Syria

In this video, I visit a Syrian restaurant called Puerta De Syria in Granada Spain. Granada Spain has a very large Arabic population, some leftover from the time of the Moors and a new influx of refugees. The result is a very eclectic culture which incorporates many Arabic dishes into the Spanish cuisine. I was interested in trying out one of these places, and decided to head to Puerta De Syria. This restaurant's name translates into “Door of Syria” and they serve authentic Syrian cuisine. Their menu offers a variety of dishes including vegetarian options (such as falafel and roasted eggplant) to chicken and beef dishes. Since this is a muslim restaurant, all of the food is halal and no pork is served at this establishment. I decided to order a variety of dishes in order to expereince a true Syrian meal. I ordered falafel which are smashed garbanzo bean that are formed into patties and then fried. The falafels are served with fresh hummus and sliced veggies. Hummus is made using tahini which gives it a nice creamy consistency. All of the entrees at this restaurant come with a complimentary side of olives, Harissa (hot sauce), as well as Arabic flatbread. I also ordered a Syrian chicken and rice dish as well as some white beans. For a beverage, I ordered a Syrian two-color smoothie which was comprised of grape juice on the bottom and mangoes, bananas, and strawberries on the top portion. The smoothie was really yummy and tasted very healthy. The falafel was pretty good; I really enjoyed the hummus that it came with as it tasted very fresh. The bean dish was very delicious. The giant white beans looked strange to me as they had a black dash (and I had never seen anything like this before) but they tasted great! They were similar in flavor to fava beans. The Syrian bean dish was a mix of bell peppers and tomatoes tossed with local olive oil. My favorite dish was the chicken and rice dish. The rice had a beautiful orange/red hue to it from the spices (such as saffron) and tasted very savory. There were succulent raisins and nuts as well as fresh parsley mixed into the rice which made it taste very special. The chicken was cooked perfectly and I could taste all the different spices such as allspice, cardamom, paprika, sumac, and cinnamon. I definitely recommend checking out this restaurant if you ever find yourself in Granada Spain. The menu offers plenty of vegetarian as well as meat dishes for an affordable price (between 4 -6 EURO for an entree). The food is served quickly and the atmosphere is very tranquil. I think that this place was a great find as the prices were really good and the owner was very friendly.
