Bahrain ( البحرين ), officially the Kingdom of Bahrain (Arabic: مملكة البحرين About this sound Mamlakat al-Baḥrayn), is a small island country situated near the western shores of the Persian Gulf. It is an archipelago with Bahrain Island, the largest land mass, at 55 km (34 mi) long by 18 km (11 mi) wide. Saudi Arabia lies to the west and is connected to Bahrain by the King Fahd Causeway while Iran lies 200 km (124 mi) to the north across the Persian Gulf. The peninsula of Qatar is to the southeast across the Gulf of Bahrain. The population in 2010 stood at 1,234,571, including 666,172 non-nationals.[7]
Bahrain is the site of the ancient land of the Dilmun civilisation.[8] Bahrain was one of the earliest areas to convert to Islam in 628 AD. Following a period of Arab rule, Bahrain was occupied by the Portuguese in 1521, who in turn were expelled in 1602 by Shah Abbas I of the Safavid dynasty under the Persian Empire. In 1783, the Bani Utbah clan captured Bahrain from Nasr Al-Madhkur and has since been ruled by the Al Khalifa royal family, with Ahmed al Fateh as Bahrain's first hakim. In the late 1800s, following successive treaties with the British, Bahrain became a protectorate of the United Kingdom. In 1971, Bahrain declared independence. Formerly a state, Bahrain was declared a Kingdom in 2002. Since early 2011, the country has experienced sustained protests and unrest inspired by the regional Arab Spring, particularly by the majority Shia population.[9]
Bahrain has the first post-oil economy in the Persian Gulf.[10] Since the late 20th century, Bahrain has invested in the banking and tourism sectors.[11] The country's capital, Manama, is home to many large financial structures. Bahrain has a high Human Development Index (ranked 48th in the world) and was recognised by the World Bank as a high income economy.

Bahrain has been one of the Gulf’s most important commercial crossroads for over 4,000 years.
The word Bahrain means ‘two seas’ in Arabic, indicating how the country’s geographic position as a collection of islands has been important throughout its history.

In 2002, Bahrain became a constitutional monarchy, and a democratically elected parliament was established. This marked the beginning of a period of on-going reform. The country also has an established legal framework and respected regulatory system.
Manama is the capital of Bahrain and also its largest city. Manama enjoys a distinct reputation as a tourism and cultural hub regionally and internationally, as shown by its selection as the Capital of Arab Culture in 2012, and Capital of Arab Tourism in 2013, and Capital of Asian Tourism in 2014.

Central Business District, Manama
The Central Business District (CBD) is located in central Manama, the capital of Bahrain. Many of the city's hotels, office buildings, shops and restaurants are located in the CBD. It lies along the northern coast of Manama.
The CBD is considered one of the best shopping areas in the city; it has the Manama Souq (market, in Arabic), located near the Bab Al Bahrain (the Gateway of Bahrain). The old souq has a variety of goods, from spices, condiments, textiles, electronics to jewelry.
In addition, the Bahrain World Trade Centre and the Bahrain Financial Harbour; this has Bahrain's tallest towers, and many of the country's largest banks and companies are also situated in the CBD.
Moda Mall Bahrain is a high-end shopping complex in the ground floor of Bahrain World Trade Centre. Manama
Manama (Arabic: المنامة Al Manāma) is the capital and largest city of Bahrain, with an approximate population of 157,000 people. Long an important trading center in the Persian Gulf, Manama is home to a very diverse population. After periods of Portuguese and Persian control and invasions from the ruling dynasties of Saudi Arabia and Oman, Bahrain established itself as an independent nation during the 19th century period of British hegemony.
Although the current twin cities of Manama and Muharraq appear to have been founded simultaneously in the 1800s, Muharraq took prominence due to its defensive location and was thus the capital of Bahrain until 1921. Manama became the mercantile capital, and was the gateway to the main Bahrain Island. In the 20th century, Bahrain's oil wealth helped spur fast growth and in the 1990s a concerted diversification effort led to expansion in other industries and helped transform Manama into an important financial hub in the Middle East. Manama was designated as the capital of Arab culture for the year 2012 by the Arab League.

