In the administrative divisions of France, the department (French: département, pronounced: [depaʁt(ə)mɑ̃]) is one of the three levels of government below the national level ("territorial collectivities"), between the 18 administrative regions and the commune. There are 96 departments in metropolitan France and 5 overseas departments, which also are classified as regions. Departments are further subdivided into 335 arrondissements, themselves divided into cantons; the latter two have no autonomy and are used for the organisation of police, fire departments and sometimes elections.
Each department is administered by an elected body called a departmental council (conseil départemental (sing.), conseils départemantaux (plur.)). Before March 2015, they were called general councils (conseil général (sing.), conseils généraux (plur.)). Each council has a president. Their main areas of responsibility include the management of a number of social and welfare allowances, of junior high school (collège) buildings and technical staff, of local roads and school and rural buses, and a contribution to municipal infrastructures. Local services of the State administration are traditionally organised at departmental level, where the prefect represents the government; however, regions have gained importance in this regard since the 2000s, with some department-level services merged into region-level services.
There's more to France than simple than the land between Spain and Germany. While this certainly the largest and most recognizable part of the country, there are also less well-known parts of the country, in all corners of the world, from the Caribbean, to South America, to the Indian Ocean and beyond. Renault’s design department has been hard at work refreshing its production-car range in the last few years, but the Paris motor show wouldn’t be the same without a decent concept from the French brand too. Luckily, senior VP of Renault Group corporate design, Laurens van den Acker, has obliged, with the unveil of a low-slung electric GT concept called the Trezor. Even luckier, Car Design News got a sneak preview of the concept last week and spoke with all the key designers behind the project… “The Paris motor show is the first time the public will see the complete production line-up of the cars my team has been working on,” van den Acker told CDN. “While the Trezor sows the seed for the next generation, it’s a sensitive car as we have something to lose now. It’s not the time for revoluti...

In a small village in Alsace, two teachers invite the parents of their pupils to come on Saturday mornings to present their languages and cultures. In the Education Department of the University of Strabourg (IUFM of Alsace), two researchers challenge the reluctance of schools to open up the linguistic and cultural diversity of their pupils and in particular those who speak migrant languages. The film shows how children, parents, teachers, students and researchers can contribute to a radical change of attitude. It tells the story of all these people and how they relate to their languages. Annual performance by Le Théâtre l'on Donne in the French Department at Western University (London Canada) March 2014. From Cervantes to Jean-Pierre Ronfard, Don Quixote travels through the ages. Overcome by his hyperactive imagination, our hero transform...
