Indian Premier League

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a professional Twenty20 cricket league in India contested annually by franchise teams representing Indian cities. The league, founded by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2008, is scheduled over April and May of every year. The title sponsor of IPL is Vivo Electronics, thus the league is officially known as the Vivo Indian Premier League.

In 2010, the IPL was broadcast live on YouTube. The brand value of IPL was estimated to be US$2.2 billion in 2014. According to BCCI, the 2015 IPL season contributed ₹0.5 billion (US$7.4 million) to the GDP of Indian economy.

Of the 11 teams to have competed since the league's first season, five have won the title at least once. Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings have won twice, while Rajasthan Royals and Deccan Chargers have won once. Mumbai Indians are the current champions having won the 2015 season. Until 2014, the top three teams in the tournament qualified for the Champions League Twenty20. However, the tournament was discontinued in 2015 and has been defunct since.

Mumbai Indians

The Mumbai Indians (abbreviated as MI) are a franchise cricket team representing the city of Mumbai, Maharashtra in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The team is one of two IPL franchises from the Indian state of Maharashtra, the other being Rising Pune SuperGaints.The team is one of the eight founding members of the IPL in 2008. They are one of the main teams in the city, together with clubs like the Mumbai cricket team and football club Mumbai City FC. The franchise is owned by India's biggest conglomerate, Reliance Industries, through its 100% subsidiary IndiaWin Sports. The primary home ground of the Mumbai Indians is the Wankhede Stadium. It is one of the most successful teams in the IPL.

The Mumbai Indians is one of the most successful teams in the IPL. The Mumbai Indians are currently captained by Rohit Sharma, and coached by Ricky Ponting. They won the 2011 Champions League Twenty20 after beating IPL rivals Royal Challengers Bangalore by 31 runs in the final. The team won its first IPL title, in 2013, by defeating Chennai Super Kings by 23 runs in the final, and then defeated the Rajasthan Royals by 33 runs to win its second Champions League Twenty20 title later that year.Rohit Sharma is the leading run scorer of the team while Lasith Malinga is the leading wicket-taker.

Kings XI Punjab

The Kings XI Punjab (abbreviated as KXIP) are a franchise cricket team based in Mohali, Punjab, that plays in the Indian Premier League. The team is jointly owned by leading Bollywood actress Preity Zinta, Wadia Group scion Ness Wadia, Dabur’s Mohit Burman and Karan Paul. The team plays its home matches at the PCA Stadium, Mohali. Since the 2010 IPL, they have been playing some of their home games at Dharamsala as well. The team holds the record for the longest winning streak in IPL.

History

In 2008, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) created the cricket tournament Indian Premier League based on the Twenty20 format of the game. Franchises for eight cities were made available in an auction held in Mumbai on 20 February. The team representing Punjab was bought by the Dabur group's Mohit Burman (46%), the Wadia group's Ness Wadia (23%), Preity Zinta (23%), and Karan Paul of the Apeejay Surendera Group (minor stake). The group paid a total of $76 million to acquire the franchise. On 10 October 2010 the franchise agreements for the Kings XI Punjab and the Rajasthan Royals were terminated by the league, but the termination was repealed.

ICC World Twenty20

The ICC World Twenty20 (also referred to as the World T20, and wrongly as the T20 World Cup) is the international championship of Twenty20 cricket. Organised by cricket's governing body, the International Cricket Council (ICC), the tournament currently consists of 16 teams, comprising all ten ICC full members and six other associate or affiliate members chosen through the World Twenty20 Qualifier. The event has generally been held every two years, although there is a four-year gap between the next two scheduled tournaments (2016 in India and 2020 in Australia). All matches played are accorded Twenty20 International status.

Five tournaments have so far been played, and no team has yet won the tournament on multiple occasions. The inaugural event, the 2007 World Twenty20, was staged in South Africa, and won by India, who defeated Pakistan in the final at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. The 2009 tournament took place in England, and was won by the previous runner-up, Pakistan, who defeated Sri Lanka in the final at Lord's. The third tournament was held in 2010, hosted by the countries making up the West Indies cricket team. England defeated Australia in the final in Barbados, which was played at Kensington Oval. The fourth tournament, the 2012 World Twenty20, was held in Asia for the first time, with all matches played in Sri Lanka. The West Indies won the tournament by defeating Sri Lanka in the final, winning its first international tournament since the 2004 Champions Trophy. The fifth tournament, the 2014 ICC World Twenty20, was hosted by Bangladesh, and was won by Sri Lanka, who became the first team to play in three finals.
