In 1992, I visited Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania just as they were throwing off the shackles of communism and building independent democratic states. This documentary was shown on BBC and SBS Australia. In Estonia, I look at the new country's economic challenges. In Lithuania, the focus is on politics and in Latvia, on national identity I'm proud that this film is now salvaged from videotape and preserved as a historical record.

Only three countries (Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia) may be known as the Baltic States, but all the countries surrounding the Baltic Sea are known as Baltic Countries. As we have looked at the Nordic nations (and will look at the central European ones later!) this video will include the Russian Federation's flag and the Polish flag.

Baltic leaders have raised the alarm following Putin's defence of the 1939 Nazi-Soviet pact that divided eastern Europe and led to World War Two.
Lithuania's Foreign Minister called on Europe to wake up to Putin's recent remarks that there was nothing wrong with the Molotov-Ribbentrop treaty that led to the carving-up of Poland.
Linas Linkevicius told the UK's Guardian newspaper that Putin's statement was part of a bigger Russian plan to seek endorsements for its agressive and revisionist foreign policy. The minister goes onto say that Russia's land grabs and full use of military, economic and political aggression against Ukraine can not just be described as an alternative but 'simple divergence of views'.

Baltic states
The Baltic states, also known as the Baltics, Baltic nations or Baltic countries (Estonian: Balti riigid, Baltimaad, Latvian: Baltijas valstis, Lithuanian: Baltijos valstybės), are the three countries in northern Europe on the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea: Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The Baltic states cooperate on a regional level in several intergovernmental organizations.
While the indigenous populations of Latvia and Lithuania are known as Baltic people, those of Estonia are Finnic people. Another Baltic identity, Baltic German, began to develop during the Middle Ages after the Livonian Crusade.
Linguistic and historical considerations intersect in defining the concept of "Baltic states": for example, while Latvian is phylogenetically related to Lithuanian (both belonging to the Baltic group of the Indo-European language family) Estonian belongs to a completely different family – the Uralic languages. At the same time, despite considerable linguistic proximity, politically Latvia and Lithuania have gone different ways for most of their history, Lithuania at one point forming a commonwealth with Poland, giving rise to one of the largest countries in Europe at the time; while Latvia has shared most of its history with Estonia, both being governed by a Baltic German élite for more than 700 years. The Livonians (a nearly extinct ethnic group closely related to Estonians) have also participated in the ethnogenesis of Latvians: according to most accounts, the assimilation of (Uralic) Livonians by ancient (Indo-European) Baltic tribes formed the basis of what are today known as the Latvian language and Latvians.

This documentary was shown on BBC and SBS Australia. In Estonia, I look at the new country's economic challenges. In Lithuania, the focus is on politics and in Latvia, on national identity I'm proud that this film is now salvaged from videotape and preserved as a historical record.

From dominating the battlespace in war to reaching people in need during a humanitarian crisis, striking from the sea is often the most effective and efficient way. At annual exercise Baltops 2016, 15 NATO nations plus Finland and Sweden practised amphibious assaults from NATO Response Force 2016 flagship HMS Ocean in the Baltic Sea. Footage includes Royal Marines Commandos during a beach assault and soundbites from US and UK Navy personnel.
