Dostana is a word in Hindi / Urdu meaning "Friendship". It is also the title of two Bollywood movies.
Dostana (1980 film)
Dostana is a 1980 Bollywood action drama film, produced by Yash Johar and directed by Raj Khosla. The film stars Amitabh Bachchan, Shatrughan Sinha, Zeenat Aman, Prem Chopra, Amrish Puri, Helen, Pran and Paintal. The film was the Third highest grossing hit of 1980 after Qurbaani & another of Amitabh Bachchan's film released that year namely Shaan.Dostana was one of the last successful movies directed by Raj Khosla. The film was remade in Tamil as Sattam with Kamal Haasan.
Plot
Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan) and Ravi (Shatrughan Sinha) are best friends who do not question each other about their careers. Vijay is a police officer and Ravi is a lawyer. While Vijay catches criminals, Ravi bails those criminals out and is employed by Daaga (Prem Chopra). One day both Vijay and Ravi meet Sheetal (Zeenat Aman) at different places and times, and both fall in love with her. While Vijay's love is more vocal and is reciprocated by Sheetal, Ravi has one-sided crush on Sheetal.
Ravi admits his love for Sheetal to Vijay who is devastated but decides to sacrifice his love for Ravi's sake. However, there is a misunderstanding when Daaga decides to stir up Vijay and Ravi's friendship by showing Ravi a photo of Vijay and Sheetal. Vijay and Ravi become rivals for the first time. The rest of the movie looks at the conflict between Vijay and Daaga. After the misunderstanding, Ravi is on Daaga's side but later learns the truth and atones for the his deeds.
Dostana (2008 film)
Dostana (Hindi: दोस्ताना, translation: Camaraderie, Friendship, or even Bromance) is a 2008 Indian romantic comedy film directed by Tarun Mansukhani and starring Abhishek Bachchan, John Abraham and Priyanka Chopra in the lead roles. Dostana was filmed entirely in Miami, Florida. It is loosely inspired by the Hollywood movie, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry. Filming began in March 2008, and the film was released on 14 November 2008. It went on to become the eighth highest grossing film at the Indian box office in 2008.
Plot
Sameer 'Sam' Kapoor (Abhishek Bachchan) and Kunal Chopra (John Abraham) are fun-loving, womanizer bachelors settled in Miami. Sam is a nurse by profession and is often joked around by others about the cliché 'skirt wearing' joke. Kunal is a photographer and is in look out for apartment after his partner asks him to move out within 2 weeks. They both briefly meet each other at a friend's place after a night out with girls. Later, they run into each other while looking for an apartment to rent and they both love it. The apartment belongs to Neha Melwani (Priyanka Chopra) who works for Verve magazine. She lives there with her Maasi (meaning Aunty in hindi) (Sushmita Mukherjee). However, her Maasi refuses to sublet the apartment to either of them as Neha wanted only girls as her flat-mates.
