A message from Olympia, WA hardcore band G.L.O.S.S.
Girls Living Outside Society’s Shit, photo by Renate Winter.
Hey y’all,
G.L.O.S.S. has decided to break up and move on with our lives. We all remain close friends, but are at a point where we need to be honest about the toll this band is taking on the mental and physical health of some of us. We are not all high-functioning people, and operating at this level of visibility often feels like too much.
We want to measure success in terms of how we’ve been able to move people and be moved by people, how we’ve been able to grow as individuals. This band has become too large and unwieldy to feel sustainable or good anymore—the only thing growing at this point is the cult of personality surrounding us, which feels unhealthy. There is constant stress, and traveling all the time is damaging our home lives, keeping us from personal growth and active involvement in our communities. Being in the mainstream media, where total strangers have a say in something we’ve created for other queer people, is exhausting.
The punk we care about isn’t supposed to be about getting big or becoming famous, it’s supposed to be about challenging ourselves and each other to be better people. It feels hard to be honest and inward when we are constantly either put on a pedestal or torn down, worshipped or demonized. We want to be whole people, not one-dimensional cartoons.
We are so thankful for everyone who has supported us and taken the time to tell us what we mean to you. If this band was for you, you know who you are, and no one can take that away. We will be playing Not Dead Yet Fest in Toronto in October, and planning one final show in the northwest with details to come. All of the money we make on Bandcamp after our break-up will be donated to the Interfaith Works Emergency Overnight Shelter, a low-barrier homeless shelter in Olympia, WA. Our records will remain in print.
Thank you for understanding why we have decided to put this down. While we know it might be sad for a lot of you, please understand that it is sad for us, too, but also relieving and nurturing. Ending the band is the right thing to do if we want to have healthy personal lives. (On that tip, while we appreciate your support so much, please don’t email us asking us not to break up or asking us about merch.)
We are eternally grateful for the people we have met and the places we have been due to G.L.O.S.S. Making these connections has been deeply rewarding and meaningful. Thank you so much for everything over the past year and a half.
Sharing this experience with you all has truly meant the world to us.

Band name:
Ooh, I know this one!… Y2K
Date & location formed:
SICK, Another easy question! We’re gonna ace this test. December 2k15 at 1905 Adeline St., Oakland CA 94608
Reason for forming:
Damn, a paragraph answer. I hate these questions. y2k was formed because we felt unprepared for an ambiguous future.
What are your lyrics about?
The way institutions manipulate facts to drive people into a controlled panic, excuses we make to avoid personal accountability, trying to process trauma, a flower.
How would you describe your sound?
The sound of stuffing your cash into your mattress; when you close the door on your airlock and you realize you don’t get wi-fi reception; the sound of four individuals trying to thrive in the new world; unhinged hardcore.
What’s in the future for this band?
Before the ball drops, we have a PNW tour planned October 12-17. We’ll be distributing shirts to keep people warm and tapes to keep people informed.

Band name:
GELD
Date & location formed:
2015 – Melbourne, Australia.
Reason for forming: Cormac: Bored fuckless of the bands around us and wanted to do our own thing without preconceptions, see what happened through blending disparate influences. Our singer Al worked as a barman at my local and I noticed that he had a carousel of tasty punk t-shirts. Started chatting, discovered we’d similarly wide-ranging musical tastes. Myself, him, Rowley (drums) and Isaac (bass) were talking bollocks at the pub one night and they mentioned they’d been trying to get something together for a few years but couldn’t find the right guitarist. They’d all been in solid bands so I said I’d like to give it a shot and we took it from there. It’s fun doing a band where there’s no single personality demanding it be a certain way; we’re just letting it flow and it’s surprising how fully formed it feels.
What are your lyrics about? Al: The crushing banality of existence, temptations of the first world, absurdist dystopian takes on anxiety and alienation.
GELD (photo by Dave Forcier)
How would you describe your sound?
We’ve had a pretty hard time describing it satisfactorily. I liked Tim from Maggot Fest’s take: “Something like Cleveland’s H-100s would come up with if they’d moved to Tokyo in the mid 90s, gone on a three-day conbini sake binge and then jumped on stage at a Burning Spirits show.”
What’s in the future for this band?
Our mate Jon’s just after re-releasing our demo tape on his label Space Ritual. We’ve another batch of songs almost ready so we’ll be looking to record them over the next months, then see if anyone can be arsed releasing them or do it ourselves.
