AEMO has received a Ministerial direction issued under the Essential Services Act 1981 (SA) to suspend the National Electricity spot and ancillary services markets in the South Australia region. In accordance with National Electricity Rule 3.14.3(a)(2), the spot and ancillary services markets are suspended.

The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) advises that at 1618hrs Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST) on Wednesday, 28 September 2016, a severe storm damaged transmission and distribution electricity assets in South Australia, leading to a state-wide power outage. Initial investigations have identified the root cause of the event is likely to be the multiple loss of 275 kilovolt (kV) power lines during severe storm activity in the state.
