20 Fenchurch Street is a commercial skyscraper in London that takes its name from its address on Fenchurch Street, in the historic City of London financial district. It has been nicknamed 'The Walkie-Talkie' because of its distinctive shape. Construction was completed in spring 2014, and the top-floor 'sky garden' was opened in January 2015. The 34-storey building is 160 m (525 ft) tall, making it the fifth-tallest building in the City of London and the 13th tallest in London.
Designed by architect Rafael Viñoly and costing over £200 million, 20 Fenchurch Street features a highly distinctive top-heavy form which appears to burst upward and outward. A large viewing deck, bar and restaurants are included on the top three floors; these are, with restrictions, open to the public.
The tower was originally proposed at nearly 200 m (656 ft) tall but its design was scaled down after concerns about its visual impact on the nearby St Paul's Cathedral and Tower of London. It was subsequently approved in 2006 with the revised height. Even after the height reduction there were continued concerns from heritage groups about its impact on the surrounding area. The project was consequently the subject of a public inquiry; in 2007 this ruled in the developers' favour and the building was granted full planning permission. In 2015 it was awarded the Carbuncle Cup for the worst new building in the UK in the previous 12 months.

This triple-glazed, panelised aluminium clad structure will take its place among the City's growing family of iconic architectural statements. And CH2M HILL - as structural engineers - has been tasked with ensuring the whole structural steel skeleton is designed and erected with the precision befitting such an important building. Aside from the 177m building's peculiar shape - it bows outwards at its upper echelons - the structure will boast London's highest public park. The Sky Garden, as it has been dubbed, will allow Londoners to enjoy panoramic views of the capital.
From the car (black Jaguar) and bicycles to the carpet and tiles that this building has burned, fried eggs can now be added to the ever growing list. Today was slightly cooler and more cloudy than it was when those incidents took place, however the building's reflection was hot enough to cook some eggs in the early afternoon (1pm) sunlight. The Walkie Talkie (20 Fenchurch Street) building is designed to taper outwards as it rises thus maximising revenue from rental due to the higher rates from the upper floors. The result of this design is a concave parabolic surface that focuses the sunlight to a small area where damages are reported on a daily basis. The area that's in the 'spotlight' is a small middle section of Eastcheap. Note that with the sun behind the affected properties, most of ...

The challenge was getting the plants up to the 37th Floor. Following some practice runs down at our nursery in Kent, we commenced the lift utilising the special Derrick crane before it was going to be decommissioned. Lifting the Cycad trees, some of which are a couple of hundred years old, was a very delicate operation and our trial events ensured the best approach to getting them to the 37th floor for storage before we planted them!

03 September 2013 Blinding rays of light from a skyscraper in the City of London are being blamed for melting parts of vehicles below it. City AM journalist Jim Waterson managed to fry an egg in the glare of the skyscraper where the temperature was measured at 92.6F (33.7C). Developers of 20 Fenchurch Street, better known as the "Walkie-Talkie" because of its distinctive shape, are investigating reports of the damaging glare, and a number of nearby car parking spaces have been suspended, say reports. Businessman Martin Lindsay said he was distraught when he returned to find his luxury Jaguar XJ saloon with warped panels along one side. The wing mirror and badge had also melted from the heat of the reflected sunlight, he claimed. "They're going to have to think of something. I'm gutte...

It was a gorgeous sunny day in London so I went to Sky Garden with my best friend Alex. Located at 20 Fenchurch Street in London's walkie talkie building, The Sky Garden is London's highest public garden and it's free to go up. You just have to book a 1.5 hour time slot on their website before you go. Afterwards we headed to the Tower of London and St Katharine Docks to enjoy London in the sunshine.
This is the fifth instalment in our series about daylight in London and this one could be our favourite so far. The Sky Garden sits at the top of one of London's recent skyscraper additions - 20 Fenchurch otherwise known as the Walkie-Talkie. Amazingly, access to this space is free, the architecture is cool, the view is stunning and its filled with lovely natural light and plants. Check out the official info below (once you've watched our visit of course) and make sure you book yourself a ticket to see it in real life.... https://skygarden.london http://vinoly.com/works/20-fenchurch-street/ Any beautiful, naturally lit buildings in London we have missed? London Listeni/ˈlʌndən/ is the capital and most populous city of England and the United Kingdom.[3][4] Standing on the River Thames, London has been a major settlement for two millennia, its history going back to its founding by the Romans, who named it Londinium.[5] London's ancient core, the City of London, largely retains its 1.12-square-mile (2.9 km2) medieval boundaries and in 2011 had a resident population of 7,375, making it the smallest city in England. Since at least the 19th century, the term London has also referred to the metropolis developed around this core.[6] The bulk of this conurbation forms Greater London,[7][8][note 1] a region of England governed by the Mayor of London and the London Assembly.[9][note 2] The conurbation also covers two English counties, the City of Lon...

See http://www.landscapearchitecture.org.uk/london-landscape-architecture/london-skylines-high-buildings-landscape-architecture-policy/ Please comment on the Draft Skyline Landscape Policy from the London Branch of the Landscape Institute, either below or here: http://www.gardenvisit.com/london_skyline_landscape The London skyline has evolved rapidly over the past 20 years, notably with The Heron Tower, The Shard, The Leadenhall Tower ('the Cheese-grater'), St Marys Axe (the Gherkin) and 20 Fenchurch Street (the 'Walkie Talkie Scorchie') dominating the capital's skyline. Sir Simon Jenkins has written about London becoming a 'Gulf on Thames'. Time - 15:30 to 18:25 A really hot long stay at Limehouse station on the LT&S; line which is one stop out of Fenchurch Street. I did arrive an hour earlier at around 2:30pm but it didn't count as peak time until 3:30pm. The visit was a bit boring at first as it was a constant flow of c2c Class 357 Electrostars and nothing else (used to be more variety before privatisation) but as the traffic increased as it got later, I was surprised by how Fenchurch Street which has 4 platforms, could cope with such heavy peak demand. Since I'm used to seeing 4-car 357s and rarely 8-car 357s whenever I visit the LT&S; line, I was amazed that 12-car 357s were used as well, I managed to see 5 sets of 12-car 357s when I visited Limehouse (they do not appear until a while into the video). I unfortunately got ...
