Paris (UK: /ˈpærɪs/ PARR-iss; US: i/ˈpɛərɪs/ PAIR-iss; French: [paʁi]) is the capital and most populous city of France. Situated on the Seine River, in the north of the country, it is in the centre of the Île-de-France region, also known as the région parisienne, "Paris Region". The City of Paris has an area of 105 km² (41 mi²) and a population of 2,241,346 (2014 estimate) within its administrative borders essentially unchanged since 1860.
Since the 19th century, the built-up area of Paris has grown far beyond its administrative borders; together with its suburbs, the whole agglomeration has a population of 10,550,350 (Jan. 2012 census).Paris' metropolitan area spans most of the Paris region and has a population of 12,341,418 (Jan. 2012 census), or one-fifth of the population of France. The administrative region covers 12,012 km² (4,638 mi²), with approximately 12 million inhabitants as of 2014, and has its own regional council and president.
Paris was founded in the 3rd century BC by a Celtic people called the Parisii, who gave the city its name. By the 12th century, Paris was the largest city in the western world, a prosperous trading centre, and the home of the University of Paris, one of the first in Europe. In the 18th century, it was the centre stage for the French Revolution, and became an important centre of finance, commerce, fashion, science, and the arts, a position it still retains today.

Take a tour of Paris Pantheon in Paris, France - part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats. Some of France's greatest politicians, thinkers, and soldiers are eternally housed in the Pantheon in Paris. A stunning neoclassical achievement, the Pantheon began as a promise by King Louis the 15th to replace a deteriorating church. The reconstructed building, originally a house of worship built to honor the relics of St. Genevieve, was completed in 1790. It became a meeting place of France's intellectuals and the site of important experiments, such as Foucault's pendulum. The Pantheon has been the burial grounds for Frenchmen like Voltaire, Victor Hugo, and Alexander Dumas since it was first created. The incredibly detailed interior and impressi...

First established by the Celts, next used strategically by the Romans, then it served the extravagant lifestyle of the Sun King, Louis XIV until it became a hotbed of Revolution. Champs-Élysée is surely one of the most beautiful avenues in the world. It has wide boulevards, shady corners, ambient street cafes and classic Parisian buildings that are decorated with flowers. Since 1873, the Palais de l'Élysée has been the residence of the French President. Sebastien Tellier returns in majesty with a stunning album, recorded between Paris and Rio de Janeiro in 2013. Our favorite bearded musician has collaborated with arranger Arthur Verocai, cult figure in the cariocan music scene, and author of the recently reissued "Verocai Arthur" (1972). In addition to Rio, Sebastian went to Jean-Michel Jarre, Bernard Estardy (EPC) or that of Philippe Zdar studios. "For this album I wanted to rewrite my childhood. I chose to locate this adventure in Brazil, splendor and joy to the soul eternally childlike." In this hour-long travel special, we explore the "Eternal City" of Rome, a grand and ancient metropolis rich with exquisite art, vibrant culture, and centuries of history. We trace the rise and fall of classical Rome, meander through the heart of Bernini's Baroque Rome, and make a pilgrimage to the Vatican. Then, we follow Rick as he uncovers the charms of hidden neighborhoods filled with character and energy, enjoys a Roman feast, and mixes and mingles with the locals during an early-evening stroll through the city's romantic nightspots.

We'll also marvel at the glass and statuary of Chartres Cathedral and dine like kings. | © 2014 Rick Steves' Europe At http://www.ricksteves.com, you'll find money-saving travel tips, small-group tours, guidebooks, TV shows, radio programs, podcasts, and more on this destination.