In 1783, the Bani Utbah clan captured Bahrain from Nasr Al-Madhkur and has since been ruled by the Al Khalifa royal family, with Ahmed al Fateh as Bahrain's first hakim. In the late 1800s, following successive treaties with the British, Bahrain became a protectorate of the United Kingdom. In 1971, Bahrain declared independence. Formerly a state, Bahrain was declared a Kingdom in 2002. Since early 2011, the country has experienced sustained protests and unrest inspired by the regional Arab Spring, particularly by the majority Shia population.[9]
Bahrain has the first post-oil economy in the Persian Gulf.[10] Since the late 20th century, Bahrain has invested in the banking and tourism sectors.[11] The country's capital, Manama, is home to many large financial structures. Bahrain has a high Human Development Index (ranked 48th in the world) and was recognised by the World Bank as a high income economy.

This is my first command being in the Navy so I wanted to share my experience with you guys since I'll be here for the next two years. Bahrain center for Human Rights warns agaisnt US arms sales to Manama
A Bahraini rights group has voiced serious concerns over a recent US government decision to renew arms sales to Manama as it continues repressing its critics. The Bahrain Center for Human Rights warned of profound consequences, stressing that there are no ways to guarantee those arms would not be used to crush pro-democracy movements. 12 people have been arrested and charged with unlawful assembly in Bahrain, as Manama continues its crackdown on peaceful protests in the Persian Gulf kingdom. The Bahrain Institute for Rights and Democracy said six of the 12 detainees were clerics. It added that those arrested had staged a demonstration near the home of top Shia cleric Sheikh Isa Qassim in the village of Diraz. Officials say two Asian street cleaners were killed.
The violence prompted mutual accusations from activists and a government trying to put down a mostly Shi'ite pro-democracy uprising.
The Interior Ministry said the bombs were homemade and described the blasts as "terrorist acts" - its term for violence by opposition activists.
Opposition politician Matar Matar of the Shi'ite party Wefaq said he doubted that opposition activists were behind Monday's attacks, noting that leading Shi'ite clerics had called on followers to avoid escalating the conflict with the government.
Injuries to protesters or police are relatively common in the 21-month-old uprising.
Attacks on the public, however, have been rare on the Gulf island, where the Sunni Muslim Al Khalifa dynasty rules over a majority Shi'ite population.
The BNA agency said the explosions took place between 4:30 and 9:30 a.m. (0130-0630 GMT) in the Qudaibiya and Adliya districts of Manama.
One of the attacks took place outside a cinema, where one of the street cleaners died when he kicked a package that blew up.
A witness said that blast caused little material damage, suggesting it had not been large.
Police chief Tariq Hasan Essa confirmed that two Asian men were killed.

"We are giving this statement in this news conference about the terror act which took place this morning in the Adliya, Gudaibiya and Hoora areas of the capital. Two Asian men were killed in the area of Gudaibiya. One person was critically injured in Adliya."
It was reported locally later in the evening that the third person also died from his injuries.

