An evacuation order has been issued for low-lying areas of Condobolin in the central west of New South Wales, as flood peaks in the Lachlan River move downstream.

The river is expected to peak near 7.2 metres on Wednesday and with more rain forecast, the order for residents to evacuate was put out at 9:00am.

It comes as the flooded waters of the Lachlan River, which devastated the town of Forbes, continue to travel downstream.

The evacuation order applies to the following areas of Condobolin:
Lachlan Valley Way east of Condobolin
Officers Parade, North and West of Graf Street
Lachlan Street between William Street and Denison Street
The southern side of Bathurst Street between Denison Street and Gordon Street
Lachlan Valley Way and Kiacatoo Road to the west of Condobolin
Molong Street between Mooney Street and Goobang Bridge

Sam Cantwell from the State Emergency Service (SES) said volunteers had begun door knocking households in those areas.

"Potential rain over the next few days means that residents in the nominated areas should evacuate over the next 24 hours," she said.

"Condobolin unit will have people on the ground today doorknocking to make sure the message is out there.

"We'll also be contacting residents by phone."

Ms Cantwell said the state's SES would continue to monitor the flood waters and assessing the impact on residents there.

Motorist has lucky escape from felled tree branch

Philip Landvogt from the New South Wales Weather Bureau said other parts of the state were being buffeted by strong winds.

"We've currently got a severe weather warning for damaging winds for parts of the Mid north Coast, Illawarra, Central Tablelands and Northern Tablelands districts," he said.

"Gusts up to 90km/hr are possible."

Mr Landvogt said the conditions should ease later this afternoon as a low pressure system moves out to the Tasman Sea.

Meanwhile, Sydney has also been experiencing some strong winds today.

A motorist had a lucky escape after gusty conditions brought down a tree branch that crashed through the windscreen of his car on the Wakehurst Parkway at Narrabeen on Sydney's northern beaches.

He suffered only minor injuries from the shattered glass.