Date & location formed:
February 2016. We formed in a share house in St Kilda, Melbourne.
Amyl & The Sniffers (photo by Loredana Lo Porto)
Reason for forming:
We originally started to play house parties and drink beer for free, make energy/cause trouble. We all live together so we recorded our E.P one afternoon.
What are your lyrics about?
Power, alcohol, coastal towns, sad heart, road trips perspectives, Melbourne and St Kilda, pleasure and not being lonely.
How would you describe your sound?
Short sharp and mean. Sounds of 70’s Australian rock.
What’s in the future for this band?
Couldn’t tell you xx
Band name:
TARANTÜLA, not TARANTULA. It’s just that simple.
Date & location formed:
I dont know when we started, but thats of no consequence. all that matters is that we exist. We organized our troops in the putrid depths of Chicago subways and sewers. Mr.future, Drügface, Corporal Cunt, and Dr. DNA.
Reason for forming:
Because what the fuck else is there to do.
What are your lyrics about?
lyrical subjects are the collective consciousness of the lives, loves, and adventures of Tarantüla. And drug stuff.
How would you describe your sound?
Punk rock music.
Tarantüla (photo by Martin Sorrondeguy)
What’s in the future for this band?
Only Mr. Future can know these deeps secrets, and by no means are they fit to be strewn about the general public.
Reason for forming: Swervy: Dani n I just met n shared the love 4 Japanese punk n agreed That Texas punk scene needed a change of pace, sound n influence. Dani: I became friends with Swervy and we just nerded out real hard on Japan punk. Around this time I was messing around w a guitar that a friend let me borrow. Once Swervy came up with a name I talked to Barry (drummer) and he was down to record a demo. Next day, Me n Barry went to His practice space, split an aderall and I called in to work and under 2 hrs we recorded a very crude demo I barely knew how to play guitar but somehow we recorded 3 tracks and then called up Swervy who some how hadn’t gotten any sleep in 24hrs and he just freestyled over the demo w a phasor pedal over his vocals.
What are your lyrics about? Swervy: Not being ok in the head embracing being a weirdo hating the HPD n the shenanigans of being a party boy who loves beer.
How would you describe your sound? Swervy: Fucked up noisey adk influence chaos. Dani: Noisey punk from hell.
What’s in the future for this band? Swervy: Hopefully tour n flexi maybe 7in if someone would help us out it out but definitely more shit coming out. Dani: it would be badass if we could tour but everyone else is in other bands and really busy always but hopefully one day we can tour. Tryna put out a 2-3 track flexi in the near future!

Band name:
OUR ACTUAL NAME IS UNPRONOUNCABLE IN YOUR EARTHEN LANGUAGES (DUE TO YOUR LACK OF TONGUES); HOWEVER IT ROUGHLY TRANSLATES TO “THE PEANUTS.”
Date & location formed:
WE WERE FORMED IN DIMENSION C-37X ROUGHLY 17 FLIM FLAMS AGO. I BELIEVE THIS WORKS OUT TO BE ABOUT JANUARY OF 2016.
Reason for forming:
WE ORIGINALLY FORMED AS A ROYAL BATTALION TO FEND OUR HOMEWORLD FROM INVADING SPACEWORMS, BUT SOON FOUND THAT A SONIC OFFENSE WAS A MORE VIABLE OPTION.
What are your lyrics about?
LYRICS? DO YOU MEAN OUR VERBALISED ATOMIC RAYS? THOSE JUST KIND OF SOUND LIKE NASALLY FARTS.
How would you describe your sound?
THE CRIES OF 1000 SUNS LISTENING TO “TIME OUT FOR FUN” BY DEVO AT ONCE.
What’s in the future for this band?
OUR FUTURE IS ALREADY IN THE PAST, AS WELL AS THE PRESENT. TIME IS A HUMAN MADE CONSTRUCT WHICH WE FIND LAUGHABLE.
AND YOU MAY ALSO CONTACT OUR MAJOR EARTH REPRESENTATIVE, WALKER MACDONALD, AT
Band name:
ETC. or Etecétera (the name came from a Kurt Vonnegut reference that says that ETC. means “sameness without end” and that’s how our lifes feel.
Date & location formed:
We formed around March, this year. It all started at a small room at the top of Rodrigo’s house (Mexico City), with just a guitar, its amp and a small drum kit.