King Hamad has ordered the release of opposition and political prisoners. A Martyrs March is announced that includes a funeral of one the protesters killed earlier this week, along with the expected arrival of Hasan Mushaima, the leader of the opposition group Haq movement. Both pro-government and anti-government protests were reported.
Reportedly, over 100,000 anti-government protesters, more than 12% of the population, were out on the streets, while some media agencies claimed that this anti-goverment rally was more than 280,000 since the march extended up to 3 kilometers long.
21 February:
The state's Bahrain News Agency, a branch of Bahrain's Ministry of Culture and Information, claims that 300,000 Bahraini residents (more than 50% of the local population; Bahrain local population is 568,000), has gathered in the grounds opposite Al-Fateh Center in Manama to support the ruling monarchy.
It was announced that the 2011 Bahrain Grand Prix would be postponed from its original date on 13 March to a later date.
20 February:
Protesters camped out through the night at the Pearl Roundabout for the night after soldiers were ordered to withdraw. Food and electricity were provided to protesters.
19 February:
The military and then the police withdrew from the capital by orders of the government. Thousands of protesters were then able to return to the Pearl Roundabout.
18 February:
On 18 February, government forces used live ammunition against protesters, mourners and news reporters, with multiple casualties reported. Security forces fired on medics loading the wounded into ambulances. At least five people died and at least 66 were wounded. The protesters moved into the centre of Manama from the funerals of protesters killed in a security crackdown earlier in the week, and then were fired on by Bahraini police. Some protesters held their hands up high and shouted, "Peaceful! Peaceful!"
17 February:
At about 3:00 am local time, riot police moved in and, using tear gas and batons, dispersed thousands of anti-government protesters in Pearl Square. According to the opposition, three people died in the police operation while 231 sustained injuries. Sporadic clashes broke out around Manama hours after the riot police's attack on the makeshift encampment in the centre of the city. There were also reports of dozens of armoured vehicles moving towards the Pearl Roundabout. According to an Al Jazeera correspondent, hospitals in Manama were full of people injured during the police raid, including "doctors and emergency personnel who were overrun by the police while trying to attend to the wounded."
Saeed al-Shahabi, a leader of the opposition in London, warned the Saudi National Guard against interfering in the country. Reportedly, tens of thousands of Saudi military had entered Bahrain in 1995 to quell an uprising. Later in the day, a state of emergency was imposed.
16 February:
Thousands of protestors continued to occupy Pearl Roundabout. A funeral procession for the protestor killed on 15 February was held, without any police interference. The protests size had increased by several hundred on this day, and parliament members announced their intentions to remove the royal family from their office positions.

A Bahraini rights group has voiced serious concerns over a recent US government decision to renew arms sales to Manama as it continues repressing its critics.
The Bahrain Center for Human Rights warned of profound consequences, stressing that there are no ways to guarantee those arms would not be used to crush pro-democracy movements. It also warned that lack of transparency within Bahrain’s defense force system made the situation more alarming. The warning comes following Obama administration’s controversial decision on June 29 to resume arms sales to the Bahraini military. The sales were halted following Bahrain’s deadly crackdown on pro-democracy mass protests. The Human Rights Watch also slammed the move, saying the decision was made based on a seriously flawed assessment of Bahrain’s human rights situation.

The demonstrators in the town of Diraz also warned the ruling Al Khalifah regime that Sheikh Qassim is their red line. Reports out of Diraz say security forces have sealed off the area where ayatollah Qassim's house is located. Overnight protests have turned violent in the town of Bilad al-Qadim after security forces shot teargas at the demonstrators. Similar protests have been staged in several other towns including Buri and Sitra. Meanwhile Iran’s foreign ministry has condemned Manama’s move as extrajudicial saying such measures destroy any chance of national reconciliation through dialog and peaceful means. The ministry further urged Manama to resolve the crisis through national dialog.
Iran has condemned the Bahraini government for revoking the citizenship of top Shia opposition cleric Sheikh Issa Ghassem.
Meanwhile, a top commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps has warned the Bahraini regime of serious repercussions of the decision. Major General Qasem Solemani said the al-Khalifah regime is overstepping a redline.
The United States has also strongly criticized the Bahraini regime over its move to strip the nationality of the head of the country’s Shia community Sheikh Isa Qassim.

12 people have been arrested and charged with unlawful assembly in Bahrain, as Manama continues its crackdown on peaceful protests in the Persian Gulf kingdom.
The Bahrain Institute for Rights and Democracy said six of the 12 detainees were clerics. It added that those arrested had staged a demonstration near the home of top Shia cleric Sheikh Isa Qassim in the village of Diraz. Sheikh Qassim’s citizenship was revoked in June after Manama accused him of promoting sectarian strife. This sparked mass protests in Bahrain. Twenty doctors have gone on trial in Bahrain accused of taking over a hospital during the anti-government protests in March and using it as a rebel base.
Their families say they were tortured into making false confessions.
The doctors return to court tomorrow and Middle East correspondent Rupert Wingfield-Hayes is one of only two foreign journalists allowed to watch the trial.
He sent this report from the capital of Bahrain, Manama.
