Modern art includes artistic work produced during the period extending roughly from the 1860s to the 1970s, and denotes the style and philosophy of the art produced during that era. The term is usually associated with art in which the traditions of the past have been thrown aside in a spirit of experimentation. Modern artists experimented with new ways of seeing and with fresh ideas about the nature of materials and functions of art. A tendency away from the narrative, which was characteristic for the traditional arts, toward abstraction is characteristic of much modern art. More recent artistic production is often called contemporary art or postmodern art.
Modern art begins with the heritage of painters like Vincent van Gogh, Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin, Georges Seurat and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec all of whom were essential for the development of modern art. At the beginning of the 20th century Henri Matisse and several other young artists including the pre-cubists Georges Braque, André Derain, Raoul Dufy, Jean Metzinger and Maurice de Vlaminck revolutionized the Paris art world with "wild", multi-colored, expressive landscapes and figure paintings that the critics called Fauvism. Henri Matisse's two versions of The Dance signified a key point in his career and in the development of modern painting. It reflected Matisse's incipient fascination with primitive art: the intense warm color of the figures against the cool blue-green background and the rhythmical succession of the dancing nudes convey the feelings of emotional liberation and hedonism.

How did the beautiful come to be reviled and bad taste come to be celebrated? Again and again people fool so-called 'expert' with works done by novices, toddlers, or even chimpanzees. The Baltic in Newcastle is a fine gallery, Unfortunately, they very seldom find anything to put in it worth looking at, let alone journeying any distance to see. People appreciate effort, skill, and an attempt to please or at least be understood. Works of art that clearly have taken no skill, time, effort, or care to create are an insult to the gallery viewer. Clearly, I am not saying that ALL modern (or 'c...

Over the last 25 years, Linda Leonard Schlenger has amassed one of the most important collections of contemporary ceramics in the country. This exhibition features over 80 objects from the Schlenger collection by leading 20th-century ceramicists—including John Mason, Jim Melchert, Kenneth Price, Lucie Rie, and Peter Voulkos—alongside works in other media from the Yale University Art Gallery’s permanent collection by artists such as Hans Hofmann, Willem de Kooning, Isamu Noguchi, Mark Rothko, and Edward Ruscha. Although critically lauded within the studio-craft movement, works by these ceramicists are only now coming to be recognized as integral to the wider field of contemporary art. By interspersing these exceptional examples of the medium with other objects from this period, including pa...

To mark the opening of the much anticipated, revamped Tate Modern, with its new Switch building more than doubling the amount of space it has on London's Bankside, a look behind the scenes to reveal new director Frances Morris's drive to increase the amount of international, female and performance-related work to make it a museum for the 21st century. With exclusive access to the Tate's 'secret stores', where some of the new work will come from, members of its congregation explain how they feel the £260m transformation of this cathedral to contemporary art is money well spent, while others think its expansion in a time of recession is sacrilegious. K-hole at the DalÃ
Seeing the unknown
Well it might have been a molly
'Cause my mind's being blown
Take the escalator to the next floor
Such a strong sedator, now I can't find the door
You turn around and you don't know where you've been
You look up at the glass dome and the room beings to spin
Let's go out and find the ocean 'cause I think we need a swim
Turn around, start it over, let's begin
Like the minis at the Louvre
Spinning down the aisle
And the paintings of the Louvre
Now i'm feeling very smart
Like a 3-D picture, stereo's gone
It's a total light picture, kaleidoscope
You turn around and you don't know where you've been
You look up at the glass dome and the room beings to spin
Let's go out and find the ocean 'cause I think we need a swim
Turn around, start it over, let's begin
And the k-hole at the DalÃ
Seeing the unknown
Well it might have been a molly
'Cause my mind's being blown
You turn around and you don't know where you've been
You look up at the glass dome and the room beings to spin
Let's go out and find the ocean 'cause I think we need a swim
