Sayyid Akhtar Hussein Rizvi, known as Kaifi Azmi (Hindustani: कैफ़ी आज़मी, کیفی اعظمی; 14 January 1919 – 10 May 2002) was an Indian Urdu poet. He will always be remembered who brought Urdu literature to Indian motion pictures. Together with Pirzada Qasim, Jon Elia and others he participated in the most memorable mushairas of the twentieth century.
Azmi was born into a Muslim family in the village of Mizwaa(n) in Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh, India.
Azmi was married to Shaukhat Azmi. They have a daughter, Shabana Azmi (An Indian Actress of film, television and theatre) and a son, Baba Azmi (Indian Cinematographer).
Shaukat Kaifi (also credited as Shaukat Azmi) is an Indian Social activist, noted theater and film actress. She was married to poet, Kaifi Azmi, and through her career associated with the Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA), the Progressive Writers Association and Prithvi Theatre.
Shaukhat Kaifi was born into a Muslim family in Hyderabad State in a noble family.
Shaukhat Kaifi married noted Urdu language poet, Kaifi Azmi. They had two children together, Shabana Azmi (b. 1950), a renowned actress of Indian cinema and Baba Azmi, a noted cameraman, and is part of the Akhtar-Azmi family. She is an integral part of the Indian People's Theatre Association, and member of the Communist Party of India. She played the role of Khannum jaan in Umrao Jaan, the same role was played by her daughter Shabana Azmi in the 2006 remake of the same name.
She wrote a biography, Kaifi and I, which has also been adapted to a play Kaifi aur Main. It premiered in Mumbai in 2006 on the 4th death anniversary of Kaifi Azmi.
Shabana Azmi (born 18 September 1950) is an Indian actress of film, television and theatre. An alumna of the Film and Television Institute of India of Pune, she made her film debut in 1974 and soon became one of the leading actresses of Parallel Cinema, a Bengali new-wave movement known for its serious content and neo-realism and received government patronage during the times. Regarded as one of the finest actresses in India, Azmi's performances in films in a variety of genres have generally earned her praise and awards, which include a record of five wins of the National Film Award for Best Actress and several international honours. She has also received four Filmfare Awards.
Azmi has appeared in over 120 Hindi and Bengali films in both mainstream and independent cinema, and since 1988 she has acted in several foreign projects. Numerous of her films have been cited as a form of progressivism which portrays Indian society, its customs and traditions. In addition to acting, Azmi is a social and women's rights activist. She is the wife of poet and screenwriter Javed Akhtar. She is a Goodwill Ambassador of the United Nations Population Fund (UNPFA) which seeks to spread contraception and abortion in India in order to limit that country's population. In appreciation of Azmi's life and works, the Congress party's government gave her a nominated (unelected) membership of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of parliament.

A recent evening saw the launch of Shaukat Azmi's book Kaifi & I, a book on her beautiful journey with late poet husband Kaifi Azmi. Originally written in Urdu, it was titled Yaad Ki Rahguzar, it has been translated into English by Veer Zaara screenplay writer Nasreen Rehman. The event was attended by Shaukat's children Shabana Azmi and her brother Baba Azmi, with his wife Tanvi Azmi. Javed Akhtar, Farhan and Zoya were also present. He was always different, a fact that didn't sit too easily on my young shoulders. He didn't go to 'office' or wear the normal trousers and shirt like other 'respectable' fathers but chose to wear a white cotton kurta-pyjama 24 hrs of the day.