Reason for forming:
While I was doing some different things with Olvido, Rodrigo and I decided to make a band; something that we always dreamed since junior high. So, yeah… a lot of years went by and we made these five songs in about a week. It took time to record em, ’cause we didn’t (and still) had the money to properly record em, so I borrowed a Tascam DR-07 and started to record instrument by instrument with Rodrigo; It was so hard, I’ve never done something like that before. Then I mixed em with ProTools and tried to make em less shitty. Finally, we decided to record Operación Ser Humano by Los Baraja, cause we love that fucking song.
What are your lyrics about?
Our lyrics are about a couple of things; from “being a huge and untouchable douchebag in the punk scene,” to a history of injustice in the Mexican penitentiary system. But, those are just the first two songs, the rest of the songs are a lot about my anxiety and depression that’s fucking with me every single day.
How would you describe your sound?
I dunno. I would like to say punk for anxious and angry people. That’s why the quality of it sucks!
What’s in the future for this band?
Well, maybe make a real ‘band’ (not just the two of us), start playing shows, make some tapes, and that stuff. If all of that never happens, we’re still making some new songs that will come out later this year.

And if you wanna get personal:
Band name:
DAGGAS
Date & location formed:
Winter 2015, San Fernando / Santiago de Chile.
Reason for forming:
We decided to start a band that allow us to express the negative side of our view about the life.
What are your lyrics about?
An iron glove strangling your neck, sultry and sad.
How would you describe your sound?
Noise and sick punk.
What’s in the future for this band?
Preparing surprises for the future.
Reason for forming:
We just needed the money you know. I had gone into business with the wrong people to pay off my loans and bills and stuff because, come on, work sucks. Now these people needed their money back and I had just spent it all so I was in a bit of a predicament so to speak. I saw this add that a local pub needed a cover band and the money was pretty good so I called up some friends and we formed the band. We were rehearsing songs like brown eyed girl, hotel california and that kind of crap but when we were supposed to play our first gig we all got so high and drunk the songs sounded more like a drug induced psychosis than anything else. Anyhow people kinda seemed to like it so we stuck to that concept and now we’re big shots. Real high rollers baby.
What are your lyrics about?
Its mostly mumbo jumbo and total nonsense but once in a while we sing about more serious subjects like pizza flavored kisses and being a real high roller.
How would you describe your sound?
A cover band trying to play ”Boys are back in town” during a drug induced psychosis.
What’s in the future for this band?
Were playing a show in London on the 1st of October at the SLIME BALL at old blue last with fellow labelmates. Also our debut full length album ”GLADE” will be released on PNKSLM recordings next spring.
Date & location formed:
2015 around Ungdomshuset Copenhagen k-town.
Reason for forming:
We had a ton of idea’s and riff that wouldnt match our other bands
we got together in a reheardsal space and suddenly we had alot of songs.
What are your lyrics about?
Everyday life, and our perspective of this crappy world.
How would you describe your sound?
We have all being listen to alot of dangerhouse stuff and want to do our own version
we through it should turn out a more surfed than it did but i guess we just went to a darker direction.
What’s in the future for this band?
Record a 7″ during September, and get touring.
Reason for forming:
To bring the thunder of hard rock to the lightning of hard core. No but seriously, Leo (drums) and Jerka (guitar) had written a batch of songs for their old band that weren’t going to be used and they figured they’d start a new band in the style of those new songs. So they invited me (Oskar (vocals)) and Adam (bass) knowing that we shared their love for hardcore and rock n roll and after that things came pretty natural.
What are your lyrics about?
Mostly going to shows, partying, fucking and dealing with anxiety. And the pains and pleasures of living in Stockholm.
How would you describe your sound?
Hardcore punk with a healthy dose of rock n roll.
What’s in the future for this band?
Adam just recently became a father so things have been moving kind of slow the last couple of months, but we’ll soon be recording a new 7’’ and then hopefully we’ll start writing more new songs and do some touring as well.
Date & location formed:
Winter 2015 in New Jersey.
Reason for forming:
The lead singer, Dash Maybe, forced the rest of the group to come together and play a one-off gig, but then it ended up being a lot of fun and now it can’t be stopped.
What are your lyrics about?
Dogs, muscles, female empowerment, slime, paranoia, Edgar Allan Poe.
How would you describe your sound?
Heavy Party Punk. Our riffs are intended for head bangin’ and booty shakin’…
What’s in the future for this band?
More shows and an LP, what else do u need?
