallest man-made structure in the world, a title it held for 41 years until the Chrysler Building in New York City was built in 1930. Due to the addition of the aerial at the top of the tower in 1957, it is now taller than the Chrysler Building by 5.2 metres (17 ft). Not including broadcast aerials, it is the second-tallest structure in France, after the Millau Viaduct.
Tour Maine-Montparnasse (Maine-Montparnasse Tower), also commonly named Tour Montparnasse, is a 210-metre (689 ft) office skyscraper located in the Montparnasse area of Paris, France. Constructed from 1969 to 1973, it was the tallest skyscraper in France until 2011, when it was surpassed by the 231 m (758 ft) Tour First. As of February 2015, it is the 17th tallest building in the European Union. The tower was designed by architects Eugène Beaudouin, Urbain Cassan and Louis Hoym de Marien and built by Campenon Bernard.
Built on top of the Montparnasse – Bienvenüe Paris Métro station, the 59 floors of the tower are mainly occupied by offices. The 56th floor, with a restaurant called le Ciel de Paris, and the terrace on the top floor, are open to the public for viewing the city. The view covers a radius of 40 km (25 mi); aircraft can be seen taking off from Orly Airport. The guard rail, to which various antennae are attached, can be pneumatically lowered.
The tower's simple architecture, large proportions and monolithic appearance have been often criticized for being out of place in Paris's urban landscape. As a result, two years after its completion the construction of buildings over seven stories high in the city center was banned.
La Tour Montparnasse Infernale is a 2001 French comedy film directed by Charles Nemes and written by Kader Aoun, Ramzy Bedia, Eric Judor and Xavier Matthieu. When it came out in cinemas in Canada, it was translated into Don't Die Too Hard in reference to Die Hard, starring Bruce Willis.
Eric and Ramzy are working as window washers at the Montparnasse skyscraper in Paris. Thinking that he has a date set up with beautiful executive Marie-Joelle (who in reality hates his guts), Ramzy stays at work late while Eric hangs around with him. As a result, the pair witness a gang of terrorists seize the tower and take its late-night occupants (including Marie- Joelle) hostage. Knowing that only they can save the day, Eric and Ramzy swing into action.

Modern time wonder Tour D'Eiffel in Paris. Named after its creator, Gustave Eiffel, the Tour D’Eiffel has adorned the French capital of Paris for more than a century. It was erected in 1886 in record time and can be seen from almost every square and tiny lane in Paris. The eye is first drawn to its sturdy steel girders and weight-bearing transverse poles which are held in place by about 2.5 million rivets, an amazing technical achievement of its time. From the airy heights of the first viewing platform, there is a wonderful multi-directional panorama across Paris. On the higher viewing platforms the air is thinner but the views are increasingly spectacular. The Trocadero, Arc De Triomph, and Sacre Coeur, indeed, the whole of Paris are the distant earthbound stars of this visual experience ...

Five cities, three countries, twelve days, my mom, and me. All mashed together because I know no one is going to click through an entire photo album of this stuff. Blink and you may miss something, but that's kind of what it was like being there too. It was a very efficient trip. 7/7: SFO --> ORD Our original itinerary did not include Chicago. There was a crash at SFO the day before we left, so our flight was delayed at origin and we missed our connection from ORD. 7/7 - 7/8: Chicago, ORD --> AMS The next direct flight from O'Hare to Schiphol (Amsterdam) was a full 24 hours later, so we decided to make the best of it by exploring the cultural splendors of Chicago. In the morning, we took the 'L' downtown to the Chicago Art Institute. Sooo much famous stuff there. On our way back, w...
